Questions we Can Help you to Answer

Paper Instructions:

For this paper, I would like you to collect data about and reflect upon your own social media use, what science tells us about its implications on your psychological or social self, and what changes you should consider implementing. You can determine which form(s) of data collection you will use. The following are some examples (which are by no means exhaustive):

- Write in a diary nightly or ask a friend to interview you about your social media use.
- Set your timer to go off throughout the day and make notes about what you were doing and how you felt at that moment.
- Use a time tracking application (e.g., Web Timer, RescueTime) to generate data about your website and app use patterns.
- Collect all your social media posts and assess them systematically (e.g., using language analysis software such as LIWC: http://www.liwc.net/tryonline.php

No matter what form(s) of data collection you use, you need to collect data across several days in some systematic way and keep records. You will also need to describe your method in your paper.

Then, review your dataset and determine one or two activities or processes you engage in that you think might be hurtful or helpful (e.g., checking social media sites while studying, “liking” instead of “commenting” on friends’ posts, reading the title and snippet of news articles stead of the full articles, having location service on all the time, to name a few). Find and read research about those particular activities or mental states and their relationship to psychological or social processes. To do a good job, I would expect a bibliography of at least 5 sources, at least 3 of which are academic research papers (e.g., journal article, conference proceeding article, or academic book).

A good starting point for your research is well-researched Wikipedia entries or popular press articles, like this piece
https://techcrunch.com/2017/12/14/active-vs-passive-social-media/?ncid=mobilerecirc_featured
and this blog
post https://newsroom.fb.com/news/2017/12/hard-questions-is-spending-time-on-social-media-bad-for-us/

But note that these pieces are not considered academic papers themselves. Instead, they provide pointers to academic papers for further research. I also recommend Google Scholar as a search engine for research papers.

For each of your activities/processes, explain what the research suggests might be an outcome of (or correlated with) your behaviors. Keep in mind the research could suggest that a particular activity or orientation is helpful or hurtful. If it’s helpful, you will want to do more of it. If it’s hurtful, you will want to do less of it. I am asking you to go beyond surface-level popular press Utopian or Dystopian pronouncements and to engage with the empirical literature in a nuanced way.

Finally, develop a plan that would maximize your positive and minimize your negative outcomes. I am not asking you to commit to actually doing any of these things, but you need to show me that you understand the research, so be specific as possible. For instance, “I will make an effort to write more comments on Facebook, especially for my strong ties” is better than “I will use Facebook less.” You need to provide support for the changes you are proposing.

Paper Instructions:

Wireless Internet access is quickly gaining popularity among people seeking highspeed internet connections when they are away from their home or office. The signal from a typical wireless access point extends only about 300 feet in any direction, so the user must find a hotspot to be able to access the Internet while on the road. Sometimes hotspots are available for free or for a small fee. You work for a sales company, SalesTek, which has a sales force of 25 representatives and customers concentrated in Denver, Colorado; Salt Lake City, Utah and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Your sales representatives are constantly on the road and they require 24/7 Internet access.
Focus:
You have been asked to find hotspots for your colleagues to connect while they are on the road. It is critical that your sales force can access the Internet 24/7 to connect with customers, suppliers, and the corporate office. Create a document detailing how your mobile workforce will be able to stay connected to the Internet while traveling. Here are a few tips to get you started;
•    Use websites such as www.wifinder.com and www.jiwire.com to determine which commercial hotspots would be the most appropriate for your sales force and the commercial network service that these hotspots use.
•    Search the websites of two or three commercial networks that seem most appropriate to discover more about pricing and services. (Hint: T-Mobile is one example.)
•    Use www.wifinder.com and www.wififreespot.com to determine how many free public hotspots are available in these cities. Are there enough for your company to rely on them or should you use a commercial Wi-Fi system. If so, which one?
•    You might also research www.fon.com to see alternative methods of using home broadband connections.

Paper Instructions:

Critically analyze the development from a broadcast culture to today’s so-called ‘participatory culture’. Focusing on key media and communications technologies, identify the factors that gave rise to the introduction and diffusion of these innovations, as well as the impact that these technologies have had on society. Rather than discussing broadcast culture in isolation from participatory culture, try to identify continuities and similarities between these two epochs, while still acknowledging the distinctions.

You must use at least six scholarly references. These can be sourced from the readings from Weeks 05, 06, 07, and 08 (choose at least one of these readings), as well as through the Swinburne library to support your discussion. Note that encyclopaedia entries (Wikipedia, Encyclopedia Britannica etc.) do not count as scholarly texts and should not be used in assessments (the only time you would use and cite Wikipedia, for example, is if your essay topic is actually about these kinds of websites and their uses).

Critical analysis is an evaluation of the arguments being made in scholarly texts. It involves forming a critical opinion (your own argument), which is created through examining all sides of various arguments, through reflecting on issues in the scholarly texts in a thoughtful, clear and well-balanced manner. This involves making a reasoned judgment of arguments being made, by identifying both false and/or biased assumptions, and credible and convincing arguments, based on evidence. So your own argument can agree with and/or challenge the arguments being made in the scholarly texts. You will support your own argument through bringing in examples other than those being made in the scholarly texts.

As an IT managements company's procurement manager I saw a lot of unethical acts in management from disappearing servers to the management team asking me to turn the other way, as servers were purchased with lesser quality parts than were expected or referred to as generic white box intel servers being passed on as high end servers. The biggest concern I had with the company was when they acquired a competitor and as they were trying to cut costs they cut employees. One of these employees was the Logistics manager. They combined my duties as purchaser with the duties of shipping and receiving manager which gave one individual (me) access and liability to all.  There was two keys available to the closet that held hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of computer equipment with no way of verifying who took what to which customer. I implemented a checkout list of the key that I had, but the system was still flawed since the CFO still had a copy of the key. The company later was acquired by C7 Data Centers which I am no longer a part of.
