READ the article, “Teaching Who Killed Vincent Chin?” which features 6 student responses to the film.

ANSWER:

Who is Vincent Chin?
Why is this case significant ~ still, 35 years later?

NOTE the following points about the model minority from our upcoming readings and how they relate to both WHO KILLED VINCENT CHIN? as well as BETTER LUCK TOMORROW:

The notion of model minority emerged in the 1960s, during the rise of the Civil Rights Movement which was led by African American citizens.
This construction of the model minority was based on the political silence of Asian America, and “had less to do with the actual success of Asian Americans than to the perceived failure of African Americans to assimilate.”
In other words, the ideological function of the model minority myth is to “compliment” Asian Americans at the expense of Black Americans, to encourage their political silence as “model” rather than resisting discrimination or fighting for civil rights or defying one’s expected position in the social-racial hierarchy.

Instructions: Aaron Douglas’s style -is the result of a deep-rooted belief that in trying to imitate the actual world, art-as-likeness was really falsifying the way we see that world.” Although all art is a form of imitation—whether of the actual or the imaginary world—Douglas’s belief highlights the way artists have used conflicting methods of getting to the “truth” of the world. Choose one image from early “realistic” methods of artistic representation and one image from later “art of alteration” and analyze the following: What kind of truth does each work try to achieve? What methods is each artist using to create this kind of truth? How do these methods differ from each other? Then, focusing on one of the works you analyzed, discuss how its method of getting to truth compares with the method by which the modern American novel (discussed in chapter 4) tries to get to its truth.  Review “Renaissance Art” and “Art as Alteration” (chapter 5); “The Modern American Novel” (chapter 4).

Please note: The full length of written content MUST be three pages long, not including any author information (such as written in the upper right by MLA style)

Description:

Your 6 page term paper is due at the end of Week 7.  Visit the APUS online library, look at the course guides and optionally use the "Ask the Librarian" resource to help you locate scholarly references. They have electronic rights to JSTOR, which is a journal storage database and other data bases.

Choose one artist or architect that is included in any week of our course lessons, readings, or other areas. In this essay, fully discuss the artist and two art samples. Your paper should include:

2 page biography of the artist/architect.
A description, formal analysis, and interpretation of 2 works of art/architecture by that artist (2 pages each).

It is best to choose an artist we have studied in the class, but it doesn't have to be. Do not include any artwork that you have already written about in class.  Each analysis should be 2 pages in length and cannot be a work of art we have discussed in Forums.  The analysis portion of this assignment must follow the Writing a Critique format you used for your Museum Paper. Be sure to also follow the suggestions in the Basic Mechanics for Writing About Art. Be sure to describe your artwork fully from background to foreground!

Here is a summary of what you will submit:

A 2 page biography of your artist
A 2 page description, formal analysis, and interpretation of the first work of art
A 2 page description, formal analysis, and interpretation for the second work of art
In a conclusion, tell me why you chose this artist

DO NOT FORGET: Use your Writing a Critique Art Notes that is in your Week 1 Lesson for the analysis and description and interpretation.  Use the Required Reading Videos and Resources in Lesson Two to help you with this paper and the Museum Paper.  This is a formal research paper, written in the third person, but please end with why you chose this artist.

Wikipedia note: It is an unjuried source, meaning that anyone can post there, even those who know nothing about the subject. AMU/APUS has a great library for source material. Start there.

Paper Instructions:

For this assignment, students will trace the “afterlife” of Leonardo da Vinci’s masterwork, The Last Supper, by investigating a later (modern or contemporary period) work of art that reinterprets the original painting. In analyzing, comparing, and contrasting the form and content of the Renaissance original and the image that refers back to it, you will need to consider WHY as well as HOW the later artist chose to appropriate and rethink the original. What did they see there that compelled their own investigation? And finally, what do you see in The Last Supper that continues to speak to viewers across time and space, across the centuries?
Your PRIMARY FOCUS should be LOOKING & THINKING CRITICALLY about the two works of art in relation to each other & the time periods in which they were created. Primary sources should be the works of art themselves and relevant ideas in class and in the text, not outside research; i.e., this is a primarily a reflective rather than research project.  However, if you use outside sources you MUST CITE THEM CORRECTLY both within the body of the text and in a works cited page using the CHICAGO STYLE.

CHOOSE 1 OF THESE ARTWORKS TO COMPARE TO THE ORIGINAL:
Suggested modern/contemporary works of art reinterpreting da Vinci’s Last Supper:
Last Supper of the Desert in Red    MF Husain 2008
Last Supper                                        Marisol 1982

Last Supper of the Empty Plates, Last Supper    Abdulsalam Haykal  nd
Last Supper                                        Faisal Abdu’Allah  1995    (multiple versions)
60 Last Suppers                                Andy Warhol (+ other versions)
Some Living American Women Artists: Last Supper    Mary Beth Edelson  1972

There are two great short films by TAD NAKAMURA (a UCSC alum!) that are part of his early trilogy and which I think you will like:  PILGRIMAGE (2006) and YELLOW BROTHERHOOD (2003). The films are significant in terms of both their form as well as marking a next-generation of independent Asian American filmmaking.

Please take notes on: the use of music, the relationship between director and subject, how particular stories relevant to Asian Americans are opened up for a wider viewership. A) In what ways are Tad Nakamura’s films social documentaries? B) How is the cinematic technique of collage employed
