Familiarize yourself with different Critical Approaches to literature.  For this essay, you must choose one critical approach and apply it to one of the assigned pieces of short fiction--either a short story or a one-act play.

If I were to write this essay on the movie Lion King, the first thing I would do is consider a critical approach that I have a firm understanding of.  I could consider Feminist Criticism and questions regarding the female characters in the movie.  Because the movie features very few female characters, a working thesis for this essay could be: In The Lion King, female characters are virtually nonexistent, which contributes patriarchal norms.  I could also consider Marxist Criticism and questions regarding the social classes in the movie.  Because the movie features a royal family, a working thesis for this essay could be: In The Lion King, plot revolves around characters with the highest social standing, confirming that anyone not in the same class is inferior.

In addition, you will need to conduct scholarly research.  You must use the Golden West College Library Databases to find scholarly articles on literature that you can use to support your claims.  The articles do not have to be on the specific work that you are writing on, but it should correspond with the critical approach you choose.  For example, if I were writing a Feminist Criticism of The Lion King, I wouldn't have to search solely for "feminism and Lion King."  I could search for "feminism" and any other work that had few female characters like Hamlet.  I could then apply the ideas from that article to the work that I am writing on.

All research must be done on the Golden West College Library Databases.  I recommend Literature Resource Center and Project Muse.

This essay is an academic analysis of a text.  THIS ESSAY IS NOT A SUMMARY ASSIGNMENT.  The majority of your essay will be your critical analysis of the text.  While some summary is necessary to give context, assume that your reader (me) has read the work (I have).

Requirements

Essay must focus on one short story or one-act play.
Essay must be composed in the third person.
Essay must include a definitive thesis statement.
Essay must be in MLA format.
Essay must include 2–4 appropriate scholarly sources from the GWC Library Databases.
Essay must introduce, integrate, and explain relevant quotes with proper MLA style in-text citations.
Essay must include a MLA style works cited.
Essay must have a minimum 1,500 words; word count includes everything after the title until the work cited.

3. Write a 1000- to 1500-word rhetorical analysis in which you examine the work for the three rhetorical devices: logos, pathos, and ethos and discuss how the author uses rhetorical devices to achieve each of the three devices.
   4. The essay must include a strong introductory paragraph that ends with the thesis as well as a concluding paragraph that restates the thesis without using exact words.
   5. Each body paragraph should contain a topic sentence that relates to the thesis and identifies the rhetorical strategy being analyzed, two documented pieces of strong textual evidence, thorough explanations of the author’s likely purpose for each quote, and a concluding sentence that give the paragraph a finished feel. A suggested structure is as follows:
   Paragraph 1: Introduction—Introduce the work and end with your thesis.
   Paragraph 2: Logos—Provide two quotes that exemplify logos. For each, explain the rhetorical devices the author employs to educate his/her audience.
   Paragraph 3: Pathos—Provide two quotes that exemplify pathos. For each, explain the rhetorical devices the author employs to appeal to his audience’s emotions.
   Paragraph 4: Ethos—Provide two quotes that exemplify ethos. For each, explain the rhetorical devices the author employs to establish his credibility with the audience.
   Paragraph 5: Conclusion—Examine the work’s effectiveness.
   6. Avoid using quotes unless they are absolutely necessary. Paraphrase and/or
   summarize instead. Excessive quotes can make body paragraphs dry and
   boring.
   7. The essay MUST be presented in proper MLA format, with in-text citations
   included for each quote, and a properly-formatted Works Cited page.
       
   8. DO NOT write this essay using first- or second-person. It must be written entirely in third-person.
   9. Never refer to the author of your article by his/her first name only. Refer to the author by first and last name in the introductory paragraph. After that, refer to him/her by last name only.

Geoffrey Colvin’s article “What it takes to be great” is about how “success” or “talent” is really the outcome of hard work, tremendous practice, and mental approach, and not because of innate intelligence or natural talent.  This applies to sports, school, business, and the arts. In a well-developed essay, citing specific examples from the text, discuss 1) what steps Colvin suggests (or implies) we should take, and 2) explain one or two real-life, detailed examples that show how you have, or have not, applied this principle of hard-work-equals-success.

Please note: I’m looking for you to explain Colvin’s argument. What is specific to Colvin’s point? Colvin mentions specific keys to success (“deliberate practice,” adopting a new mind-set, etc.).  Your discussion of Colvin needs to be specific to his principles, not a general hard work equals success philosophy. Consider what Colvin tells his reader that is different than what you’ve heard before.
