Reflective letter

Practice perfects our abilities.  The English class has helped me in many ways such as increasing my writing abilities.  For instance, writing two paragraphs in an article helped me to trace the things that we learned in the class lesson.  One of the main things that an article needs is to write down the things we have learned.  By this, I am able to preserve information well because I review it through the written down notes.  Moreover, I have learnt how to compose several kinds of essays such as professional, casual, cause and effect and the argumentative essays. Throughout the class lessons, the class practiced one of these essay types of essays, where I would start and finish them before the others.  The ideas that I got from these essays helped me to include transitions, which I noted were some words that made my ideas connect and flow smoothly.  These skills helped me on how to write a summary much like in the essay that gave a format to follow.

The class gave me new writing skills that help in future.  For instance, I have already learned how to think fast and derived quick ideas from the essays.  Getting into details of the essay ideas was one thing that challenged me.  Continuing to stay in the class increased my quick type skill and quick comprehension of ideas so that I could have time to edit the essay.  At first, I got confused but I understood the essay outline that gathered information.

The English class gave me a good writing experience.  Though sometimes the essays became tiresome, I remembered I will use these skills in my profession and practiced more.  I have gained much knowledge in this class about my style and practice of writing. One of the characteristics of this class that was of much importance was the writing of articles.  I was capable to preserve new skills that I have learnt and applied them to my writing.  I also constructed a writing timetable so that I could finish my work on the needed time.   I will continue reserving the journals as I currently do because I saw that it helps me in preserving information.  Finally, in relating the skills that I have and working on them, they will become my routine on writing. Therefore, I will become a professional writer.

Though this lesson is informative and effective, I think it needs more writing partners to make the lesson productive mainly during discussions.  Only group discussions, only a few people will be able to talk, as others are shy or have different opinions. Group discussion and partner working benefit a class, because the students are able to talk of their thoughts and judgments. At the end of the discussion, the whole class shares their ideas that they presented.

This class has aroused many skills that I did not recognize before.  I feel that I have made an improvement in understanding writing techniques.  Writing has not been a best subject to me.  This is because it is comprised of many rules in it.  The English classes made me understand every approach of these rules that would make it hard for me to understand. I learnt every type of essay, its structure and composition.  This concept improved my paraphrasing abilities.

I believe these skills have made me have new understanding, as I now know the benefits of it. New abilities that I have gained has made ma have an organized way of learning.  If this lesson had not given me all the benefits I gained from it, I would have struggled through it and would not have gained the knowledge I currently have. The pace we used to work with in the class was rapid but it was the best way to keep our minds focused and on work every time.  One thing I enjoyed was the group discussions as we socialized more and had more review time.  I really enjoyed the time in the course and I feel it was great experience. The topics could drag me in and I was able to raise my personal thought on a specific issue.  The only thing that I would adjust if I were to take the class once more is to connect to the people you are writing about and try to get interested to the subject given to you.  This makes the writing to become enjoyable and makes ease the flow of ideas.

I enjoyed the lessons and the tasks given.  The other effective thing was the social connection with the other classmates. Our English lecturer always emphasized how effective it was to have social time during the kind of lesson.  We got the chances to share our opinions for some time and to talk about anything we wanted at the start of the lesson. In addition, English was an effective course to take.  I learned many things about general writing using my own method.  I gained skills that I currently use in my writings, which make my working effective.  As these skills are essential, I will use them to my professional life.  The future occupations can be writing several college admittance essays and learning essays.  I develop and consider these skills as I think they are important to my success of becoming a professional writer.

Depict the heroic nature of Antigone

Antigone is the daughter of Oedipus; a king and Jacosta who was the mother of the king of Thebes who he unknowingly married after killing his father to inherit his kingdom. The heroic nature of Antigone is depicted in various ways.one of the main way is through her name which may even mean opposition was born in her. Antigone is not loving, and easy going around people who are close to her. This depicts a lot courage in terms of she does not expect much favor from them and show independence (Sophocles, and Blondel 12). This qualities are closely associated with heroic nature.

Another heroic nature depicted by Antigone is through her commitment to blood-kinship friendship. This is seen through polynieces and Etekeoles who she stands firm for in spite of them being traitors. She seeks to wash their corpses and bury them in Athens though they are perceived as traitors who should be left outside Athens so that their bodies may rot. Seeking friendship with kin rather than to go out of your way to impress and find other friends depicts heroism nature of a woman who would rather stand alone. She also shows commitment for the family as she wants to bury her kin and mourn them, which shows her strong feminism side (Sophocles, and Ruby Blondell 77)

Atigone does not seek solace in marriage and motherhood which the society prioritize for women.Ismene, her sister, proposes Haimon, a suitor for her sister to marry but she is not interested. She rather focuses on her death and joining her kin who are dead. She is full of grief due to the fact that she lost her paternal family members. Grief that surpasses marriage and motherhood. The fact that she goes against the norms of society without fear of reprehension and other repercussions shows her heroic nature which remains unmoved and untamed. (Weinreb, Lloyd L 76)

Due to quarrelling with her sister, Ismene, Antigone is isolated from the male world of Kreon, her female friends, her family and the entire society as a whole. This makes her to travel to the outside dominated male world of battfields.this choice shows the heroic nature of a woman who is not afraid of male dominated world, but she is ready to join them in the deadly battlefields.( Sophocles, and Ruby Blondell 70)

The society norms dictated on women to wear cloths which would make them seem more submissive, self-controlled and aware of their place in society which did not permit them to have knowledge of the political world of men. This is not seen in the nature of Antigone who knew all these rules imposed on women but instead dwelt in the world of men. Antigone goes directly opposite of the stereotype woman of the society which is seen through her lack of emotions and her lack of interest in marriage and also her use of war language which is seen as masculine. She is also ready to mourn her family deaths without approval from men. This shows heroism nature to stand above everything that the society beliefs (Winnington-Ingram 71)

She breaks protocol of the society by doing all gender roles undertaken by women and also the ones undertaken by the males. Mourning, washing of clothes and giving offering to the corpse is done by women but burying the dead is done by men but she does it in spite of the traditions which are imposed on women in the society. Weinreb, Lloyd L. 65)

In her values and virtues, attitudes and behavior she resembles heroes, for example Achilles. This is seen by her anger which is powerful; her self- assertion and defiance to society and even authority. She believes in revenge and faces death with open eyes and an open mind and eventually brings it upon herself. She is ready to sacrifice her life for what is noble, which shows she is a moral upright woman. She is concerned with honor, status and time. She admires recognition, fame and glory just like a warrior and king hence she has heroic nature (Sophocles, and Ruby Blondel 65l)

Analysis

The Blank Space dramatizes a love story of a girl who is mad with her partner. It is a story of a wealthy woman who comes across a genetic man with who she forms a successful relationship unit an incident of texting occurs. The scene shows a man texting, presumably cheating on the woman and this makes her to switch from a loving girlfriend to a stereo typical one who is crazed and obsessive(Valenti,1).   Therefore, the song represents a character vs. character conflict since the female character is pitted against the male character. The male character is presented as being the antagonist preventing the woman from her goal of having a successful relationship.

While the woman initially portrayed as being comfortable and enjoying the relationship, the man is seen texting and the audience is made to believe that the man is cheating on her.  Through this betrayal a conflict arises, which changes the drama altogether from being a successful to one experiencing infighting, destructions and finally separation. In the conflict ,  Swift is seen crying with her  mascara- streaked appearance on her face , throwing a plant at the man ,  destroys his shirts by cutting them into pieces  and trying to cut down a rather big  tree on which she had previously curved  the names (Valenti,1).  Hence, the conflict is portrayed clearly in this sense with the woman being shown as the offended party.   Throughout the drama in the song, the theme of love and betrayal is majorly presented. The woman in the song is shown to not be lacking in material wealth, so that the only thing missing in her life is love in a trustworthy relationship. In this song the reality of unrequited love forms the basis of this theme

The persona in this song is the narrator who’s also the protagonist is telling the story from the first-person point of view in the song.  The speaker is directly involved in the events of this drama and she is singing or telling the story from the “I” perspective. In fact, as the audience watches the speakers it can be noticed that she is using “I, me, us, we” which indicates that the drama is unfolding and being told from the first –person perspective. The speaker uses a subjective voice while addressing the audience, with which she uses to describe her feelings, opinions and thoughts about her past and present relationship.  This is seen when the speaker says that “I’m dying to see how this one ends” to show her feelings about the new relationship she is in presently and “New money, suit and tie, I can read you like a magazine, ain’t it funny rumors fly, and I know you heard about me…” which greatly represents her opinions about her partner in the relationship (TylorSwiftVEVO, 1).  In addition, she says that “Got a long list of ex-lovers, they’ll tell you I’m insane “with her subjective voice suggesting her feelings towards past lovers and how her relationship has been (TylorSwiftVEVO, 1).

The audience of the song seems to be her present and past lovers, people with opinions about her love life and those in such a relationship. She seems to try to prove a point against people who view her as being boy crazy, and unable to be in a steady relationship.    The persona sings that she is “a nightmare dressed like a daydream” probably to  send out a message to her audience that  the kind of relationship she desires is can only be found in fantasy . The other characters are confidantes in whom the woman character confides and their presences mainly reveal the thoughts, feelings and the personality of the main character. These characters are person whose presence in the songs reveals that Swift is a wealthy woman, clingy and needy and in desperate need of love with no betrayal or cheating for that matter.  Through the characters, it is portrayed that Swift can interchange men easily whenever she is presumably cheated on.  The other characters also depict her as being crazy, desperate and representing a world where sexist caricatures, relating to women who can be acted out for the amusement of the audience which is a great ridiculous display.

The action in the song appears to occur mostly during the day with the speaker recounting the previous events or experiences with her ex-lovers during that time.  The speaker is seems to be sharing the situation in her life as is happening presently  , a case of romance where everything seems to be perfect until there is a sudden change of direction.   The passion with which the speaker is communicating appears to show that she is sharing a part of her past in the flashback and present life. The speaker also occupies a central part of the scene, so that she forms part of the unfolding drama.   The psychical setting of the drama is taking place at home, inside and outside a house.  In general, the motivation compelling the speaker to sing the song seems to her experience in love life and relationships.

 Woman at Point Zero

From the book, “Woman at Point Zero,” the narrator of the book is Nawal El Saadawi, who happens to be psychiatrist responsible for interviewing women in prison. Nawal tells an unhappy story of a woman named Firdaus. She is a woman who flees away from her abusive husband and becomes a prostitute. She then changes to be an office worker. Later she decides to change the job and becomes a prostitute again. She also goes to an extent of killing a man who had forced her to accept him as her pimp. The author meets Firdaus as she was about to be prosecuted. In this case, we are going to concentrate on the relationship that Firdaus had with her parent, her education, and her husband.

Firdaus had a strong connection with her mother when she was younger. The eyes of her mother mesmerized, and she saw this as a symbol of connection, safety, security, presence, and support. She remembers when she was learning how to walk and remembers her mother’s eyes as something that could support her. It's these eyes that made her to think that she was being cared for and looked after. This portrayed her mother as an affectionate being. However, this was different as she grew up she began to ask why she could not associate with her father. Her mother sent some women that circumcised her. At this point, she understood that the society she thought of was not similar to that she saw eye to eye with her mother. She saw her mother’s eyes as evils and was no longer a hero she up to (Saʻdāwī, Ḥatātah and Cooke).

It’s her mother that made her to undergo Female Genital Mutilation. At this point she realized that sex was only to be pleasurable to her again, it was for men to enjoy. It was at this point that she changed how she viewed her mother and she was no longer a hero to her. She saw her mother as the first person to subject her to body harm. She started fearing her mother and she saw her as a product of tradition, and everyone in the community lacked individualism. She could no longer associate her mother with anything light. She could no longer experience the slightest joy or “light.” Her mother eyes now reflected her depression. Her mother was no longer special; she only practiced inhumanity. Firadaus’ mother was therefore significant for the theme of this story simply, it helps one to be able to understand why Firdaus developed a negative attitude towards her mother. Firdaus was raised without a father, and so she could not be able to understand who her father really was. When she finally managed to ask her mother who how she managed to raise without a father, her mother became very furious. This made her mother to take a knife and she therefore cut a piece of flesh from Firdaus’ thighs, “…a woman who was carrying a small knife or maybe a razor blade. They cut off a piece of flesh from between my thighs” (Saʻdāwī, Ḥatātah and Cooke, 24). Firdaus was not able to sleep that night, due to the pain that she was feeling. This really made to see her mother as an animal and not a human being. Moreover, that action made Firdaus to see herself as a child who was not important and did not deserve anything in this world.

Firdaus relation with her father is distant. Her father represents cultural norms. A man that was always harsh towards women. She did not have a personal connection with her father. She acknowledged that she did not have anyone in relationship with her as a father. Her father did not treat her mother well as he demanded services as a king, “How to bend over the head’s man hand and pretend to kiss it, how to beat his wife and make her bite the dust…(Saʻdāwī, Ḥatātah and Cooke, 38)”. They had owner-servant relationship. She was also forced to respect him. She experienced “forced respect.” Her father claimed that boys were more important that girls, therefore, deserved more respect. She experienced “Owner-servant relationship” she had a mug in her hands that represented a voice of tradition (Hamam).

After she was sent to her uncle, she felt that education was the only thing that she was left with. She had caring teachers. At one day, Firdaus went to school playground where they cried together with Iqbal as she told her about her past experiences with her mother.  She had her happy years when she immersed her life in books and learning. She was then sent to a boarding school after his uncle married his boss’s daughter. Although her books were sold, she had a better experience at school. She gains reputation of being a bookworm as she could spend most of her time in library. According to her books were more important to her than people. Firdaus was a top performer, and she could therefore emerge as the first student in the class, simply because she worked so hard in order to be like her uncle. She therefore took her studies seriously, a thin which often made to be awarded due to her performance in class, “when I was awarded my primary school certificate he bought me a little wristwatch…(Saʻdāwī, Ḥatātah and Cooke, 46)” This was the main reason why teachers developed a good relationship with her (Saʻdāwī, Ḥatātah and Cooke). Moreover, Firdaus managed to be second best student in the school and the seventh student in the country, after the end of the year exams. She was therefore called before the parents where she was awarded. Firdaus was not only a good performer in school, but she was also determined to work very hard in order to be able to fulfill her dreams of being a doctor in future.

For Firdaus, she had a poor relationship with her husband, Sheikh Mahmoud. Her relationship with “shek mohammed” was different from that of her uncle. His uncle’s wife was a virtuous woman “duty perfect obedience” She disliked the idea of marriage, and she saw it as being cheapest from prostitution. She describes her man as ugly, violent beast and being desperate for her. She sees marriage as a waste of time as she is not paid. Marriage is terrible according to her, and when she sees that she could not handle it, she runs away. She did not have a good relationship with her husband as she was more of a servant instead of being a lover. She describes hands of her husband as “knarled with claws.” This means that she perceived him as a monstrous creature. She bases her experience on marriage with the one she experienced with Shek Mohammed. She doesn’t believe in marriage anymore, and she explains that she could not go back to it. Every man that they had connection with abused her sexually. This was the reason why she missed her father as she he did not sexualize her (Okuyade and Adekoya, 2014). After leaving her husaband, Firdaus walked through the streets with swollen eyes and a bruised face, but no one could pay attention to her. She then went to a coffee shop, since she was feeling very thirsty, she asked for water in the coffee house but the waiter sent her away, telling that the coffee house was not for pasers by. In addition, the waiter told her that the Sayeda Zeinab mausoleum was around the corner, and she could find all the water she needed.

After a short while, the waiter looked at Firdaus for a moment and asked her what had happened to her face, but she was not able to answer, “I tried to say something in reply, but the words would not come so I hid my face… (saʻdāwī, Sharīf & Miriam, 59)The waiter then walked away after which he brought her a cup full of water, but Firdaus was not able to drink it because her through was swollen. The owner of the coff-shop noticed her and asked her if anyone had hit her, and offered her hot tea. Bayoumi, who was the owner of the hotel took her into his house, where the two lived peacefuly untill she asked Bayouni to help her find a job. Bayouni slapped on the face, and then hit her on the stomach with his fist and she fell unconscious. One day she finally managed to escape from Bayoumi’s house and went running into the street where she met a woman by the name Sharifa. Sharifa told that she needed to value herself in order for men to value her. Within no time, she moved into Sharifa’s house where she started working as a prostitute.

Firdaus was forced by circumstances to become a prostitute, she had not planned to be a prostitute. Her dream was to become a doctor, since she was a top performer while in high school. She worked so hard and managed to get a secondary school certificate after the completion  of  her studies. After completing her studies, things did not go as she thought they could have gone. Her uncle married her off to an old man, who was as old as Firdaus father. Firdaus could not be able to withstand the way her was stinking. This made her to wish she was had not been married by the man (Saʻdāwī, Ḥatātah and Cooke, 58). In addition, she felt abandoned while living with her husband, since her husband was a person who woud always be negative even if Furdaus did the right thing. This therefore led to the theme of marriage and violence, whereby Firdaus was beaten by her husband making her face to swell. She therefore ran to her uncles place but she was sent back by her uncle to her husbands house.

The theme of marriage violence is therefore signficant in the deveploment of this story, since it allows us to be able to understand why Firdaus could not be able to stay with her husband for long. Most women were used to being beaten by their husband, and so they remained loyal to their husbands. Moreover, Firdaus’ mother was usually beaten by her father and she never walked out of that marriage. Firdaus could not be able to tolerate her husbands beating and so she opted to run away (Saʻdāwī, Ḥatātah and Cooke, 102). The flow of events in the novel consequently depicts Firdaus as a girl who is always in trouble, in that wherever se goes to, things turn out to be worse than she had come from. As Firdaus moves to the coffee shop, she allowed by Bayoumi to stay in his house, whereby Bayoumi treates her very and he does not even lay a finger on her. In this instance, Firdaus seems to be naïve, and she therefore starts demanding that Bayoumi helps her to get a job. Bayoumi is not impressed by Firdaus’ move and he therefore gets provoked ending up slapping her. Firdaus believes that all men are supposed to treat her well, and they are supposed to help her in whatever she wants to get. Due to naivity and hypocrisy, she belives in every person she meets.

The relationship between Bayoumi and Firdaus was so good, bearing in mind that Bayoumi took care of Firdaus after she had been badly beaten by her husband. Firdaus did not have a place to go to, and to her, Bayoumi was more like an angle. Bayoumi had allowed a total stranger into his house, after her realized that Firdaus had no parents, this therefore made him to allow her into his two roomed house (Saʻdāwī, Ḥatātah and Cooke, 103). What Firdaus was patients, she could be able to wait until she could get a good job, she therefore started pushing Bayoumi of his limits, making him to react by beating her, and even locking her in the house as he left for work. Bayoumi had a hidden agenda towards Firdaus, and what Firdaus did not understand was that Bayoumi now owned her. Firdaus could not therefore be able to make her own decisions.

Firdaus finally ran away and met Sharifa, an old woman who taught her about prostitution, the lady taught her the importance of valuing oneself. Sharifa told her that she was being beaten by other men simply because she did not respect herself. Sharifa therefore lured Firdaus into becoming a prostitute, where she enjoyed sleeping with men for money, Now she could be able to cater for her bills, she could also be able to sleep wit men who had clean finger nails, as opposed to her husband’s which were black. In addition, she enjoyed the sexual pleasure (Saʻdāwī, Ḥatātah and Cooke, 104). One day she met a man who told her that she could not be respect since she was a prostitute, this made her to feel humiliated, a move which made her to look for an ordinary job and she therefore quitted prostitution. After getting an office job, she enjoyed her work even though she earned very little money as opposed to the money she earned fro  prostitution. Firdaus therefor realized that she hated men when she met Marzouk, a man who want to marry her force. Marzouk had decided to enslave her, through taking her salary and controlling each and everything she did. He would also threaten her, a move which made her to kill him, landing Firdaus in prison.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Introduction

Twain uses the theme of Slavery and racism in the novel, in order to be able to point out the evils of the society. The society perceives slavery and racism in a very different way, thus justifying it. Twain therefore uses this theme in order to be able to speak himself out, and show how the society affected and also promoted racism and slavery. Moreover, the author also points out how the religion has also been used in order to be able to justify racism and slavery. This paper is therefore going to analyze the theme of slavery and racism, in a bid to explain how the society and the religion have affected racism and slavery.

Jim is a character who has been characterized as a slave, and is therefore running away in such of freedom. Jim is currently under the custody of her master Miss Watson, who have taken Huck in order to teach him religion and good manners, since he has been very unruly. Jim therefore looks for proper ways through which he can be able to free himself off from his master. Jim has therefore been used in order to show how slavery is being used in the novel. Each and every event that takes place in Jim’s life, consequently explains how the society perceives slaves. Huck’s dad is not impressed by Miss Watson’s actions of taking him to school, and so Pap’s warns him not to go to school or even to continue studying the religion. Huck does not put into consideration whatever he is being told, and so he decides to continue going to school despite of being warned about going to school by his father. Pap’s decides to kidnap Huck, in order to stop him from going to school and from learning about the religion. Pap’s takes Huck to a rural town across Mississippi, but Huck is not impressed by this move. Due to the severe punishments and beatings that he receives from Pap’s, Huck decides to fake his own death in order to escape. While escaping, he stumbles upon Jim at and they therefore decides to support him in escaping. Even though Huck knows that he is going against the dictates of the religion, he decides to run away with Jim. According to the religion, slavery was not bad, and God had approved that slavery was not a bad thing, ''…God approved it, that it was a holy thing, and that the doubter need only look in the Bible if he wished to settle his mind and then the texts were read aloud to us to make the matter sure; if the slaves themselves had an aversion to slavery, they were wise and said nothing (Ibbotson, 2014)''

This consequently explains how the religion supported slavery, as preachers would always preach such summons in the church in order to justify slavery. In addition, the religion changed the society’s view on racism and slavery, thus making the society to believe that slavery is actually good and it should be undertaken. Jim therefore suffers as a slave, and his master, Miss Watson, knows that she is doing the right thing by having a slave in his house, who works under her. Each and every one therefore believes that the slavery is good since the bible approves it. When they finally escape and board a raft where the King and Duke pretend to be brother in order to rob a house, the real brothers appear and this forces the king and the Duke to escape. The King and Duke therefore escape together with Jim and Huck. When the Duke and the King run out of money, they therefore decide to sell Jim as a slave. This consequently shows how black people are perceived by the society, a thing which makes the Duke and the King to sell him as a commodity and not a human being. Moreover, this also explains how the society had accepted slavery in such a way that if anyone ran out of money, he could use a slave for personal gains. Jim was therefore sold and he felt as if he was being used, “I was sorry to hear Jim say that, it was such a lowering of him. My conscience got to stirring me up... (Ibbotson, 2014)”. At this point Jim realized that he was not being treated as a human being, but he was being used as a means of earning money.

Conclusion

The theme Racism and Slavery has therefore been clearly explained in the story, through the use of Jim, who is a slave, the author has been able to point out how the society supports slavery. In addition, the religion, through the use of the bible, has also been used in order to approve slavery. Most people therefore believe that slavery and racism are legal simply because both the society and the religion accept it. In addition, anybody can be able to sell a slave at any time he or she feels like, since slaves cannot be compared to other people. Slaves are therefore perceived as assets, whereby one can be able to own them guaranteed he or she has money.

Sonny Blues by James Baldwin

Theme: Suffering

In most  instances  reading a story  may  be a tiring  task   based  on the  inability  to  understand  the  message  that  the  author  attempts  to  deliver.  However, non literary texts helps the readers in gaining a better way of understanding concepts based on their easiness to understand and descriptive details provided. The article  by Singer Paul  that  is titled ‘’Should  this  be the  last Generation?’’ addresses  the  theme  of suffering.  After  reading the  article  my  ability  to understand  suffering  as depicted  by  Baldwin in Sonny  blues  was  increased.  In that  I was  able  to  connect  the  depiction  of suffering  from the  story  and  as   demonstrated by the  article  in a descriptive  way. The central base of sonny blues is based on the theme   of suffering.  Throughout the  story  Baldwin  makes  the emphasizes  that  suffering  can be classified as a universal  thing  that  normally  seem to  lead  to  increased  suffering.  The  effects  of  suffering  are  clearly  demonstrated  by Baldwin on several  and  distinct  life scales (Gale 3).  He  achieves  this  through  showing  the manner  in  which  suffering impacts  the life  of an individual,  the manner I which  it impacts  a general  family   from a single  generation  to  another   and how the  society  is impacted  generally (Gale 3). The reading  of the article  and the  story  impacted by  understanding  of the  theme  of suffering  by creating a thought that suffering is everywhere as it  is unending  and affects  individuals families and the society at large. Suffering is a repeat that is acquired from the previous generation which is passed to the next.

According to Singer (1) suffering is a life’s standard that is experienced by most persons if not all in the world due to the absence or presence of certain things.  Singer adds  that most individuals worry  of  reproducing  to  bring a child  to  the unending suffering  that  runs a generation after  the other (Singer 1). Suffering   has the  tendency  of creating more  suffering  as  when a certain  challenge  is overcome  fresh  desires  will pop  thus leading  to additional  struggle and the  cycle  is then bound to  be repetitive. Baldwin  makes a  story  that  was  developed  in the 1950s Harlem, a neighborhood  in New York  that  was  the  central point  for the  urban  black  lives.  This demonstrates the difficulties that await the young men in American society.  This  is  demonstrated through the  reflection  of the narrator  on the  negative  future  that  is faced  by the  students.  Despite the  strong desires  that  the  victims  holds  on  attaining higher  possibilities  they  are  forced  to compromise  with  what  they are   subjected to.  The   narrator  and  sonny are  faced  with  the  challenge of  leaving the  neighborhood  despite their increasing  desire  to  do  so.  In this  case  Baldwin  shows  suffering  to  be the  central element  that  characterizes  the  experience of  African Americans  by  portraying Harlem as  the trap  that  subjects  them to  challenges.  In that  the place  is full   of  suffering  and  violence  and  based  on the  racism  and trauma experienced  by residents  it  is impossible  of  getting  an escape (Gale 1).

Throughout the  whole  story, Baldwin,  reveals the  parallel  suffering that  occurs  in the lives of different  characters  by  affecting  them, their families  and the  society. Suffering occurs in any location thus forcing the affected persons to fight (Gale 2).  The parallel  suffering of persons  revealed  in the   story  makes an emphasizes  of the  repeats  that  exists  amid  the  suffering  from the  generation that  was  before  and the present suffering.  For instance,  the  father  of the story’s narrator  anguish  because  he watched his brother  as  he  died  without offering any  help.  This  reflects the  guilt  and  the  sorrow that  the  narrator  has  about  his  personal failure  to assist  Sonny who was  suffering  from addiction.  This creates a pessimistic perception about the generation that will follow in the family.  Despite the  fact  that  the narrator has managed  to  become a school teacher  he  is not  able  to  generate  better  chances  for his  own children. The family  lives  in a rundown  project  housing  and  based  on the  suffering  his daughter  had even  died  in much agony  due  to polio (Gale 4). He  feels and shows  his  worries  as he fears that  his sons  such as  Sonny  are  likely  to get  into drugs  since they are  being offered  in the open  in the neighborhoods  street.  This therefore makes the stronger suggestion that suffering is passed from a generation to another.

Singer made it easier to understand why some issues from the previous generations will never end.  This is simply because the some occurrence happens and their parents pass the tendency to the children and so forth.  Sonny  Blues additionally  makes the exploration  of the ways in which  the suffering  of  persons  destroys lives  and especially  because  of the lack or the  incapability  of persons to  communicate  about  their anguish (Clark 35). In that Baldwin demonstrates  on how the personal suffering  changes  and  makes  individuals  bitter , destroys relations and  also leads  the affected persons  to death,  addiction or prolonged  illnesses.  This is  directly  demonstrated  via the  narrator  who in the  first  place  seems  to  be existing  more better  as  compared to Sonny.  However,  as the  story  moves the readers  starts  to understand the degree  of the anger  held by the  narrator, fear as well as bitterness.  He appears  to  be  obsesses  with the tendency of avoiding  the  anguish that  has plagued the  family and the  community  but this  obsession  means that  he  is trapped  in a suffering  that  transforms  him  to misery. On the other  hand Sonny  has the  ability  of speaking in regard  to  how  he  suffers  but the  narrator is  overwhelmed by the  whole  suffering and this  leads him to  addiction, legal issues  and  separation from the brother  in his quest to escape (Clark 35).

In Baldwin’s perspective there  is no easy  way  of escaping  such  suffering  but  he  makes  and insight  the  burden that  is  created  by the  suffering cycles  that are repetitive from a generation  to another  can be  reduced (Clark 35).  The epiphany of the story’s narrator  at the  club is a demonstration of the  significance  of  expressing  suffering  so that  control  over  it can be taken. In addition  the  friendship  of Sonny  with  the Jazz  musicians  is a demonstration  of how relief can be  obtained through a community (Gale 4).

In conclusion, from reading the article it become apparent that suffering is passed from a generation since it is universal.  The repetitive nature of suffering occurs based on the inability of persons or families to communicate which translates to a societal issue.  From Sonny Blues the family suffers for the inner storage of issues that can be discussed to lessen the burden of the coming generation.

‘The Death of Horatio Alger’ Paul krugman

The main issue which Krugman is talking about is the issue of inequality in income distribution.  The latter is a major problem in U.S and it has created a gap between high-income and low-class income. American has changed from a democratic society to a class-ridden society where poor people remain poor despite their effort to free from poverty (Krugman, 387). Social mobility has declined and there a drastic increase of inequality in income distribution.  This issue is relevant in that it reveals the need to address the issue of income distribution between poor and wealth poor because if there are no solution, then there will be “a class of rentiers in the U.S” (Krugman, 387). The latter means that untalented children from wealth families will acess a great share of the assets while talented children from poor families will not have the opportunity to access American wealth. Inequality has spoiled the community and has led to social division which has contributed to social cohesion in the community. To address this issue, the author should consider the Piketty’s idea on wealth tax or progressive taxation. This means that upper income taxpayers should pay high income tax and this technique will lower the income, benefit the middle class, increase tax revenue and expand economic growth (Piketty, Thomas & Goldhammer, 492).

Globalization: The Super-Story

Friedman introduces the problems with globalization in world today. The author compares the state of globalization before the Cold war and globalization in world today. Before the cold war, nations were divided and were independent. In contrast, globalization in modern world is integrated and nations are connected with internet. There was a balance of power from two superpowers before the Cold war but in modern world there is “super-empowered individuals” (Friedman, 391).  The latter is the major factor which brings problems to the globalization. The super-empowered individuals have the dominance and shows bias in distribution of wealth. The problem with modern globalization is that it does not benefit all people and has changed the political economy. It has affected intellectual property, health, civil society and more. To address this issue, the author might consider the establishment of global programs as they are effective in implementing global collective action (Friedman, 391).

Both essays have similar values in addressing wealth inequality. Krugman focus on issue of inequality in wealth distribution which is socially constructed.  Friedman asserts that globalization’s position in modern world differs from that of Cold war periods. Both authors assert that American is controlled by super-empowered individuals and they have used their power to change America. From the essays, the theme of capitalism is apparent. This is a new social system which creates a class division, a profit motive and social inequality.

Living in the  society  where  English  is the  primary  language  this raises  the  need for  native  speakers  to learn  English as their  second language  for  easier  communication which occurs  in the  non- native  community (Prahl, 2001).  Learners  and educators  plays a critical role  in the  success  of the  programs  since  commitment  is required  from both  parties.  English as a second language is the utilization of English by persons or speakers with distinct native languages. English second language  is a traditional  phrase  that  is utilized  to refer  to the study of  English as the secondary  language  by the non native speakers. The genre is a main branch of applied linguistics which can also be accounted as an interdisciplinary field (Prahl, 2001).

ESL has  four different  learning  categories  which are  proficiencies, communicative  competence, multiple  illiteracies  and  cross cultural knowledge (Prahl, 2001).  ESL genre  is an attempt to depict  the  need  and the  desire  for the non native speakers  to fit  into the  society  through  learning  how  to communicate with the primary  language.  In addition, the  programs helps  in creation of  more  knowledge  that  is essential  for the  growth  of  relations  amid the native and non-native  persons in the  society.  The genre represents the importance of language in any form of communication (Prahl, 2001).

The Carter House Franklin

The trip to The Carter House Franklin TN, was going to be enjoyable, and so I decided to prepare early enough. I prepared for the trip first and foremost by doing a lot of research about the House (Smith et al, 2016). The research was about the house, what one is expect to carry and what one is not allowed to have while entering into the house, this allowed me to be able to have an insight of the house. Secondly, I wrote to the Carter house Franklin Tennessee, requesting permission to be allowed to take a sight viewing at the place. This was the step whereby I decided to clearly stipulate the reasons as to why I had decided to visit the house (Woodworth & Grear, 2016). Thirdly, I carried each and everything that I needed for the trip, these things included drinking water, a pen, a book, a camera for taking photographs and backpack together with heavy clothes in case of the rains (Johnston, 2014).

The Carter House is a historic house which was constructed by Fountain Branch Carter in the year 1830 (Smith et al, 2016). The house was built out of bricks, and it consisted of a sitting room, and bedrooms. The house was designed in a straight manner, in such a way that it was not in any way curved. Moreover, it was accompanied by other buildings which included a kitchen, farm office and a smoke house. The house was built in a fairly large area of land, allowing the place to have a very huge compound (Woodworth & Grear, 2016). The main purpose of building the house was to provide a hiding place for the Carter family. The house had a basement, which was used by Carters family as they waited for the end of the second Battle of Franklin.

The carter house is a state Historic site in Tennessee, and is under the management of non-profit property organization and the flagship of the Franklin Battlefield, which is a National Historic Commission in the US. On the other hand, in the 1850’s Carter decided to build a cotton gin which later became a much-remembered landmark in the course of the second Battle of Franklin in the year 1864 (Woodworth & Grear, 2016). Even though the cotton gin is not existent, the house and the other three buildings are existent. The houses are therefore used to illustrate the horrors of the Civil war battles whereby it has more than one thousand bullet holes which are still visible (Smith et al, 2016).

The three houses, which bear more than one thousand bullet holes make the house historic (Johnston, 2014). This is consequently because, the house contains more stories particularly when one reads about what happened to the house, which made it to be shot for more than one thousand times (Smith et al, 2016). The house played a very major role in the second world Battle of Franklin, and before the fight the house was a headquarter of the Twenty-Third Army Corps, which was under the command of Brigadier General Jacob D. Cox (Woodworth & Grear, 2016). The house therefore carries very many ancient stories of the Second Battle of Franklin, and thus making it to be more than just a mere house, but a historic site. In addition, the house is used to show the effect and the magnitude of the war. Moreover, the house also explains how Carter lived with his family, and how he used the house in order to avoid being affected, or otherwise his family from being wounded (Johnston, 2014).

The house was built in such a way that it makes it impossible for the enemy to be able to understand where a person is hiding in the house (Smith et al, 2016). This really impressed me, since it shows how smart Carter was, as he did one of the unique things while constructing the house, thus making it hard for an attacker to be able to hurt his family during the war (Woodworth & Grear, 2016). Furthermore, the three outstanding building in the compound, were used to confuse the enemy, thus making it hard for them to be able to understand the specific place where his family could have hidden. In addition, the house looked as if it had no basement, a thing which was also use to confuse the enemies, since they could only shoot at the top part of the house, thus forgetting about the basement. I was surprised by what I learnt, since I could not imagine how a person could be smart enough and come up with a plan of constructing a house which is very unique.

I would recommend a friend to visit the house, in order to be able to clearly see the effect of the Second Battle of Franklin (Smith et al, 2016). Moreover, through visiting the house, one can understand the way the Franklin planned and executed the war, and how he was ready to make sure that his family was not affected by the war. The site should be preserved for future generations, in order to make sure they get to see and understand how the Second Battle of Franklin was (Woodworth & Grear, 2016).
