Unit 8 - Media Analysis Assignment

Purpose/Objective:

To have students use a mass communication theory in their analysis of children’s television programming and to promote media literacy habits.

Instructions:

View 5 to 10 minute clips of children’s programs on TV (you should view at least 3 separate programs). This should range from cartoons to “Sesame Street-type” programs with humans. As you watch the programs pay close attention to the television advertisements that are broadcast on Saturday mornings during the cartoons or during the afternoon hours.

After watching the programs and commercials create a well-developed PowerPoint presentation discussing the follow questions, focused on both the programming and the commercials:

Programming:

What themes, values, stereotypes, and cultural messages did you notice in the children’s programs?
Are there differences and similarities among the programs?
Are these messages part of the mainstreaming process?
Do you think the message of these programs resonate with young viewers?
Commercials:

After viewing the commercials did you see any examples of puffery, hooks, or similar devices in the persuasive messages of the advertisements?

Task:

Create a PowerPoint presentation over this topic.  The presentation should include at least 8-10 slides and should focus on the relationship between your examples and the theories and concepts presented in the textbook.

You should discuss, in detail, your personal responses to the examples you viewed and then use at least 1 theory or concept from the textbook to explain the mass communication problems, issues, or theories associated with the programs you viewed.

Grading:

Your final PowerPoint presentation will be scored based on the following categories:

Quality of information (40 points)  – The material is clear and understandable.  The information discussed is related to main concepts and theories discussed in our textbook.  Supporting details are included and examples are clearly connected to class material.
Organization (20 points) – The information is well organized in a logical way.  The information is easy to understand and focused throughout the entire presentation.
Background and Text (20 points) – The background and text complement each other and slides are free of grammatical and structural errors.

Questions We Can Help You To Answer

Paper instructions:

Write an essay about a job or work experience that taught you something significant about the world of work, particularly

--the challenge of doing difficult and/or tedious labor,

--the challenges or indignities of dealing with other people (customers, co-workers, or bosses)

--the challenges of working long hours for insufficient pay.

--the difficulties or impossibility of advancement in that particular job or company

--the likelihood or unlikelihood that you could work this job indefinitely, or as a career

--the way in which you see this job reflecting the current American workplace as discussed in the assigned reading.

Since you can't write about everything, narrow your focus to one job or one kind of job and the most important thing you have learned from it.

At the same time, look at your experience from a larger perspective.  How does your work experience relate to the wide landscape of American employment today?  Are you one of many or a lucky or unlucky exception?

Most important, give examples and details to illustrate your points.

Job Application Letter or Graduate School Statement of Purpose
This assignment asks you to link your work in IAS to your career goals by finding a job or graduate school program to which you could imagine applying, selecting a few work samples appropriate to that position, and writing a 300-600 word application letter (or personal statement).  Copy the actual job language & qualifications from the ad (or prompt from the grad school letter) after your letter. This is necessary so reviewers can evaluate whether you've actually spoken to their requirements.
Be sure you make evidence-based claims about what you’re capable of doing.  The letter, in other words, should discuss your work in IAS (or elsewhere) as evidence for your abilities.  Don’t just say: “I’m a skilled leader in teamwork situations”; instead, say “My work in (insert course or position) shows I have leadership skills because I’ve done  (insert details).”

Questions We Can Help You To Answer

Paper instructions:

Writing letters to public officials and organizations is a common form of political action for both clients and social workers. By telling their personal stories, clients are able to put a “face” on a problem (President Obama, during his candidacy and as President, for example, has often referred to “the lady he met in Iowa who has gone bankrupt due to medical bills.”). Social workers and other professionals attempt to influence policy by not only telling their clients’ stories but also by adding “facts and figures” about the problem or issue.
16
Choose a social welfare issue discussed in class. It can be a new one or the one you chose for your social problem. Prepare a letter to an elected official regarding your chosen social welfare issue. You are not required to actually send the letter; however it must demonstrate the appropriate format and content. In the letter, explain how you want the legislator to vote on the position and why. It can relate to the social policy you have analyzed if this is appropriate as well.
Opinions carry more weight when they are backed up by credible facts so you will have to do a little research in order to make your point. This letter should be no more than one page, single spaced.
To be taken seriously advocacy letters to the media and elected officials must be well-organized and written with excellent grammar and spelling. Please attach a reference list for any materials you used in this assignment.
