Familiarize yourself with different Critical Approaches to literature. For this essay, you must choose one critical approach and apply it to one of the assigned pieces of short fiction--either a short story or a one-act play.

If I were to write this essay on the movie Lion King, the first thing I would do is consider a critical approach that I have a firm understanding of. I could consider Feminist Criticism and questions regarding the female characters in the movie. Because the movie features very few female characters, a working thesis for this essay could be: In The Lion King, female characters are virtually nonexistent, which contributes patriarchal norms. I could also consider Marxist Criticism and questions regarding the social classes in the movie. Because the movie features a royal family, a working thesis for this essay could be: In The Lion King, plot revolves around characters with the highest social standing, confirming that anyone not in the same class is inferior.
In addition, you will need to conduct scholarly research. You must use the Golden West College Library Databases to find scholarly articles on literature that you can use to support your claims. The articles do not have to be on the specific work that you are writing on, but it should correspond with the critical approach you choose. For example, if I were writing a Feminist Criticism of The Lion King, I wouldn't have to search solely for "feminism and Lion King." I could search for "feminism" and any other work that had few female characters like Hamlet. I could then apply the ideas from that article to the work that I am writing on.
All research must be done on the Golden West College Library Databases. I recommend Literature Resource Center and Project Muse.

Write a 1000- to 1500-word rhetorical analysis in which you examine the work for the three rhetorical devices: logos, pathos, and ethos and discuss how the author uses rhetorical devices to achieve each of the three devices. 4. Avoid using quotes unless they are absolutely necessary. Paraphrase and/or summarize instead. Excessive quotes can make body paragraphs dry and boring. 7. The essay MUST be presented in proper MLA format, with in-text citations included for each quote, and a properly-formatted Works Cited page.
8. DO NOT write this essay using first- or second-person. It must be written entirely in third-person. 9. Never refer to the author of your article by his/her first name only. Refer to the author by first and last name in the introductory paragraph. After that, refer to him/her by last name only.

Analysis – Application Essay
Geoffrey Colvin’s article “What it takes to be great” is about how “success” or “talent” is really the outcome of hard work, tremendous practice, and mental approach, and not because of innate intelligence or natural talent. This applies to sports, school, business, and the arts.
