Essay

Anthropologists have become so used to seeing different cultures, some extreme that there no that so strange as to surprise them. Perceptions about one’s body have a wide influence on many of Nacirema society and institutions. The problem represented is the issue of culture and from a sociological point of view; culture is based on certain rituals. Every culture provides an acceptable behavior and defines this reality. Authority in such society is chosen by rituals. Like the Nacirema people, the rituals help the members of the society to acknowledge the ritual as the authority and to discover the knowledge about the society. Those who know the truth as defined by their culture follow it consciously. They accept those who carry out the rituals as being on higher hierarchy of power as seen in Nacirema society where magical practitioners and medicine men are placed in a prestigious class (Miner, 1956).

The culture of the society defines the moral yardstick that services as the personal comparison standard. The relationship created while performing the rituals is a reflection of how people are supposed to associate with others or behave around them. Regardless of how uncomfortable the rituals may seem to outsiders, the insiders appreciate and embrace them freely. The daily ceremonies practiced by Nacirema society involve torture and discomfort (Miner, 1956). However, people endure them since they have embraced the results. Any form of deviance among the people would seem as breaking the committal relationship with fellow societal members.

The main point is that every society has practices that hold it together just as the Nacirema people are bound by their rituals. They are part that makes up society and build cohesion within it.

Movie review

Jane Eyre is a movie that was established in the year 1996. Jane Eyre is an orphan who is left to live under the mercies of her relative who happens to be her aunt, Mrs. Reed. She goes through a tough time as she is mistreated and segregated while in her aunt’s home.  She is thus sent to be brought up in one of the harsh charity girls’ boarding school (Brontë 2002). While in the school, she grows both physically as well as mentally, and at the age of eighteen, she becomes a teacher. Later, she advertises for a position of becoming a governess and she was called upon to go to Thorn field. It is while she was in this place that she fell in love with Mr. Rochester and he also fell in love with her. He, however, yields an awful and bad secret that threatens to separate them for good (Brontë 2002).

In the movie, as Jane was a kid, she always wanted to play outside, have fun and also play the piano but just before she could play, her teacher always wanted her to do some basic  mathematics. Jane, therefore, struggled and as a form of motivating her, the teacher would give her piano lessons if she got the arithmetic correct (Brontë 2002). The aspect of her using mathematics is also seen in the way she calculates all that is happening around her and she tries to balance her life. This movie is relevant even today as it is used by many people who try to represent Jane’s personality and her devotion in encountering all the challenges that she faces in life trying to balance each one of them.

Rhetoric analysis

There are different perspectives on what rhetoric is. Rhetoric is an essential element in the human interaction. While on the other side rhetoric analysis is an important tool that is used in the day to day survival. Thus it is clear that these elements cannot be ignored at all as they are crucial and are found everywhere. Rhetoric basically refers to the study and activities that are carried out for persuasion. The humans are able to form large and complex societies and this makes them unique among the animals. In an environment, the humans always find a way to interact with others without causing violation and physical damage and it is through this act that persuasion is reached. Rhetorical analysis is intertwined with the element of rhetoric as it focuses on studying persuasion and the manner in which persuasion is carried out (Longaker & Walker 2011). This is thus used in the human environment as it helps in judging and advocating for the effectiveness of persuasion. This, therefore, enables the humans to more understand, just, well behaved and effective speakers. This paper, therefore, will focus on presenting and discussing the importance of rhetoric and rhetoric analysis to the environment and how they relate to environmental sustainability.

Environmental sustainability, in this case, aims at promoting sustainable interaction system within the human environment. This ensures that the system supports the good of the people and is essential for the human survival and it balances on the society’s need and in the maintenance of the social condition. Sustainability, in this case, will involve the study of the manner in which the interaction system function, remain diverse and offer everything it needs for the society to remain in balance. It is through this that the people live in harmony with each other in the environment and with those that surround them thus protecting them from violation and physical damage.

With the increase in the rate of environmental issues that affects the people, it is essential to find a strategy that can be implemented so as to bring about environmental sustainability. Rhetoric, in this case, is essential as it will allow most of the people to persuade one another through their interaction and thus allowing them to come to a consensus. With persuasion towards leading lives that are of high social quality, the people will be able to influence each other in a peaceful way thus enabling them to accomplish environmental sustainability (Longaker & Walker 2011). On the other hand, understanding of the rhetoric allows the people to analyze better ways in which the people can be persuaded. This will enhance the people to judge and advocate well on what is good for the environment and thus any persuasion was done will be for the better of the environment and ultimately its sustainability.

Rhetoric and rhetoric analysis relates as they all share one perspective of persuasion. The actions and beliefs of people are uncertain and thus persuasion is essential as it helps in the reduction of these uncertainties. Once people appreciate the art, rationale and the advantage of a contrary argument, they are able to understand that persuasion contributes towards the many convictions that different people have (Longaker & Walker 2011). People should, therefore, focus on influencing other people towards upholding the standards, morals, values and principles of the environmental management that results to the environmental sustainability.

Reading Note Public Speaking

Chapter one analyzes the ethics of public speaking. The idea of what is meant by a good citizen stands out as they are given the rights to make a personal statement and about opinions freely. Public speaking in this arena means getting involved with the local communities and perhaps joins forces in communal work where they can share ideas with one another and resolve on important issues and controversies (Hogan et al, 2013). The idea of a good citizen advocates for communication with one another. This enhances the ability to communicate effectively resulting to important skills to the ordinary citizens.

The idea of chapter two in public speaking is ideological due to the strategic way of listening and speaking in any given democratic society. It stands out due to effective listening and speaking ways that ensure that one listens attentively, critically and in a respectful manner (Hogan et al, 2013).  The transactional communication has paved a way for message sharing and understanding between more individuals. In order to be a good speaker, one has to be a good listener as a way of facilitating the flow of information without distort or interruptions.

Chapter three addresses the issue of speaking with confidence in order to facilitate a great success in public speaking. The most ideological tip is speaking with a powerful tone that will help one project a strong powerful confidence in any given situation (Hogan et al, 2013). A lot has to be put together by an individual engaging in public speaking so as they can achieve. Eliminating of filler words is one of them as well as being slow in talking which does not mean to be necessarily quite but to be strong in the choice of words (Hogan et al, 2013).

For one reason being a good citizen is meaningful. This means that one is patriotic and looks for the interest of the country. In my previous class, I have been involved with my classmates as we have performed communal work by raising some funds and cleaning up the community park (Hogan et al, 2013). It is appealing as it makes individuals interact more in diverse fields enhancing good public speaking skills. Listening and speaking fall hand in hand. There are barriers to good speaking as well as good speaking which came be easily be overturned if one practices them. My lecturer asked us to carry out a research to the community and identify what they would want the school to do for them. I had a moving speech based on the findings of the research as I was able to listen to all members of the community regardless of the age and other social factors. Speaking with confidence is a major challenge to many but I was able to overcome it by my strong choice of words delivering my speech. This is because I was able to understand the communication apprehension as well as managing the factors that contribute to anxiety (Hogan et al, 2013).

After acquainting myself with the knowledge of public speaking I can say that it entails more than just speaking to the public. One has to be a good listener and also have a good, sensible choice of words in a structured deliberate manner that will inform the people, influence and even entertain them in order to persuade the audience (Hogan et al, 2013).

In relation to the reading of the chapters I quenched myself about who are my audience, why does the audience behave the way they do and what should I do in order to be more effective. These questions reminded me of why most of us are not so good in public speaking because of most of the times we fail to identify ourselves with the audience in the right manner (Hogan et al, 2013).

Acting Response

One of the most common definitions of acting is, it is the art of performing in a play. First of all the audience identifies with the actors by various factors such as clothing, the paintings on them and by the most artful paragraphs of their scripts. Actors are distinguished as they can influence the audience making them walk away feeling of possible and also exciting their imagination. In my own personal views, an actor is a catalyst of a play as he can be able to ignite a spark to every audience as it can be able to achieve multiple goals at the same time (274).

Survival versus Nature

To Build a Fire by Jack London

            Report

I have chosen the short story ‘’To Build a Fire’’ by Jack London.  The short story is found on page 125 of the book.  The story interests me because it generally teaches individuals to view beyond the things that are placed in their sight.  The short story is comparable to existence as if an individual is not keen to examine situations before getting involve people will simply take advantage of the naivety of their personalized benefits.  In comparison with the story by Jack London, the man failed to evaluate the situation that he was involved in. in this circumstance, nature took it course by taking advantage of his ignorance.

In the story, London states that the death of this man is essential as it is a symbol of a weak man who had no companion to assist him during his deep scuffle with nature.  The story places thoughts in individuals head that even the challenges that are posed by nature can be a challenge and overcome with the assistance of a being, critical thinking as well as developed reasoning.  It is thus clear that London wished to communicate that slowly understanding rationales to be short sighted (Gale, 5).  They are therefore permitting their prehistoric instincts to win because of the incapability to provide solutions.   The author does not, therefore, wish for individuals to forget totally about their intuitions that are primal but he wants them to consider situations and developed reasoning so that they can be able to effectively overcome obstacles subjected in life.  He, therefore, believes that individuals continuously opt for the easy actions they are therefore bound to die without help like the man portrayed in the story.

In my opinion, readers might be interested in the short story because of its classical style. This style, therefore, generates a non-forgettable and a stimulating tale which is tragic in its own nature. The story may additionally interest readers because it is a demonstration of the modern philosophical concepts (Gale, 5). This is because the theme of the story talks of a man who is in the necessity of searching for the connotation of his misery which is subjected in his solitary living in a surrounding which is indifferent and hostile to his suffering. The theme is thus emphasized by the author in three distinct ways which are imagery, an irony location that is artful as well as the setting selection which is suitable in illustration of critique thinking in complex scenarios.  Moreover, the readers may be interested in the story because at some point everyone tries to get involved in things that might seem impossible and thus the story shows how such situation can be challenged.

The story is essential as it can be well used in my essay to illustrate the work of art in demonstrating situations.  The theme of nature versus survival that is held by the story can be accepted and comprehended by any individual.  The story to build a fire expresses different literature elements which help in getting the reader involved.  The author is precise when setting the initial first of the story as he describes the story setting completely thus helping the readers in getting the sensation of the struggles that the man is going through (Gale, 6).  This is, therefore, essential in developing an essay based on the great understanding that the story provides.  The setting and the plotting of the story is additionally well demonstrated through the utilization of literacy techniques of narration as well as foreshadow.

            Survival versus Nature

            Essay

The short story To Build a Fire by Jack London holds the major principal concept of giving admiration to nature through having an authoritative understanding of the signs to warn that it provides.   The story utilizes a setting that plays a major role in understanding development.  London utilizes particular techniques in establishing the surrounding as well as the tone of the story.  Through introducing the general readers to the story, the author prepares them for a tone that provokes fear as well as depression. Through the isolation by the destiny and the frigid weather the author illustrates how the man is uninformed of his environment.  Therefore for the only world that the man is aware is the environment that he has developed solemnly.  Most individuals have not been exposed to such a situation, the author accounts that the surrounding is the major determinants of survival.  This is illustrated through everything that the man and his companion came across which was an illustration of danger throughout the story.

The story utilizes the third viewpoint instead of the first persona as the narrator fails to utilize first persona pronouns. First, personal view is only used when the narrator choose to take control of the story (Kennedy, and Dana, 28).  The viewpoint of the story is thus not limited but it is omniscient in nature for different reasons.  One the narrators are portrayed to be known n everything in the story because he does not understand only the things that are taking place but also the thinking of the characters.  This can be illustrated by the phrase, ‘’the dog understood clearly that the time was not right for traveling’’ (London, 129).  The narrator’s omniscience can also be demonstrated through how he developed judgment about the man making individuals believe that he knows the man completely. The narrator can thus be termed as heterodiegetic as he was not involved in the story at any moment yet he understands everything.

The setting of the story is placed In Yukon which is some place in Alaska.  This setting is really crucial in the whole story as it helps in delivering the theme clearly (Kennedy, and Dana, 81).  When the narrator states that the man’s fingers were numb the readers can sense the coldness of Yukon as they are able to imagine how it feels. The setting, therefore, plays a crucial role because it does not only ensure that the readers become emotionally engaged in the general story but additionally, makes them be engaged physically through feeling what the man feels.  The story, therefore, develops a relevance that is between the title and the setting of the story.  This implies that if the setting was developed in a place characterized by warmth it would not, therefore, relate to the story’s title because the fire would hold no importance (Kennedy, and Dana, 84).

The timing of the story was during the Gold Rush of Klondike where a large number of individuals were committed to searching for fortunes (London, 131). The social setting does not represent the strength of any social value. This is because the behaviors of those individuals involved in the story are completely opposite of the behaviors depicted by individuals in the world.  This, therefore, makes the social setting of this short story to be of no relation to any specific social setting.

In regard to style and tone of the story, the narrator’s tone in the story can be termed as unemotional and frank. This is because the narrator tells everything as it is without the engagement of any emotions.  At several times the narrator is seen to be subjective to an extent.  The story narrator makes judgments of the main character based on what the narrator thinks. The style of writing that is utilized by Jack London can thus be termed as straightforward and uninterrupted. This is because unlike other writers who ensure that their writing is complicated in order for the readers to utilize their critical thinking capabilities, London talks about everything (Kennedy, and Dana, 84).  However, despite the writing of the story being straightforward the construction of words and the development of sentences help individuals in imagining circumstances in the whole story in a very vivid manner.  Accordingly, the readers are thus able to get the sensation of being involved in the story by positioning themselves in the Yukon’s man location.

In the short story, fire is utilized in the representation of life (London, 139).  The story ensures that the readers understand the significance of fire in the life.  The man in the story tries very hand to ensure that he light a fire simply because he understands that the existence of fire would ensure that he survives the cold weather.  The importance of fire cannot, therefore, be ignored because its absence would result in misfortunes. On the other hand, the man’ hands are used to depict power.  The man had no ability to kill his dog simply because his both hands were numb (London, 126).  This, therefore, means that an individual holds zero power can never defend them without the ability to control thing with the hands.

The short story’s theme is centered on persistence (Kennedy, and Dana, 86).  The story, therefore, makes suggestions that persistence is needed in order to achieve objectives.  The man is consistent and persistent to reach the mining camp but because he failed to understand his surrounding he is involved in great danger.  In addition, the man is depicted as stubborn as well as too confident that he even ignored the advice that was given by the old-timers.  This, therefore, shows that no matter the strategies that one utilizes in order to get something if the objectives are not sensible and realistic they are bound to fail.  This means that one is required to understand his surroundings.

The kind of arrangement of the story is described as foreshadow (Gale, 7).  The short story utilizes foreshadow because there are several hints of the things that are expected to happen in the whole story.  The major hint is represented when the narrator tells the readers that the dog held the instincts that the time was not appropriate to travel as Yukon was covered by coldness (Gale, 8).  The second hint can be derived from the advice that was given by the old timer that individuals should not travel to Yukon under any situation without a partner as the weather was not pleasing.   In the story’s middle the story’s readers are made certain about the reality of the hints that were given earlier as the experiences of the man turned to be negative.  The foreshadowing style that is used by the narrator is perfect as it helps in building the climax for the story. The story’s title is to build a fire. The title is thus depicted in an infinitive mode instead of a gerund style.  This suggests that the story mainly bases it focus on the effort of building the fire in order to survive the cold rather than the efficiency of building the fire.  This additionally implies that the procedure of building fire goes uncompleted (Gale, 9).

In summary, to build a fire can be described as an interesting and thought provoking a story.   The story has a well-built plot which helps in deepening the ethical concept of the story.  This type of story can really be established in the world today.  The foreshadowing style that is used in the story is perfect as it is essential in the development of climax. The story, therefore, teaches it, readers, that one is not only required to be persistent but they are additionally required to understand their environment.  Understanding one’s environment as well as persistence holds complement each other because they are both authoritative in determining survival.  This therefore clearly shows that London Jackson was effective in incorporating elements of literature in his writing.  This is essential in ensuring that literature’s paradise is effectively enjoyed by the readers.  London ensures that understanding is enhanced through the placing of irony, imagery as well as the plotting of the story.  Through this features, one can fully understand the concept that the author was trying to convey to the audiences.

Lord of the Flies

Golding has enlarged the view of the perception of  human nature which is based on the fact that each person in the society is inclined towards doing evil acts more than good hence strongly implying that criminals and wrong doers will never seize. Through a personal experience, Golding has illustrated the nature of human character which he observed and analyzed during the World War II. He observed the cruel treatment of the prisoners, the bombing of the civilians and all sought of evils that were conducted by the Nazi concentrated camps and all these occurrences affected his view of humanity as explained in the book “How to Read Literature Like a Professor” by Thomas Foster. Foster decides to discuss in details about the significance of a quest in determining the number of aspects that concern the perception of people on their view of human nature. As described by Foster, a quest is perceived to be a knight or rather a dangerous path that is made up of various structural terms. A quest for human nature by Foster is practically seen in the novel Lord of the Flies by Golding as it shall be discussed throughout this paper.

First, the first chapter of the book has expounded on the need and purpose of a quest. Foster refers to a quest as a process of seeking discovery that requires one to move to a place with a specific reason for research. The quest aims at understanding the self-traits with respect to those of others which can be learned through ordinary trips, adventures, and outings (Schall 137). On a practical basis, Golding was learning the nature of the human character while at war, in various places which were away from home. The move he made from home to the military camping site would explain nature of a journey that Foster is talking about in his book that advocates for the best quest to be carried out (Bloom 156).

The second chapter of the book addresses the literal significance of eating meals together as an act of communion. Foster points that communion according to literature is inclusive of the Christianity acts, friendships intimacy and the act of sharing. Taking meals together is considered as a contributing factor in promoting peace and good will, connections between members of the society are able to maintain their intimacy towards one another (Schall 138). The concept of communion has been the crucial part of Golding’s experience throughout the war period in a variety of ways. The act of sharing meals is a countermeasure that is taken to by societies to enact against the evil that has taken control of the human character. From the broader perspective of the evil-minded nature, Golding was interested in discussing about evil, its causes and the effects it has on the community. The novel bases its key concerns on the role of individuals in the society when problems arise. For instance, the young boys that were set on an island were faced with numerous challenges on the island and this demanded oneness but unfortunately, they lacked it. The communion between these boys grew weaker due to the fact that all were having different interests and motives. The end results confirmed that the boys chose to fulfill their individual desires instead of co-operating their minds to build a coherent and profound society that would require the good of each person. In this regard, it is evident that human nature is perceived to be overwhelmed by selfishness as seen from the boys (Bloom 155).  This weakness could be best done away with as explained by Foster by establishing communal activities such as eating together in order to build unity.

Chapter three covers the literary significance that can be drawn from the use of fanatics and other spiritual figures. According to fosters, authors usually deploy figures such as vampires and ghosts with a sole purpose of presenting the dark side of the human nature. The fanatics are commonly used to represent selfishness, exploitation and dominion among other symbolic dark principles that are contained in the human character. In addition, the example that Foster presents of the Dracula, the theme of seduction, lust and danger have been covered among other evils. These evil traits have been the cause of rotten human characters that sum up to constitute the evil society at large. This is a theoretical concept of the human nature which is vividly described by Golding as the two boys Ralph and Piggy who are responsible for bringing all those who survived together. Jack the other boy forms a rebellious group which disorients all the plans that have been put in place by the fellow boys. From the way these boys are unable to remain united and decide on a common goal, Golding has derived his message which holds that human nature comes from within and the end results is a degenerated society into a barbaric anarchy. The boys are in not able to unite their efforts to eradicate themselves from the hands of the harsh natural conditions that presented in the island. Finally, the gradual decline of the moral standards of the individual values results to the declined structured society (Bloom 160).

The twelfth chapter of the Fosters writings has captured the use of symbols in professional writings. It talks about the straightforward symbols and those that have got a deeper meaning. For instance, raising a white flag communicates that he should not shoot or generally peace (Schall 138). In practical explanation, Golding has presented a horrible experience while at war. When he is confronted with a choice concerning the savagery of animals, he considers the act of turning back the various values that were represented by Ralph (Bloom 154). Golding uses the symbolism of the beast which the boys thought it could be killed or hurt. The beast is revealed when Roger kills Piggy deliberately. The writer of the novel has also symbolized authority and order by the use of conch which is destroyed during the death of Piggy. This basically symbolized the complete rejection of the moral standards that was followed by the boys implying that the fear of superstition concerning the beast was within them.

In conclusion, Golding has presented a practical explanation of the perception of human nature which is broadly covered in the book by Foster. Literature has embraced the use of symbolism, and fanatics to describe the nature of human character. Through the experience of the World War II that is presented by Golding, a deeper discussion has been derived to portray the perception of people about the character traits of the human nature.

“Ethos, Logos, and Pathos in Writing”

Writing is one of the hardest tasks that many college students especially the freshmen face. Having been in the same track of learning, I have encountered difficulties in the various aspects of writing which include coming up with a topic and writing about it comprehensively. Colleges have very high expectations that the students are expected to meet in their writing assignments. Catherine Savini in her article “Looking for Trouble: Finding Your Way into a Writing Assignment” explores the steps followed in coming up with a good piece of work. Susan McLeod in her article “Some Thoughts about Feelings: The Affective Domain and the Writing Process” illustrates that writing involves emotions. On the other hand, Sondra Perl in the article “Understanding Composing” explores the steps involved in writing.  These three articles contain very important information that many college students can make use in coming up with a more compelling piece of work. It is therefore clear that writing involves ethos, pathos, and logos and therefore to become a writer one should take all these aspects into consideration.

Writing is a difficult, emotional and a cognitive activity. Writing involves both feeling and thinking. It is common for students while writing to experience some kind of emotion or tension especially when they have to write about something that they feel is complicated to them. I have come to realize that I am comfortable while writing about the topics that enjoy most especially when I am relaxing. However, I may get tensed when I am writing topics that are not familiar hence attracting chances of writing poor quality work. The key thing that I have come to realize is to try and contain emotions or make them work in my favor instead of working against me. As Susan McLeod points out, “We can work out specific coping strategies to help students control their affective reactions-monitoring their emotional state, allocating their energy, stopping themselves when they are over-excited-so that their emotions work for them rather than against them” (McLeod 433). Therefore, emotions will always be there and students have to learn how to control these emotions so as to maintain a successful writing career.

One of the things students find to be difficult is coming up with a good topic or a good thesis. It is likely that students may get stuck for a day or more while trying to figure out the best topic that is suitable for their piece of work.  This is something that I have also experienced myself. There are instances where I spend days trying to come up with a topic. When I finally come up with one topic and start writing about it, I come to notice that I don’t have enough content or material on it.  In such situations, I am forced to start the whole process again and look for a new topic from scratch. To come up with a good topic on which to base an argument, one has to consider a problem that needs to be solved. This claim is valid due to the fact that “problems motivate good papers, and good problems will lead you to your thesis argument” (Savini 55). It is possible to cultivate and take advantage of a problem to modify thinking so as to come up with a better paper. In my opinion, I believe that trying to look for answers to a given problem is a good place to start an argument and write a compelling paper.

What many students don’t recognize is that writing is not just a continuous process. Writing is recursive. It is common to keep on going back to what you had written before so as to get a better idea of what to write next. Sometimes one has to change some parts that had been written before so as to suit the shift in the thinking.  This is a technique that is widely used even by the most experienced writers and therefore, college students should not shy away from using this technique.  As Perl points out, such recursive movements “show us the fallacy of reducing the composing process to a simple linear scheme and they leave us with the potential for creating even more powerful ways of understanding composing.” This is true because as we write, some new ideas always come to our minds. These ideas may be better than the original ideas that we had before and therefore, changing some aspects of the work that you had previously written to incorporate the new ideas makes the whole paper better than it could have been with the original idea.

Learning how ethos, pathos, and logos affects writing is an important step in coming up with a good piece of work. It is important to recognize that writing is not a passive exercise and involves emotions and how well to use emotions to work for you and not against you. It is also good to recognize the best way to which one can be able to come up with a good thesis topic. The best place to start is identifying the problem that needs to be solved. A formulation of questions that need to be answered is the next step of the problem solving process. Finally, it is important to go back and forth during any form of writing as this helps the writer to incorporate some new ideas into the papers that may be of great importance in making the whole paper better. These three aspects of writing are critical for all students as it will help them maintain a brilliant writing career throughout their undergraduate program and in the future.

The Problem We All Live With by Norman Rockwell

This is an iconic image that contains five characters. A girl heading to school is being escorted by for men two ahead and two behind her. This painting has been designed in a manner that crops out the heads of the four men at their shoulders. On the wall behind her, one can see a smashed and splattered tomato which has been thrown against the wall (Richard & Lomotey 434). The word “nigger” which is a racial slur has been written on the smashed wall. From the overview of the painting, it one can deduce some messages that are being portrayed in the image. The young girl is of about six years and also an African American who is facing a threat and violence. She is carrying stationery materials implying that she is heading to school (Richard & Lomotey 434).

Rockwell has composed the artwork using various elements that on could spot out. First, the young girl is the focus of the painting by the use of values. The painting has been composed and designed using the golden triangle technique which positions the young girl at the left of the golden section. The design also utilized very strong verticals and horizontals which shows simplicity. The element of values is seen in the young girl because she has the brightest and darkest values. Rockwell has also used shading to define mass of the painting which is done to come up with the nice texture (Richard & Lomotey 436). The vignette of the painting is simple but strong and sufficiently supports the message that is being portrayed. In the element of perception, Rockwell has painted the lines seen along the sidewalk which are seen moving to a common vanishing point. This has created the relationship between the figures illusion and space to be well defined.

Focusing on how Rockwell has cherished in his painting, individual elements can be as well be described. First, a good and effective illustration requires a clear silhouette. It is evident that the young girl was painted with the highest contrast. The white dress has served this purpose of a clear silhouette making all viewers to draw their eyes to her. The white dress was a good selection considering her dark skin. Rockwell has also used saturation to point out the areas of focus. For instance, the yellow armbands, the smashed area of the wall, the fallen tomato as well as the stationery have been saturated. The coloring of the painting therefore communicates the general idea that an African-American girl is going to school (Richard & Lomotey 435).

The other aspect of any good painting is composition. Rockwell has used very simple values, colors and composition to portray a message that is not sophisticated. The overall message shows an event of attack which is oriented by racism. Rockwell has focused on the real points through simple but strong compositions. This implies that the fact that the painting is simple and the message is also simple and clear doesn’t mean that the issue of racism is not worth consideration. The smashed wall communicates that someone had just thrown the potato at the instantly. From the opposite direction of the camera that took the photo, there must have been protestors who were trying to hurt the young girl. The escort of four men is seen to provide security to the girl (Richard & Lomotey 434).

Rockwell has also incorporated the aspect of symbolism in his painting. The ideas are however quite open starting from the title of the painting. The title suggests a problem that is facing the American-Africans at schools. He has also used the word “nigger” to show that the painting is all about race as well as relations (Johnston, 344). The three K’s that have also been penned down portray a symbolic message concerning racism and relations. The young girl has her face sad hence implying that the experience was not any jovial. The cropping out of the marshals head represents an institution. Visually, they have offered her protection by boxing her in a frame. Their skin has been exposed at the fingers and one can spot out that all are white men. This painting therefore shows that the young girl is being protected by white men who are conceptually not heroes. In depth, the painting communicates a message that the American should stop racial discrimination in public schools.

In conclusion, this painting has incredibly designed to illustrate a real event. The values and the entire composition have kept the young girl to be the point of focus. Color has played a major role in communicating the issue of racism because the girl is black while the men are white. The words KKK and nigger also communicate much about the issue of race and relations with the help of other elements. Finally, the simplicity of the painting has reflected the title of the painting that this is what we go through (Johnston, 344).

Lineups and Other Means of Pretrial Identification

According to Barbara Tversky and George Fisher’s talk, it is clear that the simple form of narrating any story is never carried out neutrally. Hence any story is a matter to reformatting for its listeners and thus a person is most likely to omit so many details while one puts emphasis on other details so as to create the desired interest. An eyewitness of a crime is also inclined towards recounting and remembering of implicating information, especially when speaking to a police official with the intention of solving a crime. Afterward, if the eyewitness still remembers the information that throws doubts on the answerability of the suspect of the crime, such doubts holds greater weight than the implicating details (Engelhardt 1999). Hence the mere culpability of being human leads to distortion of the mind and the memory and hence inaccurate testimony. Therefore, these factors may make a person be biased thus causing wrong judgment due to their inaccurate testimonies.

When the suspect is not in police custody, the Miranda warnings are not required since the person as anything that the person may say be used in the court against him/her in case he is later arrested. Thus, this may result in his/her arrest as it may be used as evidence in the court of law. Another situation is when a person is not under any interrogation and thus the Miranda warnings are not needed since the police officers can ask questions before issuing the Miranda warnings as one can convict him before even being issued with the warning which may cause his arrest, custody and later on interrogation.

Admission essay

For the 3 years that I have been employed as Systems Administrator in National Park Foundation located in Washington, I have found that we are living in a digital world which requires information technologies and technical discipline (Farmer, 39). After I competed my high school education, I enrolled  in  public administration  courses since I had the passion of being an administrator  as a career in my life.  Since I was young, studying public administration was my passion and the right choice for me. I enjoyed learning about issues on public policy, public management, labour market principles among other many areas I covered. I was provided with well-rounded education and I was well equipped with methodology principles   as well as efficient knowledge needed in this digital world. While I was working in National Park Foundation, I utilized my skills in operations and performance, customer satisfaction, maintenance of network appliances among other many roles (Farmer, 42).  While I was working, I noticed that ensuring better management and operational maintenance required basic qualification which I did not have since I had not pursued by masters level.  There were technical disciplines, strong organizational skills as well as performing requirements which were very important and should apply in the department I was working. However, I was facing some challenges here and there which allowed me to have a greater opportunity of understanding more about public administration to accomplish my career aspiration.  Despite the challenges, my professional work helped me to consolidate my experiences and strengthened my professional growth as a manager, administrator and as a leader.  Importantly, the 3 years experience stirred my pursuit of a Masters degree in Harvard University.  It is important to say that interacting with diverse people in the work place, solving management problems, organizing and managing the activities, dealing with difficult personalities, lack of appreciation and increased workloads were all challenges in my life but inspirational experiences(Farmer, 45).  Moreover, the challenges strengthened my values and coagulated my decisions to take a master’s degree in Harvard University.

The reason why I want to purse my education in Harvard university is because if offers effective high education.   Since I was young, I had my friends and teachers talking about the education offered in Harvard University and how the lectures are effective in promoting thoughts.  Harvard University is the best in offering quality learning and a strong collaboration (Flores, 22). Since I was very social with my teaching staff, I remember asking one of my staff the best university to purse my education and he told me that Harvard is the best as it offers quality education and lectures are excellent in teaching.  Harvard University is among the universities which have designed programs to help the broad-minded students in meeting their needs. I believe that I will achieve my goals in Harvard University as teachers have a unique way of teaching and they help students to meet goals of their education (Flores, 23). They have the necessary skills and self confidence and this helps them to have a wide knowledge of the subjects they offer.  They are very responsible and they use the possible strategic skills to ensure that each student understands the courses and solves problems which may impact their education in a negative way. Lectures in Harvard are also interested in social adjustment, teaching behavior skills and understanding the challenges which students meet in life (Flores, 24). This is the best place where I will get the relevant resources, projects as well as activities which will help me get maximum learning.

Research is the major contributing factor which has motivated me in pursuing Mater’s in public administration.  I hope I will gain practical experience and apply the skills and knowledge locally and in global level.  I believe that after completing my Master’s degree in Harvard University I will achieve my personal and professional goals.  In my work experience, I have learned that the challenges we meet gives us opportunity to strengthen our faith and more important to achieve our educational goal (Bowen, 15).  The challenges which I have met in learning and working will help me to succeed in life.  Since my experience in National Park Foundation intrigued my yearning to pursue Public administration,  I believe that  the path I will take in  obtaining my Master’s  will  be the path for achieving my  goals.  I want to gain more education and skills in this study and become more compassionate and a competent leader in public organizations (Bowen, 17).  I want to be in a governmental level where I can interact with profit and non-profit sectors and more important provide ethical solutions to social needs. After pursing a Master’s degree I want to do a research on how to make a collaborative environment.  In public administrative department, I want to ensure that students are able to conduct research, analyze and make   effective practices so that they can implement essential strategic for public service.  In my career path, I will utilize my managerial training to implement societal programs for the purpose of ensuring accurate monitoring and appraisal system.  My strength is good communication skills, open mindedness, teamwork, innovative thinking, problem solving and quick thinking. These strengths will help me to focus on one goal of succeeding in education (Bowen, 19).

Since I have an education background, work experience, willpower and capability of gaining more knowledge, I will be in a better position to pursue my Master’s degree in Harvard University.  I have also developed better reasoning skills, self-discipline and cooperative behaviors and now I am able to make important life decisions.  Since I will gain an international experience, I will help the local and abroad companies with effective skills which are required in problem solving and in becoming competent leaders (Bowen, 14). Through my academic   and professional interest I will gain strong ability in work performance and change the world through implementing society’s priorities.   Through identifying my strengths which I have gained through education and work experience, I will apply them in my Master’s education and I am sure they will play a great role in achieving my goals.  I will utilize my natural talents and   personal accomplishments in making a successive life (Bowen, 15).  I am prepared and ready to gain more education and I promise I will have personal accountability, show integrity and fairness in my education life.  I will show perseverance, accept failures and create plausible solutions.  I will also have a strong work ethic and be optimistic.  I will   negotiate the challenges, ignore defects and imperfections and focus on one zone to avoid distractions and more important I believe in myself. I request the Harvard University to accept my application and give me the opportunity to pursue my master’s degree.  I will be thrilled to associate with prestigious faculty and the student body as well (Bowen, 15).

Nicholas Shea’s ‘Swampman’ objection

The theory by Millikan holds that representations are normally physical details whose contents are compound relational properties of the same particulars and whose specifications can be done in the form of properties that are obtained from natural sciences. The theory relied on the function of trait in biological concept. The human and other animal behaviour is attributed to their actions which are based on internal representations. The intentionality nature and giving a materialist consciousness theory are the main problems in materialist view of mind philosophy. Thinking about the intentionality phenomenon raises questions about a representation being anything where a rational agent is not present. In addition, what consist of a belief cannot be simple characteristics of a certain mental state that are also synchronic relational. If relations and properties existing in natural science can be used to specify the compound relational property , the idea that the content of a representation can be specified using the representations , could be used to show how a space exist in natural world for the mystery of this intentionality. Showing that the representation’s ‘aboutness’ was only a compound relational element of a physical particular (Shea, 2016).

Millikan’s theory shows this aboutness as a relational property that is complex concerning the physical details. She managed to do this by relying on normative idea in biological view of function and 1970s’ work which proved the idea of biological function by acceptable realistically thereby it is easy to view a biological function as one of its normal physical properties. She also proved this by showing that biological functions could be arrayed in terms of those special systems that are representational to insist on such an account that is naturalistically acceptable (Shea, 2016). To clarify what is unique in representation, a new approach of turning to internationality in nature was suggested. Millikan internationality came from cases simpler than human recognition.  Her starting point was to consider the functions from an evolutionary point of view. While intending to explain species’ biological functions she considers evolutionary functions as a guide to current organisation. Millikan independently views normativity as part of content attribution and if it’s the only normative functions that are normative, most likely the functions can naturalise intentionality. Hence, swampan doesn’t have intentional states and with no history no norms can be related to the swamp state (Shea, 2016).
