Machiavelli

I agree with the claim that Machiavelli develops a consistent concept of virtù in ‘The Prince’. Virtu can be described as the ability of a leader to do whatever it takes for him or her to achieve success. Some leaders are described in chapter 5 successful princes who rose up on their own. Cyrus, Theseus and Romulus are described as independent leaders who despite facing many challenges rose up to be successful princes (Machiavelli et al, 114). Machiavelli rather says that fortune too played an important part in ensuring the leaders remained successful throughout their governance. For instance Romulus became the king of Rome since he was abandoned in Alba and remained there and eventually became king. The people of Persia did not love the leadership of Medes thus people preferred Cyrus as their new king. Athenians were dispersed thus Theseus had to use skills in ensuring the people got the right leadership. Therefore it is clear to say that virtu is utilized where opportunity arises and once the opportunity is not utilized virtu is therefore wasted. Thus virtu comes hand in hand with opportunity and one should therefore utilize it before it becomes wasted and end up being useless. It is clear that the leaders successful used virtu to ensure they became successful and acceptable to the people they ruled.

Machiavelli further shows that private citizens too became princes either through help from others, fortune and by luck (Strauss, 134). Such leaders get leadership easily but they are not able to maintain their positions for long. Cesare Borgia is an example of such a leader since he gained leadership because of his father’s influence since he was a powerful man in the society. Borgia successful gained foreign lands through use of force and ensured his military was loyal to him at all times and maintained good but cautious relationships with other states. He was a courageous leader and virtu enabled him to govern his people successful though it did not prevent him from his ill-fated end (Machiavelli et al, 114). His father suffered a sudden death while he suffered from a serious illness such that he could not lead his people again. Machiavelli shows that cruel leaders cannot remain successful forever. Borgia is an example of a cruel and deceitful leader who remained successful only for a short period of time. This shows that virtu does not prevent cruel and deceitful leaders from suffering just like they made people suffer.

Machiavelli showed in ‘Discourse on Livy’ that virtu is important since it guides people in either following the right or wrong decisions. He believed that Roman republicans were governed by good virtues unlike the Italians who were disunited and ruined (Machiavelli, 76). Virtu in this book is used to show that people can make good decisions regardless of the freedom given to them and that people who follow the law end up becoming successful. Religion as seen in this book was the law followed by the Romans unlike the Italians who did not follow any religion. Christianity guided the Roman people and thus they followed the Christian laws and became united unlike the Italians who did not follow laws and ended up getting ruined.

Cabeza was born in the south of Spain and is the described as the first European to discover Texas. He was a geographer, doctor, merchant and historian and became the first European to discover Texas and its culture. He stayed in Texas for seven years where he learnt a lot about Texas and its terrain. He became king of Spain in 1540 but was accused on wrong leadership where he was deported to North Africa but later called to Spain after it was discovered he was innocent (Covey et al, 141). Machiavelli could judge Cabeza’s actions to be praiseworthy since he did everything possible for him to govern his people just like the leaders Machiavelli outlines in his book. Cebaza was orphaned at an early age where he joined the Spanish army and thoroughly fought during 1512 in Italy during the battle of Ravenna. He became the first lieutenant since he was appointed in the civil war that happened in Spain. In 1527 he departed with five ships where he made a contract with the Roman Emperor Charles where he was allowed to colonize region between Florida and today’s Rio Soto La Marina in Mexico (Covey et al, 141). He later landed in 1528 in the coast of Florida where he made an unwise decision to drop with over to hundred men and many horses so that he could conquer the northern part of Florida. He misunderstood the geography thus ended up separating with the other troops and as a result they suffered from food shortages causing death to some of his men and ended up remaining about 250 men. The Spaniards became very desperate since they were at a destination they never targeted to be as they were mislead by their leader Cabeza and thus they wanted to find their way back to Spain. The ships they had travelled in were faulty thus they decided to make boats, which was their only source of hope.

Food shortage became a serious problem and they decided to feed on the horses they came with. Most of the men suffered illnesses and succumbed to the illnesses.  By 1529 most of the men had died and the only remaining were 13 Spaniards and one slave from Africa as well as Cabeza (Covey et al, 142). Cabeza finally remained with only two Spaniards since the rest were attacked and killed by the Indians. They too survived since they were captured as slaves. Cabeza became the new doctor where he exchanged his skills of treating the sick Indians and in return he was given food. Machiavelli in his judgment would praise the actions of Cabeza since he was brave and courageous regardless of the fact that he caused deaths of over 250 men whom he mislead and they ended up in the wrong place. Of the 300 men that started the journey only four men survived the ordeal because other men succumbed to starvation, illnesses while others were killed by the Indians. Cabeza became the first ethnologist where he did everything possible to ensure him and his remaining three men would land back in Spain peacefully (Covey et al, 142). Cabeza was not only a medical doctor but a surgeon as well since he was able to operate one Indian trader who had been struck almost near the heart by an arrow. In 1540 Cabeza became the governor of Spain after him and the survivors arrived safely in Mexico and were given a deserving welcome since they were the heroes.

Back in Texas Cabeza fought for the rights of the Indians even though they had mistreated them and ended up starving them. In  Paraguay he advocated for polices that benefited the Indians where he was removed forcefully from the office on grounds that he exploited the natives and was sent back to Spain on charges that he had mistreated the natives (Covey et al, 152). Cabeza was found guilty in Spain since he had over thirty transgression charges thus ended up getting burnished from possessing any Spanish possessions. He was given five years imprisonment but further appealed in North Africa where his punishment was rather commuted. 1559 is the year known when Cabeza died while in Spain where he was free from all the thirty two charges (Covey et al, 154). Cabeza is known to defend the Indians since the time he became a merchant in Texas. Machiavelli in his book identifies good leaders as those ones who do everything possible to ensure they remain in power. Deceitful and cruel leaders are also good leaders but they do not last in power for a long time. Thus Machiavelli would have praised the actions of Cabeza since regardless of making several mistakes throughout his leadership he had positive attributes such as being a merchant, doctor, surgeon, historians and fighting for the rights of the minorities making many Texans remain indebted to this man.

Machiavelli’s pragmatic political practices are way similar to Luther’s actions of spiritual self discipline. Machiavelli believes in respect for all people and respect for people’s freedoms and rights. In the same way Luther believes that respect is one act of ensuring that one possess self discipline. Luther believes that someone who is spiritually disciplines makes good decisions thus overcoming all the earthly freedoms and utilizing freedom in the best way possible (Krey et al, 112). Luther believes we need to follow the laws since spiritually disciplined people are followed by the Grace. Thus just like Machiavelli shows that people who do not follow the law pay the consequences, Luther encourages people to follow the laws since it is the right thing to do and people must be governed by the laws. People have the freedom to do what is good and thus people should follow the right choices failure to which the law catches up with them and eventually such people face judgments. Spiritual freedom demands the love for people to follow the law and demands of the law and live as the law obligates them to live (Krey et al, 112). Machiavelli just like Luther argues out that following the law prevents people from getting into problems.

The law is there to stay and thus people need to do as the law obligates since doing the contrary cuts shot peoples’ freedoms since they are judged by the same law they failed to obligate to. People have the freedom to do whatever pleases them in case it is acceptable and in line with the various spiritual or societal laws. Faith supports the law thus people follow the law in faith and thus people should perform deeds which are right and in accordance with the law (Krey et al, 112). Machiavelli gives examples of leaders who failed to follow the law and ended up leading for short periods of time. If the leaders had made good political choices in accordance with the law, they would have succeeded and ruled for many years. Thus people should follow examples of leaders and people who have made right choices of following the law and have ended up succeeding since following the law is an obligation everyone needs to meet.

Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl and Property

Introduction

Linda Brent (Harriet Jacobs) is the author of the book and she introduces the trial and tribulations which she experiences in the slavery land. Jacobs was born in 1831 in North Carolina. She lives with her both parents but later her mother dies and she is raised by maternal grandmother who later dies. At the age of 11, she is introduced to Dr. James Narcom (Dr. Flint) who is an inhumane monsters and a character who introduces the theme of sexual exploitation in the whole life of Jacobs. The latter presents her life experiences in America and how she struggles to free herself from slavery. Slaves are used as properties by the White men, and her first incidence of sexual exploitation is seen when she is sold to a White Lawyer named Sawyer whom they form sexual affairs and bears two children. In her point of view, Jacobs shows how the African-American women in South are struggling to free themselves from slavery and move to the North where they can live an independent life.  In American slavery, Jacobs’ experience of slavery represents how Africa American women are used as sexual objects by White men and their struggle for liberty and equal opportunity.

Jacobs lives under the male dominion of sexual control and she uncovers the experiences she meets in life as a property and sexual objects. She  attempts several times to run away from lascivious clutches,  as she clearly understand  that   women are pious and submissive but White men are violating the rights by disconnecting them with their families and making them  sexual objects. Jacobs asserts that slaveholders such as Dr. Flint acts against the moral law and fails to acknowledge humanity when inflicting torture to women. She goes and states that “Slavery is terrible for men; but it is far more terrible for women….. (Jacobs, 119). Women face hardships than men in that they are used as profitable properties through sexual harassment. The author makes it clear that even though enslaved men are able to endure   horror and rough treatment, women hearts are left with resentment and anguish when they see their children struggling with slavery. Women face a terrible situation with harsh punishments and insulting treatment from slaveholders’ wives. Their children are considered as slaves and their bodies are not theirs but rather they are master’s property. They experience pain and dreadful conditions as they are forced to get unwanted pregnancies and the appalling thing is that they are not enjoying the motherhood right (Jacobs, 60). The novel relates the incidents with the economics of slavery which was based on the idea that male were valued for their physical strength while female were referred as important  with respect to the number of offspring. Women have physical and emotional suffering while trying to gain self-definition, self-expression and self-assertion. Jacobs presents the African women of South who are denied the right to cater for their families. African-women are struggling for their female gender as well as community and family freedom (Jacobs, 48).

The author reveals the unrealistic standards on feminist gender in the American slavery era. African American women are suffering from sexual exploitation, denial of motherhood rights and racial subjugation. Focusing on her own narrative, Jacobs as a ‘slave girl’ is struggling to find ways which she can end slavery in the North (Jacobs, 44). Jacobs’s tries to show the White women White mistress have enslaved them as well as their children and so it is important for them to start the Abolitionist movement. Fitzhugh supports the idea and memorizes that slaveholders have extracted happiness from their lives. The author fights for freedom and convinces women the importance of ending slavery as well as sexual harassment. Jacobs’s plans to escape from slavery are portrayed in various instances. For example, during the ‘hiring day’ Jacobs tries to run away from her uncle’s house and when Dr Flint notices her attempt, he punishes her through sexual harassment (Jacobs, 44). Jacobs later meets a black man who plans to marry her but she refuses, and this leads to cruel punishment from Dr. Flint for rejecting the marriage.  The author assert that “when he told me that I was made for his use, made to obey his command…nothing but a slave…” pg (Jacobs,29). Dr Flint has a complete authority over her life and she exists as a slave in his house. At this point, Jacobs accepts their immoral and illegal acts and believes that    she has undeveloped personalities and slaveholders will not have final control of her life.

African American women are suffering from psychological abuse from White men while attempting to gain sexual identity. The entire novel portrays a vivid picture of Black feminism which is bounded by class oppression, racism and sexism. Jacobs, from her young age has tried to fight with slavery in order achieve her social identity and freedom. Similarly, African American women suffer from discrimination from ‘white feminist’ and the racial division is diminishing their strength in develop their social movement (Jacobs, 12). Black women in particular are denied their rights and they do not get the opportunity to express their views in their homes or in the community. They are subjected to verbal abuse which the legal discourse overlooks the matter (Jacobs, 46). In the novel, there is no law to protect the slave girl or do deliver her from sexual harassment. Slaveholders have placed unbroken rule of silence which all slaves should follow. The author asserts that “Dr. Flint swore he would kill me, if I was not as silent as the grave” (Jacobs, 46). This means that African American women live under the dominion of White men and they are relatively powerless as supposed to keep silent.

African American women face social, ethical and economy difficulties.  In America, there is different in structure of power between Black and white women. Black women need recognition and self identity, and as Jacobs becomes interested with abolitionist movement, Black women follows their civil right movement to eliminate racism and sexism (Jacobs, 42). They have encountered many incidents of discrimination such as racial segregation where public facilities such education are provided to White women while African American women remain illiterate. In addition, they are suffering in exploitation of economy in that they work as slaves in South with no gain. Since they are the slaveholders’ properties, then they are not supposed to hold any property (Jacobs, 46). During slavery, women suffer from depression as they are used as sexual tools by men and also they are disconnected from their families. They are unable to speak as there is not law which can free them from slavery.

Conclusion

Then novel portrays a vivid image of African American women through the slavery experience of Jacobs. African American women are under male-chauvinist and White-supremacy. They are regarded as sexual properties to satisfy the need of men. Jacobs shows that women are denied their rights and they live under the dominion of slaveholders. They are forced to bear children and they do not enjoy their motherhood. They experience physical brutality, endure the unendurable and suffer the insufferable. Jacobs’s struggles in all mean to free from slavery though many of her attempts leads to cruel punishment and sexual harassment from White men and women. Similarly, African American women start the feminist movement to end slavery and to gain identity as well as their rights in the American society.

One dead, eight injured in Michigan strip mall shooting

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/dead-injured-michigan-strip-mall-shooting-article-1.2823749

On Sunday 9th  October  2016 at 3:45 a.m, police said that there was a shooting which occurred in Michigan strip mall in Grand Rapids where one  man  who was aged 20years  was murdered and 8 were injured  and  hospitalized. The police department in Grand Rapids said that they had no idea of what was happening and on their way to rescue the multitude; they came near a place where shootings were taking place (NEW YORK DAILY NEWS, 2016).

In this case, I will apply the crime patter theory as it explains the occurrence of a crime as well as the nature of the crime (Hart & Lersch, 2015). With respect to the case, it seems that the offenders had targeted the place or location (Grand Rapids) and there were things (nodes) which motivated the offenders to commit the crime. The Grand Rapids is a developed city in terms of economy, culture and large population and so the offenders knew the area is favorable for crimes. It seems like for them to commit the crime in this place, they had known the place well from their daily activities routine and the routes (personal paths) they used to visit the place helped them to create the awareness space and to become familiar with the target place (Hart & Lersch, 2015). In other words, the city structure as well the everyday activities assisted them in creating a cognitive map. The theory applies in the case in that after understanding the nodes and activity paths, they also examined the (edges) and understood that there were minimal physical and mental obstacles which could hinder them from causing the crime (Hart & Lersch, 2015). Generally, with respect to the theory, the crime happened in Grand Rapids city because this is a  place which  has a  shopping mall, restaurants, shops, cars and other congested business and this means that  the place is vulnerable of crime as offenders visits the place regularly and they have various targets.

Social Studies—the Kindergarten Experience

How does social study lesson connect to the year-long theme of “How Things Change"?
In reference to the video history has a long held privileged place within the social studies.  For many years the specific thinking skills related to history directives was those allied with making sense of time as well as chronology. The video suggests that history’s incorporation into social studies meant that it was simply viewed as a source of data in unraveling current hitches, rather than being recognized as a exclusive form of inquiry. Historical rational skills contain the sequencing of events, the analysis of pattern as well as placement of various events in background (Saxe, 2013).

How do the experiences lead students to understanding the importance of a map?

Geography is an important as well as rich dimension of social studies thereby; it help individuals In creating awareness with the natural plus the human surrounding of the environment. It is through the map that students are able to understand how geography provides border horizon in every day global changing. According to the video geography in social studies not only provide  a material  base of knowledge related to the real world but also ensures students are able to understand of how available abilities makes demands in modern life. Globe is the best representation of earth thus; the usage of maps generates spoken words which provide facts in special code (Saxe, 2013).

Explain how tactile, auditory, and visual learning styles are consistently addressed throughout social studies lesson.
Social study is a genuine study where all forms and styles of learning are addressed. Visual is one of the learning styles considered in social studies learning probably where pictures and diagrams are demonstrated. Students will tend to use words like ‘show me’, let have a look. Tactile is also another style used in the study especially where someone has a preference for physical experience which includes touch, holding or doing things practically. On the highly used in the study especially where other hand auditory style is practices where information’s needs to be changed into spoken words through listening (Saxe, 2013).

Critical Review Of Oppressed By Evolution

Matt starts by acknowledging that all living things on earth descended from the ancestors who lived billions of years ago. He comments on the theory by Darwin that is in favor of evolution theory.  According to Darwin, we are all blood kin to other organisms and we are closely related to great apes compared to spiders. The evolution theory reads the shared features between families. Thus, this means people are not unique from other family groups (Matt, 78). Matt also comments on the opposition of Christians on the idea of evolution. Christians have placed a strong opposition to discontinue biologists from teaching people about evolution. They have also tried to oblige teachers to handle evolution as a mere theory and not a fact. Matt strongly believes that the religious antievolutionists will continue fighting biologists on the issue of evolution, thus a need to refight them for a period of one to two centuries (Matt, 80). Matt disagrees with the reasons brought by Christian antievolutionists to oppose evolution. For instance they claim that evolution issue is just a struggle between the godless and the creationists. Some Christians oppose the idea of evolution simply because it contradicts the bible. And according to him not every word in the bible is true. Other Christians oppose the idea of evolution because it puts human beings to the state of beasts.

The author’s main point in this case is the issue of evolution. He emphasizes on the views of the evolutionists and the views by the antievolutionists. One of the evolutionists he bases on is Darwin. However, he discusses various views of the antievolutionists most especially the conservative Christians. In addition to the conservative Christians, Matt also recorded Robert’s view that science is politics where people just come with ideologies (Matt, 83). And it is nature controls our minds limiting our freedom to question the authority. Matt also included the views of some people concerning science for example scholar Ania Grobicki’s view on science and he described science as a way of describing nature, reality and how things work effectively more so in production of goods and profits but it is unsatisfactory in other respects.

The author’s statements are consistent with the current thoughts on the issue of evolution. This is because; the current evolutionists still support Darwin theory of evolution. Similarly, the current Christians are against the scientific views on evolution. The current evolutionary however has come to focus on the existence of genetic inheritance and the processes occurring in the gene frequencies. Though this was unnoticed in Darwin’s theory of evolution and other old evolutionists.

In conclusion, the article discuses the earliest views on evolution. In spite of supporting scientists in the article, Matt at last develops a strong argument against science. He says, science has nothing to deal with moral values or the realm of supernatural. According to him scientists have no expert opinions regarding this. The article has covered much on evolution and different views on evolution basing on Darwin’s theory. The work is important in defending most work done by the earlier scientists. This is because his work has mostly been in favor of the evolutionists.  For example he agrees with Darwin that people are closely related to the apes. He disagrees with the Christian claims and challenges antievolutionists by arguing that not every word in the bible is literally true. However, Matt does not entirely support the scientists; he concludes that science has nothing to do with moral values (Matt, 83). This means that science is not completely perfect as thought by some scientists. Therefore this article is a lesson to many scientists.

The Odyssey

  1. 1

Topic: Telemachus’ journey

Argument: comparison of Telemachus’ journey with that of Odysseus

Telemachus’ journey can be significantly compared to that of Odysseus. These two in some ways parallel each other and also sometimes completely differ. Telemachus begins his journey as a young, less mature boy and in the absence of his father. He then becomes timid, spineless and a shy boy highly pampered by his mother. Being a son of a famous father in the world, he has more to achieve. The death of the suitors who used to take advantage of him shows the way his journeys and problems mature him from being a timid, shy boy to a mature man. Similarly, Odysseus’ journey was also a lesson to him to learn so many things which he had not experienced before including poverty, suffering and other difficult things of nature. Telemachus and Odysseus have comparable but different journeys in life which significantly transform them throughout the epic and they meet different forces both supernatural and human which influence their lives. One of the similarities in the journeys of Odysseus and Telemachus is that both were so much liked by Athena who escorts both on the journeys in Greece (Tracy, 17). In this essay, I will explore Telemachus’ journey and how he was shaped in many ways, in comparison to his father Odysseus.

Telemachus was left as the man of the house after his father had gone for Trojan War. Despite his immaturity at the start of the book, he eventually matures into a man who later tries to revenge the abuse of the suitors flooding their place. In the beginning, Telemachus is so scared that he cannot even approach the suitors (Homer & Stanley, 23). He also loses hope whether his father was still living. His uncertainty about his father worries him and this takes him to Athena because he had even become tired with the suitors. Athena guides Telemachus about his father and how he should go about to find his father’s whereabouts.

Telemachus becomes courageous and starts a mission to look for his father Homer & Stanley, 25). The progress made by Telemachus since the start of the odyssey is noticeable from being separated from everything in order to become one of the honored sons in the eyes of powerful people just as his father Odysseus was. Telemachus is very separated and distant from everybody, he then goes ahead to develop self-confidence as he goes to look for his father. He figures out his plans with Athena, thereafter going out to meet different kings and queens who had a broader knowledge about his father. Through meeting these people, Telemachus started progressing from a fearful and a shy boy into a confident and a fearless man. Telemachus’ evolution was so stunning because he was able to change very fast and this was due to the people he started meeting and the places he visited.

On his first meeting with Athena, Telemachus is a detached man who is not sure of his surroundings. He acts very distant even before meeting Athena because he is not certain himself. Even as the suitors fumble through their home and eat all the food plus the wine, he is not able to stand up for himself but rather lets them to do the destruction as he watches (Homer & Stanley, 5). This character is a bit far different from his father’s character because Odysseus is known to be a tough and a world-hardener who has survived many worst wars ever.

However, as Telemachus grew up, he proves to be a proactive man with dignity and power just as his father Odysseus. In his chat with Athena, he is able to understand the need to save his father. Athena was able to give him the knowledge about his father and this gave him courage (Homer & Stanley, 23). While listening, in their conversation with Athena, he begins to develop proactive actions. This gave him the courage to send off the suitors. After getting the reassurance from Athena, he is now sure of himself and he now goes back with power to send the suitors away. He says, “You must leave my palace” (Homer & Stanley, 42). Telemachus got courage and sent away suitors from his house, the action that marked a dramatic change in the life of Telemachus. He is taking charge and has power to make things happen for himself just like his father. His drastic change scared the suitors who had to bit their lips. Additionally, they got scared by his appearance because he strode in too, with a bronze spear in the grip, two sleek hounds at his heals (Homer & Stanley, 41). He gained power to start taking leadership and to lead the assembly. Telemachus changed very much to the extent of taking risks in his life. He is so courageous and now makes pacts about his father, and risks his life in his journey confidently.         After setting sail, Telemachus becomes more confident the farther he gets from Ithica. It reached a moment when Telemachus became certain about finding his father and he confidently meets with various kings. Telemachus wisdom can also be compared to his father’s as stated by Menelaus. “Your father’s son you are, your words have got all his wisdom”, Menelaus said. This was after Telemachus expressed himself before him. At that level, Telemachus is showing much maturity and wisdom, he inquires truth from Menelaus whether good or bad. After learning his father’s whereabouts, Telemachus following the instructions of Athena goes to Eumaios’s hut where he finds his father Odysseus. After getting an assurance from Odysseus that he was his real son, Telemachus rejoiced and started plotting to destroy the suitors.

Telemachus a starts as a young boy in this book of Odyssey but in his experience, he is able to develop as the most significant character. Telemachus starts as a shy, timid, and a fearful young boy. The suitors tried to show disrespect to the Telemachus plus the mother. But Telemachus started maturing up slowly by slowly. He asserts himself by calling for a meeting of elders so as to protest the activities of the suitors (Homer & Stanley, 16). That is when he speaks so well and impresses some of the elders. However, the suitors still showed no respect for Telemachus and the mother. This is when Athena sensed some and started to protect the prince. This means Athena plays a significant role in developing Telemachus as a character.

Athena initiates Telemachus’ confidence, because when they just met for the first, Telemachus is pathetic, lonely and aloof. With this state, he was not able to remove the suitors out of his father’s palace. But the more they met with Athena, the more confident and mature he became. Telemachus is also determined to know the truth about himself and his father’s whereabouts due to the fact that he is not sure of himself. That is why he says “mother says I am his son”. Meaning he is not sure whether that is true (Homer & Stanley, 7). This therefore motivated him to find the truth about him from his father Odysseus. This was also caused by the character of the suitors who took over his father’s palace. This act left him not sure whether that place was their home or not. Therefore he wanted to get the truth. Telemachus is also known to be a wise young man; this is evident as the elders become impressed with his words. Also Menelaus also appreciates him as a wise man on how he spoke to him. Finally, he was determined to send off the suitors from their home because he was tired of how they behaved. This made him to come up powerfully he was observed as one of the major characters in the book.

Conclusion

In exploring the journey of Telemachus as compared to Odysseus, we find that Telemachus started as a shy, timid and aloof boy so different from his father Odysseus. But what Telemachus encountered faced in life taught him and transformed into a fearless man. Telemachus starts to mature eventually and swiftly and he became confident and fearless. That is why he reaches the level of risking his life no matter the condition with determination to find his father’s whereabouts. His determination finally helps him to locate his father who assured him that he is a true son of his. After that, he had courage to destroy the suitors. His transformation is what makes him appear an important character in the book.

Stoller and Murray

Both Stoller and Murray introduce the topic of high education but they differ on how they define the purpose of education. Paul Stoller focuses on intellectualism and asserts that in four years college, students should not only be taught about job preparation but they should also learn the skills of critical thinking (Stoller, 2012). On the other hand, Murray argues that college education is important for students with high IQ but instead of wasting 4-year College, students with low IQ should attend vocational schools to gain practical skills (Murray, 2007).

In his argument, Stoller asserts that in America, there is a high level of anti-intellectualism which has affected both social and historical life. There are anti-intellectual narratives in political discourse and the political system is undermining the higher education. For example, Mr. Bruni increases the anti-intellectualism by asserting that 53.6% of college graduates under the age of 25 were unemployed…(Stoller, 2012). In this statement, Mr Bruni tends to state that the degree which these students acquired in college was not necessary. Therefore, students should gain job skills so that they can maintain their competitive edge in the market. Other problem is that America is undermining the education by blocking the resources which students use to complete their education. For example, Mr Romney asserts that interest rates of students’ loan should be double and also he suggests that they should not get loan but rather they should find cheap colleges (Stoller, 2012).

On the hand, Murray asserts that college education is important in that college degree helps students to get a good job. However, he argues that students whose 1Q is below 110 should go to Vocation College instead of wasting their time in college. Only students who have high 1Q can do well in 4-years college education (Murray, 2007). The problem with college education is that many students are forced by their parents to acquire analytical skills and to get the opportunity of living a quality life. In addition, qualified and unqualified students mix and majority changes their career and becomes interested in practical skills. The institution tries to meet the new demand and implements practical skills programs which takes 4-years instead for 2-year in vocation schools. In many companies, practical skills are valued with respect to certain abilities than college education. For example ‘Walk into Microsoft or Google with evidence that you are a brilliant hacker, and the job interviewer is not going to fret if you lack a college transcript… (Murray, 2007). Thus, vocation education is important in that students will gain practical skills and utilize them in real world.

Both authors value the importance of education but there is a distinction on who should get the education. Stoller asserts that the only way to combat anti-intellectualism is through providing students with critical thinking skills. However, the political ideas focus on developing a population which is high skilled but is unable to think critically in social context. Stoller argues that young people should be educated on how to think critically so that they can innovate and foresee the strategic ways of improving the economy (Stoller, 2012). On the other hand, Mullar beliefs that college education should be offered to students with high IQ since such students will learn analytical skills beyond their intellectual capacity. Student with lower IQ will not have a clear understanding of what they learn and end up wasting their time. Thus, such students should attend vocational skills to learn technical specialties and apply it the modern business (Murray, 2007).

Hemingway: Life in Michigan

Ernest Hemingway was a famous author who had experienced shocking events through his life. These shocking events played a significant role in what he wrote about and the consequences of his story. He experienced many problems on his childhood and this contributed to his individuality and wisdom for his future outcomes. Starting from 1899, after Hemingway’s family bought property near Walden Lake when Hemingway was a few weeks old, he grew up in a strong religion, hard task culture which granted him self determination (Hemingway, 02:05). Being raised in northern Michigan, Hemingway was taught by his father how to hunt and fish while his mother introduced him to church activities. During the summer, his family spent much of their time in the woods of northern Michigan.

It is factual that Hemingway’s life in northern Michigan played a significant role in his writing since it posed a thoughtful effect on the American writers of his life time. Many of his tasks were viewed as the classic of America while some of them have been made into motion portraits. The northern Michigan helped him in his writing as it was a society which was very strict in disciplinarians. He tried as hard as he could to evade the traditions in his society that were forced in him while still young. As it is stated in the documentary that Hemingway was a good observer of people, it helped him observe the world from his own perception which gave him the idea of composing stories (Hemingway, 07:50).

Some of the people that were interviewed in the documentary include Michael R. Federspiel, Ken Marek, James Sanford, and Ernie Mainland among others. The main reason why these people were interviewed is because they knew Hemingway very well and some of them such as Sanford and Mainland were his family members (nephews). Thus, they gave first information regarding what they knew about Hemingway’s story. Some of the books that were quoted in the documentary include “A Farewell to Arms”, “The Old Man and the Sea” and “The Last Good Country”. The reason why these books were quoted is because they were the first books that Hemingway wrote (except “The Last Good Country” which was written by Nick Adams) and some of them contributed significantly in his career.

The story of how Ernest Hemingway grew up to become the great author together with the society he grew in as highlighted in the documentary explains the themes of development and traditional cultures exhibited in the “Indian Camp” story (Hemingway, 30).

My love for the ‘Twins’

Majority of people in the world believe that they have a purpose, something they were born to do before their life is over. There are those who believe that their purpose is to teach, heal an even mentor others. Others, the more artistic people believe that their purpose is to create through art and music. While some have the talent to sing and create music, others play the important role of being the audience, the people who appreciate the music. For musicians, there exists the need to express a feeling, to get some form of attention or the need to create and share the musician’s vision through music. Though venturing into music may be based on some form of personal desire, artists with common agendas and a common passion for music often end up collaborating in songs while others decide to form music bands. Whether for the purpose of seeking recognition or reaching the world through music, music groups and bands are common and often work together to produce high quality masterpieces. From a very young age, music was a significant part of my life. Even though I could not sing, at least not professionally, I was exposed to various music genres where I got to listen to various artists among which were the ‘Twins’.

Twins was a Hong Kong Cantopop due created by Emperor Entertainment Group in 2001. The group comprised of Gillian Chung and Charlene Choi, two girls that became not only popular in Hong Kong but also recognized as one of the top bands in China. Their fan base comprised of people from Taiwan, Canada, United States and Malaysia to mention a few. Their popularity was based on the quality of the songs they produced and they evolution from targeting youths to producing music that attracted wider and diverse type of audience. From the very first day I listened to their first album, I became a loyal fan and bought all of their twelve Cantonese studio albums, all four of their live albums, all of their compilation and Mandarin studio albums. Their music got me hooked especially because of its good quality and rhythm, proof of their quality being the dominance of their music singles dominance in various musical charts.

During one of her Hong Kong summer vacations, Chung worked as a part time model as was the case with Choi who appeared in various advertisements and eventually became famous after participating in a Y2K television program, radio television Hong Kong. The two eventually met and formed the group ‘Twins’ which was later signed by Emperor Entertainment Group.  The Twins released their first EP in 2001 and my all time favorite track was ‘open love, secret love, tutoring institute’ which went on to become a hit single. In its first week of selling, the EP went platinum and my love for the Twins’ music was so great that I could not help but feel excited for their success. They went on to release a second EP in November the same year and my love for their music grew as I listened to every song.

One thing I loved about the Twins’ music is that they always remained relevant and sang about issues that their fans could relate with. In 2002 for example, they released their third EP. Being close to the Chinese New Year, the EP had a single titled Ma Bao 668 which was a greeting song to welcome the New Year. After three successful EP’s, the Twins released their first debut album in 2002 followed by a second album the same year. The success of the albums was great and with the new songs and music videos, their fan base grew tremendously.

The year 2002 was quite busy for the Twins as it was also the year they held their first concert. I remember how sad I felt not being able to attend not only their first concert but also the two that followed in 2003 especially the ones held in Guangzhou. Being a student, I had other priorities and responsibilities that made it impossible to attend any of the concerts regardless of how badly I wanted to. However, I still followed the music lives of the Twins, sharing their various achievements from a distance. My admiration for their music was shared by a significant number of people across the globe and in the time between 2001 and 2003, the Twins successfully won a total of 72 awards. The awards were received from major media organizations in Hong Kong such as TVB and Metro Radio.

I remember the excitement I felt hearing the song Bian Bian Bian as the theme song for the movie titled ‘The Twins Effect’. The song was sung by the Twins and Jackie Chang, a renowned movie actor not only in china but across the world. Despite Jackie Chang’s prowess in acting, I admit that the Twin’s song in the movie made me like it even more. The song was part of the songs released in the Twin’s third album released in 2003. The theme song was however chosen from the second version of the album released in June the same year.

Another thing that I found intriguing about the Twins is their diversity in type of music and their ability to reach different types of audiences. In 2004 for instance, they released children albums specifically intended for children. The tracks in the albums comprised of stories and nursery rhymes that appealed to younger audiences. To add on to their appeal, they released an album called magic whose songs told stories of how magical the world of music could be. I remember wishing that such music existed back in the days when I was young.

In 2005, the devastating rumors that the Twins were splitting up started to circulate the media and I could not help but feel sad. I was a great fan of the duo and a separation meant that I could no longer enjoy the excitement and thrill of anticipating the moment I hear a new song from the Twins. Despite the rumors, the Twins not only attended the MTV Asia Awards in 2006 but also celebrated their sixth anniversary together in 2007 and went on a concert tour to North America. Their story took a sad turn in 2008 when private images of Gillian were leaked online forcing her to hide from the public eye. On July that year, the Twins announced that they would be splitting up and even though they came back together to release an album in 2011 and later in 2012, the separation caused a significant amount of damage to the duo.

My passion for their music will always remain strong and steadfast. I often find myself replaying most of their songs during my free time. Even though they are not the only group I listen to, I tend to favor their music and listen to it often. To me, music is an art, a way of the artist expressing themselves through words. Often times, I feel as if I can see the vivid picture that the artist is trying to paint through the lyrics in the song. Such is the feeling I get when listening to music by the Twins.

Literature for Young Children

Theme: All about me and my family

My house

The book my house was written by Patricia Jensen and illustrated by Wayne Backer mainly to capture the attention of children. The book consists of a boy who compares his house with that of a friend ( Jensen & Becker, 1989). This book can be used in teaching children as they list some of the items found at their homes. I chose this book because it is so elementary in developing the knowledge of the young child especially in some basic items at home.

People in my family

This book was written by Jeff Moss and it defines the people in my family as those you meet each day. It focuses on several occupations and how they are important in our lives every day and as part of our family. For example a postman brings mail through rain, sleet snow or hail to ensure that our letters are safe. A fireman ensures to put the fire out in case there is fire anywhere, thus a fireman is part of our family. The baker is always responsible of making our bread on a daily basis. Whenever we want bread, we just run to the baker. A teacher works a whole day to teach important things and he ensures you don’t forget (Moss & Brown, 1983). Thus, in that manner, he is part of our family. A barber with his large and comfortable chair on which we sit on, does his level best to ensure that our hair is cut properly and looks good. The driver drives us to take us where we want to go at any time. The dentist is always taking care of our teeth as the doctor makes us well in case we are feeling sick. The grocer sells to us the things we need on a daily basis for example eggs, bread, cheese and meat. The cleaner is always that our clothes are clean such that we look best (Moss & Brown, 1983). Finally, the trash collector will always ensure our trash is taken away to keep our homes clean. Therefore, all these people who are helpful in our day to day life are part of our family. This book helps the children to know some of the important people in our daily life and the role they play and how they become part of or family.

Little blue and little yellow.

This book was devised by Leo Lionni in form of a story while in a train trip with the grandchildren. He tore circles of colors from a magazine. The story has various layers of meaning from the story of friendship through exploring color. He explores a story of two best friends little blue and little yellow. After a long period of separation, they eventually reunite and the two hug each other until they become little greens (Lionni, 2011). Their change of color makes them to be rejected by their parents as they reach home. The two meet again and in the course of crying, their tears turn them back to their original. The two inform their parents about the whole thing and as the parents hug each other they also turn green. Despite the aspect of color, the book brings out the aspect of friendship and we see after little blue reuniting with little yellow as friends, they later separate and go home (Lionni, 2011). This book explains the power of friendship in a family. The three books are all important as far as the theme is concerned because they all deal with what is practiced at home.
