The Movie Fracture

Fracture is a movie about a murder mystery. Ted Crawford is arrested for attempting to kill his wife due to her infidelity behavior with Robert Nunnally (lieutenant detective).  Police officers, including Robert Nunally, arrives at the scene and addresses the issue.  Crawford is taken to the court, and  the  deputy public attorney Willy Beachum, who  is about to leave the job and work for Wooten-Sims private law firm as a private attorney,  handles Crawford's case (Malok, 2017).  Beachum reviews the case and gives the defendant right to counsel and rejects further preliminary hearing.  Beachum perceives the case as a winning case and believes that Crawford will become a winner. This is a moral failure since the public attorney is greedy.  He breaks the law with his selfish plans and fails to secure justice for the victim (Malok, 2017). The attorney claims that Crawford was under duress or in other words, he was forced by the lieutenant to accept that he committed the offense. For this reason, the defendant's confession is perceived as under duress and thus, it cannot be viewed as evidence.

In the movie, there is a lack of integrity and honesty. Note that attorneys should maintain honesty and integrity in the legal profession. However, the attorney dismissed a case and puts his administrative assistance into an ethical paradox for selfish gain.  Nunally violates the legal ethics by presenting false testimony that Jennifer is his wife (Malok, 2017).  He looks for revenge and he also wants to prove that Crawford is guilty.  These examples relate to the fifth constitutional amendments. This amendment is applicable to the case since the public attorney violates the procedural due process by failing to follow fair procedures. Under the Fifth Amendment, the attorney is subject to civil liability by violating the substantive due process that would protect the legal procedures and rights (Rutledge, 2019).  For example, the attorney uses interrogation practices by asking his administrative assistant unjust moral questions to ‘shock the conscience'. The attorney also violates the grand jury under the Fifth Amendment (Rutledge, 2019). Police presented the matter as well as adequate evidence to prove that Crawford is guilt, but   the attorney who is highly paid dismisses the case.

In the film, the police violate Crawford's constitutional rights by entering into his house to search and collect the gun. The Fourth Amendment can apply in this situation to benefit the suspect/criminal. According to the amendment, citizens are protected from unlawful searches and seizures (Obasogie & Newman, 2019). The constitutional rights would benefit the suspect since he would be under a high degree of protection.  If the police would comply with this law, they could not have entered into his house to search for evidence and put him under arrest without a search and an arrest warrant.  Thus, to benefit the suspect, the court should consider the 4th amendment since the police officer conducted an unlawful search.  According to Obasogie & Newman (2019), the court should hold the police accountable due to police brutality.  Note that the citizens cannot see the efficacy of the criminal justice system unless the police who violates the law face legal repercussions. The author states that the lack of legal accountability makes the public develop frustration and anguish, and protest and riots. As a result, the public creates police mistrust. The latter will not only arise due to the failure to hold police accountable but it will also arise to the police racial discrimination against people of color (Obasogie & Newman, 2019).  For example, police use deadly force against African Americans than Whites and as a result, Blacks have police mistrust.  For many years, Blacks have demonstrated ‘morally outraged anger' following police violence against Blacks.  In reference to the case, the court should rethink about the Fourth Amendment and focus on police reform and doctrinal reform so that the police, as well as the court, can value dignity and fairness.

One example in the film that shows there is a need to revisit the constitutional laws to benefit the criminal justice system is that Crawford commits a tort by causing injuries and attempting to kill his wife.  Under the tort law, the man requires legal action because he puts the wife in a harmful situation or in other words, imminent danger.  Simons (2008) asserts that tort laws focus on harmful acts and the compensatory remedy is determined by the severity of the harm.  Tort laws also focus on deterring future torts and reinforcing social norms. Thus, if the court would consider the tort law, the criminal justice system would benefit in that it would judge the defendant's risky behaviors and as a result, it would limit the punitive costs in future, and it would assist the plaintiff in finding justice (Simons, 2008). The criminal court system would also promote distributive justice by requesting the party to give compensation, it would also promote deterrence and efficacy, and prevent rights-violations. Under the tort law, the court should consider the causation requirement to evaluate the defendant's tortious conduct that causes the plaintiff injury (Simons, 2008). The casual analysis will determinate all the contributing factors to hold the defendant responsible and accountable.

Rocky (1976) Movie Analysis

The movie Rocky (1976) was released on 21 November 1976. It ranked as the most successful American boxing drama and action movie at the time of its release. It was written by the starring Sylvester Stallone(Rocky Balboa), and directed by John Avildsen. The release of the movie in the industry marked the beginning of Balboa's acting career, having had thirty-two rejected scripts in the past. Sylvester spent three and a half days writing a draft of the film, and later Richard Halsey edited the plot, ensuring that there were no mistakes in the film. James Crabe was the cinematographer, and he played a significant role in graphics making, shooting of the movie, and music. The success of Rocky was evident through the numerous award the movie received. The movie was nominated in nine different categories during the 49th Oscar Awards, and it won three out of the nine which include the best picture, best film editing, and best director, challenging other films that had been released at that time. The movie has won other sixteen awards and gained twenty nominations since its release. Additionally, viewers online have highly rated this movie to an averaging score of eight out of ten. Rocky 1976 movie had a great lesson and portrayed excellent acting. This paper will analyze the plot of the movie, aesthetic choices, the social impacts of the movies, and a reflection of the analysis using the formalist theory.

The movie Rocky (1976) has many actors alongside the starring Rocky Balboa. Rocky Balboa is a kindhearted uneducated person who originates from Philadelphia. He works for Gazzo, the local crime boss, as a tax collector. In 1975, Apollo Creed, the heavyweight boxing champion wanted to organize boxing championship in Philadelphia. However, Creed weeks before the competition that his boxing partner incurred an injury, and won't participate in the competition. Creed is determined to continue with the fight, so he nominates Rocky "the Italian Stallion" to replace the injured heavyweight champion (Gallantz, 1978). Although Rocky is a highly talented man, many people lack faith in his abilities. Rocky seizes this opportunity to build his name in the world of sports.

Rocky meets Miles Jergens, the promoter who informs him that Creed is looking for boxing partners. Rocky reluctantly agrees to participate for  $150,000. Determined to win, Rocky trains tirelessly using all available resources. After several weeks of training, Mickey Goldmill, a gym instructor and a former fighter, offers to train Rocky, he always saw ability in him. At that time, Rocky encounters Adrian Pennino, a lady who works at a Fish pet store (Motley, 2005). The two develop romantic feelings towards each other, leading to a kiss. Paulie, Adrian's brother, is jealous of Rocky's success, but Rocky offers to advertise Paulie's meatpacking business, to calm him down. However, Rocky loses confidence after touring the boxing area, the night before the fight. He admits to his girlfriend, Adrian, that he does not see himself winning the match, but he really wants to fight creed, to prove himself to the world.

The fight between Creed and Rocky occurs on the New Year day. The fight started with creed appearing on stage with clothes similar to those of  George Wahington. Creed is overconfident, and Rocky takes advantage of Apollo’s pride to knock him down in the first round. Feeling annoyed and humiliated, Creed takes the fight more seriously. The championship continues for fifteen rounds, and both parties sustain injuries. Rocky sustains a head injury and retinal detachment, while Creed has a broken rib and internal bleeding. As the fight continues, Creeds skills are challenged by Rocky's extraordinary abilities to sustain punches, and his unwillingness to surrender (Tholas, 2017). The final bell rings with both participants locked in each other, where they promise one another that there would be no rematch. At the end of the match, the audience goes wild, and Jergens declares that the fight was the toughest ever experienced. Adrian comes running towards Rocky. Jurgens announces Creed as the winner following a split decision. Rocky and Adrian embrace one another, regardless of the results.

The movie applies the order of a narrative structure in different occasion. First, the set up of the movie begins with introducing the boxing championship in the Philadelphia United States. The writer introduces the protagonist Rocky as a person with exceptional boxing skills. Second, the writer action is seen when the competition is announced and Creed appoints Rocky as his opponent. Rocky faces the challenge to train more for the upcoming fight (Gallantz, 1978). The climax of the film occurs during the fight day. Rocky and Creed compete in the boxing ring. Further, the falling action happens when Rocky and Creed agrees that there will be no rematch, and Creed is declared the winner. Finally, resolution happens as Rocky has proven his abilities and he doesn't care who the winner is.

The plot of the movie brings spontaneous events that are directly or indirectly related to the story. The meeting of Rocky and Adrian was exceptional as Rocky is a strong and brave man who engages a shy girl. Another occasion is the reunion of Mickey and Rocky after ten years having a distance from one another. Another surprising event happens when Rocky is challenged to fight Creed. Rocky's friendship with Paulie also played a significant part in building his relationship with Adrian (Motly,2005). The plot of the movie is different from the story as while the film is focused on world championship competitions, there are many dramatic and related occurrences. Also, there are various family affairs in the movie.

Sound is a vital aspect in this movie. Silvester integrates both diegetic and non-diegetic sounds. The three basic types of sound are significant o the movie's success. Sound effects mean any sounds and not only the sound from speech or music that could be heard during an action. Music is effective in boosting the audiences' mood. Dialogue in Rocky (1976) helps to understand the storyline of the movie. Rocky uses a down to earth Philadelphia accent, which allows the audience to connect to Rocky. The sound effect in the film makes the movie realistic. Example of realistic sounds is the sound in the "Gonna Fly Down" song, and sound of the audience and the boxing arena when Rocky knocks Creed down. Additionally, music is used to cheer Rocky up during the match (Tholas, 2017). Therefore, the Rocky 1976 movie would drastically change if the music gets excluded. Second, the movie uses dull lighting at the beginning to represent the sad and unfulfilling life of Rocky. However, when Rocky gets into boxing, the lightings adjust and become brighter suggesting truth and joy.

Also, the composition of the frame in the Rocky movie is symbolic. Many scenes featuring Rocky and Adrian have tightly framed shots. The frames symbolize their everlasting love towards each other and the bond in their relationship (Gallantz, 1978). Further, a framed shot occurs during the fight between Creed and Rocky. The framed shot helps to make the fight more intense, and bring emphasize on Rocky's ability to compete the Creed.

The Rocky move has a lot of editing. There are various cuts and transitions, photograph angles and shots. First, the film is fonded on arts, evident within the editing. Editing played an important role in Rocky, thus winning the best film editing award in 1976. Richard Halsey and Scott Conrad edited the movie (Tholas, 2017). The movie used continuity cuts in different scenes. Continuity cutting entails maintaining the fluidity of an event without showing the whole scene. For example, only parts of the fights were featured in the final fight between Rocky and Creed, but the audience felt like they had seen the whole fight.

Second, the movie uses exceptional camera angles and shots. Many sets are not manipulated and look like a reflection of the real world. The movies uses both close up shots and long shots. At the start, Rocky is featured in a long shot. This goes on halfway to the movie, when Rocky is introduced as a debt collector and boxer in Philadelphia. The long shots symbolize the meaningless and powerless Rocky at the start (Motley, 2005). However, when Creed presents Rocky with an to participate in Boxing, the camera shots adjust and the photographer uses close up shots to symbolize the importance of Rocky.

However, The use of stock footage was one area that seemed important in feeling the stadium, and one notices empty seats on different occasions. The unbelievable involvement of Rocky in the fight is shown through the "The Calling of St. Matthew" images on Rocky's house (Tholas, 2017). The high technology used determined the extraordinary quality of the film. The Rocky movie became the only the third movie after Marathon Man and Bound for Glory to use the Steadicam Technology.

Rocky had phenomenal impacts on the people of Philadelphia and the world in general. There are many tourist attraction sites in Philadelphia, but the "Italian Stallion" statue of Rocky from the movie is the most rocking. Rocky became a sign of success in the city who achieved a lot under stormy circumstances (Motley, 2005). The Italian Stallion remains strong, even after forty-three years later. Sylvester quest for success was exceptional after unsuccessfully writing thirty-two scripts.

Moreover, the movie Rocky 1976 had tremendous effects on people sharing sports interest. The movie induced the spirit of hard work, determination, sacrifice, and dedication to sports lovers (Gallantz, 1978). The courage and determination portrayed by Rocky motivates individuals to put maximum efforts in the activities. Boxers at all levels have expressed their great admiration towards Rocky's efforts. Personally, I like the film and have learned a lot from watching it.

In conclusion, the Rocky (1976) movie is an extraordinary sports film. The movie has won various awards due to its exceptional filming skills. Rocky has been beneficial to the Philadelphia society and the world in general. However, some critiques claim that Rocky's attitude might mislead individuals in the sports world. But despite the critiques, Rocky is an undisputable winner and a hero in Philadelphia. Evidently, Rocky 1976 is a great movie and portray great acting skills.

Reflection

Over the course duration, I have gained valuable skills on how to analyze a film. At this stage, I have the capability to evaluate films and know the message in a movie in a more detailed manner than when I began.  I have come to know that there is more to movies than just entertainment. Most of the movies are designed in a manner that they relate to the occurrences in society. I have information on the various types of movies, content presentation, and casting styles.

The film theories learned has enabled me to understand the importance of movies and given me the knowledge to study the concept that connects films to other events, other pieces of arts, and the society in general.  The lessons in a move can help viewers to understand the society, economic issues, and politics better. Majority of films portray unacceptable behaviors negatively, and they provide solutions to those behaviors. Some movies act as motivational factors which gave people the willingness to face challenges in life.

I have also gained a better understanding of different cultural practice, diversities, and lifestyles. Also, I have gained a picture of the beauty of some parts of the world, through watching movies from all over the universe. From the learning in this class, I have come to appreciate what other people do. It has helped me to realize that there are different people in the world, but everyone is equal. Furthermore, I have gained a clear understanding of different disciplines in academics including history, religion, geography amongst others.

Moreover,  I have gained expertise in analyzing the themes and styles of movies. When watching a film these days, I find myself more interested in analyzing the film, rather than watching for fun. Also, I appreciate the people involved in movie production. Lastly, I have come to value the work of movie writers, cinematographers, editors and the whole cast that is involved in the acting and success of a movie.

The exceptional knowledge I have gained in this class will play a significant role in my future career.  It will be easy when I have enough knowledge of how the industry operates Since my plans are to become successful in the film industry. I can effortlessly explore themes, acting and casting features. This course has been extremely helpful because it provides a wonderful and quality experience which is applicable in class and the outside world.

A Time to Kill

Introduction

A Time to Kill is an American crime drama based on John Grisham first novel that goes by the same name. Grisham wrote this novel in the year 1989 and in the year 1996 the movie was filmed. The stars of the movie are: Sandra Bullock, Matthew McConaughey and Samuel L. Jackson. The movie is set in Mississippi, the plot of the film was based on the rape of a young girl whose father avenges her by killing the rapists and is later taken to court to be tried for murder. This film was a major breakthrough and was able to raise $ 152 million worldwide according to box office. The film was directed by Joel Schumacher.

The role of every actor in the film is very convincing, Samuel L. Jackson as Carl Lee Hailey was able to portray the role of an avenging father very well. Matthew McConaughey who plays the role of Jake Brigance, an easy-going white lawyer who defends Carl in court. This film is clearly the best version of the Grisham novels that have been filmed. Having being directed by an amazing competent director, Joel Schumacher who is known for directing other hit films such as; St. Elmo’s Fire, The Client and other successful movies (Ebert, 1996). The film as a story is well told. Due to the wide coverage of the press everyone in the country know Carl Lee Hailey, a man who killed the men who raped his daughters since he was afraid, they will be set free, many people in the country share Hailey’s feelings.

Throughout the case Hailey tells his lawyer that he is his secret weapon since he views him just like the white jury does therefore, his thinking and that of the jury is the same and he should just try to find out what would convince the jury to set him free. As Brigance prepares for his case his wife moves the children to safety and this opens up a new role for Sandra Bullock as Ellen Roark. A rich lady who studied law at Ole Miss and comes to Brigance rescue wanting to help him for free. The film climaxes with the court ruling that takes place in the court room, McConaughey describes the events surrounding the raping of Mr. Hailey’s daughter to the jury in a way that seems pornographic and later asks them to imagine that the girl is white (Ebert, 1996)

Despite how well the movie plot was followed it fails to revolve around black people more often. Most parts of the plot of the movie involves the mentors of Brigance, his expert witness, his wife, his assistant, and his secretary, all who are white. Very few scenes in the movie involve black people. An example of a scene that involves black people is one involving NAACP lawyers who try to convince the local pastor to hold a fundraising for Hailey’s case but he insists that the money be used to fund a black lawyer instead of a white lawyer though Hailey refuse’s this proposition (Ebert, 1996). This leaves me wondering why more scenes engaging black characters were not included in the movie plot.

The ending of the movie also leaves the audience confused since it seems rushed. A child enters the court room and claim that Hailey is innocent, people cheer to that and the jury sets him free yet he had already confessed to committing the crime. This child entering the courtroom was been used to hasten the happily ever after ending of the movie. A time to kill is an interesting, persuasive movie. It seems so convincing and the music in the film is well matched with the scenes of the movie (Ebert, 1996). I was completely moved by how McConaughey delivered his speech to the jury.

Conclusion

A Time to Kill is a film that revolves around the murdering of two men who had raped a black ten-year-old girl in Mississippi. This case was taken to court and a white lawyer represents the black man, with the help of his mentors and a rich Northern woman who aids him for free he does everything within his power to convince the jury to set him free. There are other twists and turns in the plot but the movie has a happy ending with the black man being set free despite murdering the two men who had raped his daughter. The music in the film is well incorporated with the scenes and it is a movie worth watching.

Gender roles in the movie Mulan

Thesis:  there is a great distinction between masculinity and femininity in terms of gender roles and the difference has led to gender-stereotypes roles and gender socialization.  However, women are struggling with their rights by breaking gender stereotypes and showing the power of their voice.

Fa Mulan, the protagonist in the movie is the central figure who plays a significant role in presenting the themes of gender as performance and gender-stereotypes roles.  It is important to understand that Fa Mulan is a brave girl who shows a lot of interest in self-definition or in other words she wants to understand her self-identity. As a woman, she looks forward to being acknowledged by society and more importantly enjoy her rights as a woman (Marshall & Ozlem, 106).  However, as the Emperor requests each family to give one man who would participate in the war, Mulan enters in the war field and hides her identity. Unfortunately, her identity is revealed and she is humiliated.   This shows that there are gender stereotypes in the society and this creates a violation of human rights since women are discriminated in various domains like decision-making and access to resources (Marshall  & Özlem, 106).  The gender-based roles are socially constructed and the society has behavior patterns that are expected from men and women.

Another thing that shows a difference in gender roles in modern society is the gender socialization or the norms and behaviors that each sex is expected to show.   Since Mulan's father could not join the war because of sickness, Mulan cut off her hair and took the weapons for war and join other men in the war.   Despite her effort to hide her identity and to develop a male appearance, she was rejected in the war since she was a woman and women cannot tolerate the pain and sacrifice in the war (Marshall & Ozlem, 107).  Despite the fact that Mulan wanted to prove that she is not only a housewife but also a warrior,   she was seen as a disgrace after the soldiers recognized her sex.  This shows that in societies, there is gender socialization or in other words, there are behavioral differences to group members.  During childhood,  individuals are taught to behave in certain ways with respect to their reproductive organs. Each sex is expected to adhere to certain norms, behaviors, and beliefs. For example, boys are expected to be loud whereas girls are expected to be quiet. This gender socialization creates gender stereotypes which creates a gap between masculine and feminine.

Despite the gender-stereotypes roles in modern society, Mulan has shown that women are breaking gender roles and proving wrong the theory that ‘men are capable of defending the nation and that women are not capable of war’. She proves the statement wrong by saying that women are not domestic slavery but they are strong and can they can achieve more of what is expected from them.  Mulan is a strong female character and she is against the traditional masculinity (Marshall  & Ozlem, 123).  As a strong woman, she believes that she cannot live up to the constructed gender expectation but she must move beyond the comfort zone and act like a masculine. In the end, she saves China and fights for her father and for herself.  She very well knew that society expected women to behave in a certain way and fulfill certain roles but she believed that both men and women are responsible for serving the Emperor.   Even though the movie presented the gender-stereotypes that women go through, it has presented an important theme of breaking the gender roles and this shows that Mulan is heroin.

The Gender Role in the movie Mulan.

Gender role-swapping usually happens where a particular gender tends to perform duties expected for the other gender. Someone feels much comfortable doing the activities expected of opposite gender than of own gender.

There is over-feminism where powers and roles held by men in the society are taken by women as seen in the movie Mulan.

The females have taken a step of searching for males for love rather than waiting for the males to search for them (Fruzinska, 123). Mulan takes a step of finding herself a spouse and she manages to find the most handsome boy of who marries her.

There is gender immune where people happen to do activities of both genders.

In the movie, Mulan learns gender when she combines the two; feminine and masculine. She acts as the popular heroes by masking and going to fight in the army dressed as a Ping (Fruzinska, 121). The society realizes this later and they only accept and acknowledge the uniqueness in her. She also assumes the masculine role by looking for a boyfriend instead of the men looking for her. She finally succeeds showing that she can comfortably do what male gender usually does in spite her being a female.

There is genderless where there is lack of typical qualities associated with either gender as outlined in the movie.

Mulan feels genderless when she tries to imitate men under recruitment in the camp. She happens to act like a spectacle, overdrawn and clumsy (Fruzinska, 116). She assists to spill the tea but at the same time she provokes fight in the camp. This shows that Mulan is unable to fit in either gender and appears to be in between masculine and feminine.

There is gender roles transgression where the feminist gender breaks the rules and does what is expected of masculine gender.

Mulan breaks the rules by doing contrary to the wishes of her father when she goes for the war (Fruzinska, 117). When the empire asks each family to produce one gentleman to join in the Champion army, Mulan takes the armor that belongs to his father knowing that his father was the only elderly male in the family and left for the war. She believes that she will bring victory back to the society by fighting the Hun. She also does contrary to the expectations of the society when she decides to find a man for her marriage.

Genetically Modified Food: Panacea or Poison (2005)

Summary of the Documentary

The documentary centers on controversial issues surrounding Genetically Modified Foods. The fact is, there is no single research shedding light on the safety of Genetically Modified Food (Josh, 2005). Hence, people advocating for it are misleading the public. The documentary goes further and dares corporations pushing Genetically Modified Foods to give sufficient proof that the foods are safe for human consumption.

Reaction

In my opinion, the topic is highly debatable and the documentary clearly shows that scientist hold varying opinions on the topic consequently the burden of proof still not available and hanging in the balance.

According to the information gathered from the documentary, majority of the corporations have eggshells on their faces after failing to prove beyond reasonable doubt the safety of Genetically Modified Food on the natural environment and this uncertainty led to violent protests (Josh, 2005). The uncertainty is similar to a hazardous nutritional experiment targeted at innocent lives.

Although the documentary film is a few years old, it educated me on importance of the food choices I make on a daily basis and the specific outcomes of those choices. The facts and data were numerous thanks to the collection of lecturers that ranged from statesmen, FDA officials, campaigners, farmers and academic scholars. While I possess fundamental information on genetically modified foods, questions raised on some issues opened my mind and changed my perspective on some vital issues. For instance, genetic alteration of DNA for food originated from the concept that crossbreeding florae would enhance survival capabilities of the same plants consequently enabling to survive in harsh environments. Thus, documentary ends up looking at both sides of the argument. Food owners argue that genetically modified food will improve on food security and afford hungry a meal.

Introduction

Medea’s Family reunion is a movie full of drama and   comedy. Madea the central character of the film , got  an  order from a court  to  be a guardian  to a naughty  and  rebellious  teen, Nikki. Consequently, the role of shaping the values and behavior of Nikki fall solely in the hands of Madea. She   has to bring unity within   her family and bring   the extended family together through a family reunion. The essay will critically review the family evaluation of the Madea and   her family members. Moreover, it will give out a comparison between various  characters within the  film and  how  it  affects  the  fabric   of the  family  and  extends into the  society  a whole. On the other  side, character give  clues on the types  of  life styles and  routines that  pass from  one family  member to the  next due  to common  practices.

Plot and setting of the film

The movie covered all aspects of a family. That is, the good, bad and ugly   sides without leaving the funny side. The plots rotate around the romantic adventures of Madea’s    nieces, Lisa and Vanessa. The two women are half-sisters. Lisa is in a stable relationship with a   rich   banker, Carlos. Carlos has a heavy temper. On other hand, Vanessa is a single parent with two children sharing two different fathers. Frankie is a bus driver who pursues Vanessa with the intention of making her his lover. The relationship between Vanessa and Frankie grows, as they genuinely love each other. Lisa is afraid   to speak out about her an abusive relationship. It is important to note that Madea   is likable and gives advice to both young and old family members (Smith, 2011).

Character development of Madea’s family across generations

In the perspective of a nurse, most characters in the movie have wisdom and rectify anything they find unpleasant   or a behavior that can affect the entire family. In other words, they try healing a mistake before it infects other family members. For  instance, Madea , throughout  the  movie  gives  counsel through  proverbs and  other  facts about  life. It is the strictness of Madea that makes Lisa and Vanessa find their path in life and gain new confidence in themselves (Smith, 2011).

Madea is kind and knowledgeable. Even after   becoming a foster parent to Nikki, she is able to shape her behavior using her past wisdom. For example, Madea converses with Nikki’s teachers about her character and gets the hint that Nikki does not usually complete her homework. Therefore, Madea disciplines Nikki with a belt when she arrives home from school. Madea’s character is able to shape the entire family through her impact and influence on Lisa and Vanessa. Lisa   and Vanessa will then impart the knowledge of Madea to their children. The chain will continue and live even after Madea’s demise. In summary, Madea  is able  to change  the  behavior  and values  of  her nieces  through  her  kind words and  experience in the  world. The  family  members influenced  Madea will  later   use  the  influence on  their  children  hence  having  a pendulum effect (Carey, 2016).

Evaluation of sociocultural and exercises passed from generation to generation

The characters in the movie stumble upon each other’s secrets during living room socialization periods. The movie   displays black culture and tries to campaign for unity and love within the community. The fact that the movie openly displays   its dislike for upper middle class by coercing them to part with   secrets such as domestic abuse and even rape shows its stand on certain societal issues. For  example  rich  husbands end up beating  their wives and  uncouth mothers end up  giving  their  daughters to old men in exchange  for money (Carey, 2016).

The main character, Madea ensures that Christian ideals mix into the black American culture through pop and soul music. For illustration, the poem  by  Maya Angelou cements the last  forgiveness in the  film so that the  family  may  become  more united  and  leave  the  past  behind and  exhibit black power and love (Carey, 2016).

Themes within the film, the environment, and other negative components seen in the movie

In a nurse’s perspective, the theme of drug abuse comes out loudly and clearly. The characters in the movie indulge in alcohol and champagne in some of the scenes. Even  at the  family  reunion, there  is  wine  and  other  types  of alcohol. The characters seem to be enjoying the drinks during meals (Richardson, & Project Muse, 2007).

Joe and Madea have a sour relationship as siblings. They are mean to each other and remind the audience that they are a bad example to emulate in their real families lives. The comedy and that accompanies their relationship scenes make it bearable   to watch. On the other hand, Victoria   brings out the theme of deceit as she forces her daughter into a loveless relationship for material gain. Although her actions comes back to haunt her, she refuses to apologize to her daughter (Richardson, & Project Muse, 2007).

Conclusion

In summary, the movie is compelling and entertaining. Even though  it  is  comical in nature, it  tries to bring  out  common ills in the  society and  tries  to  rectify  the  domestic issues such as  sexual abuse  and  violence  and family  disunity.

Speech: stages of relationship development

In the movie ‘When Harry Met Sally 1989 Movie', there are two apparent stages of relationships namely; De-intensification and individualization. The former can be defined a stage when the partners decrease interaction and dependence and increase distance.  The latter can be defined as a stage when the partners increase separation and concentrate on their lives as individuals but not as couples.  In minute 27:06 to 30:15, Sally and Harry wanted to stay in the relationship and avoid getting married to each other. Harry and Sally are strangers who later develops a friendship.  They start the stages of relationship development such as the experimenting phase when they argue whether a man and woman can have a friendship without engaging in sexual activities (Broady, 1).  After initiating the relationship and integrating their thoughts, they enter in the de-intensification stage.  As both are adventuring the external world, they decrease interaction and keeps distance.  In the ordinary world, both focus on college education and attainment of the goal.  The de-intensification face leads to individualization state when both enter into the avoidance phase. At this stage, the friendship cools to the extent of not answering each other's call (Broady, 1).

Overall, de-intensification is a stage in the relational de-escalation, and the stage occurs when the partners develop unclear relationship definition, shows less mutual acceptance and decrease communication and physical contact.  First, partners experience the escalation stage and then enters the de-escalation stage due to adversaries and disagreements (Broady, 1).  As a result of the de-escalation, individuals enter in the individualization stage where develop a sense of individuality and rely on one's true self.  Both de-intensification and individualization tend to place each partner away from intimacy and focus on observing and understanding each other (Broady, 1).

Hollowing out the Middle

Q1.

According to the movie ‘The Farm Crisis,' the decline of the American Farmer was caused by the bankruptcy.  The 1980s farm crisis was rooted from earlier decades when farmers encountered debts.  In 1929, American people including the farmers, the urban people and the poor in the rural areas suffered and lost massively (lowa Public Television, 1).  For example, farmers sold their product at low prices,   business and workers declined as a result of the stock market crash, families could not purchase products and demand for manufactured goods was low.  During the First World War, farmers produced crops and livestock, but they ended up in bankruptcy since the price dropped at a higher rate (lowa Public Television, 1).

Q2

High tech jobs is an indication of a healthy local economy.  Today, highly-skilled and highly-educated people in America have high-tech talent, and these talents are acting as a driver to wealthy. However, high-tech jobs in the U.S are concentrated in places, and this is a sign of geographic inequality which leads to economic and political inequality (LIU, 1).  High-tech jobs are located in the metropolitan areas, and the top cities are; San Jose, San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles and more.  These areas are characterized by highly-skilled people with bachelor's degree, the share of knowledge, the share of tech workers and high capital investment (LIU, 1).

Q3

People leave rural areas for four reasons, first, there are people known as the Achievers-these people move from rural to urban areas to seek further education and after school, they never return. Second are stayers-these people get employment opportunities during high school, and they become town dwellers throughout their lives (LIU, 1). Third are seekers-these people are underprivileged in that they lack the necessary education needed in the modern economy. Thus, they end up in the military and related jobs. Finally, some returners experience and meet challenges in the external world and return to their small communities. Overall, people leave rural areas since there are not enough resources and training which assist young adult to succeed in life (LIU, 1).

Q4

In comparing the map of the location of high tech jobs and the map of church attendance, there are connections. First, the areas where there are many high-tech jobs have more religious groups and higher attendance (ChurchPOP, 1). On the other hand, areas with fewer high-tech jobs have less attendance. Cities such as San Antonio, Dallas, Houston and big cities have higher attendance. Rapid growth will continue in that there is a higher population concentration in urban areas which is leading to the growth of religious communities (ChurchPOP, 1).

Q5

When religious people move from rural areas to metropolitan areas, they form communities of faith and build a house of worship which define their identities. Metropolitan areas become characterized by diverse and social forms of religion where people present different practices as a way of worshiping God (The Real Truth, 1).

 Q6

A megachurch is a non-Catholic church with massive attendance of more than 2,000 attendees.  These churches have various centers such as divorce centers, computer centers, halls, gymnasiums and other centers where people find different things (The Real Truth, 1).  Also, megachurches are entertaining, focus on traditional religious ideas, bible reading is non-compulsory, there are motivational speeches and attendees are encouraged to think positive and to have a good attitude.  People attend mega church since the church hold multi-ethnic population, use technology in worshipping, high level of interpersonal relationship, opportunity to choose ministries and the availability of resources and facilities such as preschools and licensed counselors (The Real Truth, 1). The mega church is located in the metropolitan areas where they are a high population, technology, highly educated populations, relatively wealthy people, good infrastructure and areas with the dramatic growth of population. Example of these areas includes; Houston, Dallas, Oklahoma City, Nashville, Los Angeles and more (The Real Truth, 1).

Sociological Analysis of a Movie: "The Breakfast Club"

Introduction

John Hughes was the director of the Breakfast club movie and it was released in 1985. The film involved five students who were detained and they were to spend the Saturday together. Though the movie is old given that it was released in the year 1985 it is still applicable in today’s community as it was then.  This paper analyzes the sociology perspective in the breakfast club movie in reference to the American dream, inequality and the stratification.  At the beginning of the movie, all the students seemed comfortable with their different stereotype. All the students were unique in their own way and later they become friends by looking past their experience. The breakfast club movie shows how different children can be divided and also how they can be linked to social labels. Social labels are used to divide people by their appearance, interest, and behaviors. In today people think that social labels cause harm in the societies. However, everyone is working hard to protect his or her own personal label. Social labels are very important in a person lives because they give a personal identity in a given group that shares the same interests.

The American dream is the perfect Government which will protect each citizen opportunity to pursue their own ideas of happiness. Inequality is everywhere, according to statistics it is clear that rich families invest more in their children education.  Poor class and middle class are stacked in the educational opportunities and the poor kids go to school with fewer quality resources. The conflict theory in sociology shows the inequality of a social group. Inequality can be seen through economic or politics. The film demonstrated a number of examples that had social group conflicts. For example, it shows the conflict that was created in the school by different social groups. The lipstick scene that was created by the inequality social groups demonstrates social conflicts. Claire was convinced by the other students to show her lipstick skills and she accepted and went ahead in applying the lipstick which its tube was attached to her bra (Hughes 4:39). When she finished the team shared a laugh for her skills though Brenda did not clap more and the group attacked him for being mean to Claire. Claire commented that she also has feelings and that they hurt as much and Brenda responded by saying no one is allowed to compare him with  her since Claire comes from a rich family, she get everything she wants like diamond rings. It is clear that Claire comes from a rich family while Brenda comes from a poor family. Both Claire and Brenda live in two different social groups and social classes in the same community. The difference that occurs in the two social groups is that it leads to conflict which makes individuals feel jealous, inequality and unfairness. The family of Bender was not able to meet all of his needs compared to Claire who had everything and Bender believed they are unequal and they can never be compared (Hughes 4:54)

Social deviance is the most prevalent sociological perspective in the movie. Looking at their actions it can be observed that all have not yet reached the identity stage and this is seen through their deviant behavior. A deviant individual is someone who goes against social norms.  All the students demonstrated deviant behavior through their actions which made them be punished or how they acted during the period of detention. Allison showed deviant behavior when he stole Brian wallet and Claire deviant behavior can be noticed when she engaged in a romantic relationship with John and skip classes (Hughes 3:40).John deviant behavior is seen when he refuses to engage in school activities and later he destroys the school properties. Andy broke the social norms by smoking marijuana the reason being that he is a varsity player. Brian deviant behavior is seen when he comes with a gun in school in order to commit suicide. Clearly, it can be noted that there all struggling with their social identities. Conflict perspective is proven where the conflict between the students benefited them at the end.  Given that there are from different society and background the fact remains that there are all students and that there used every means to go against the school administration. They all showed social shifts, for instance, Claire become more rebellious and Bender was so emotions when there were together with Claire. The students become comfortable with the environment surrounding them and they created new roles.

Social control is also demonstrated in the breakfast club. Social control describes various social rules and political processes that regulate and controls individual or group behavior. According to the law individuals, relationship and commitments should not be broken. The breakfast club was on a Saturday detention meaning that detention is used by the government to punish and control the students who broke the law. The students are being motivated not to break the law by being threatened for more Saturday in the detention. Vernon the principal went further to punish the students by telling them to write an essay (Hughes 1:08) The detention is used as a way to punish the students for their wrong behavior and Saturday detention is used to let them know that their actions are wrong and to encourage them to act well in order to avoid such criminal actions.

The shallow attitude expressed in the movie indicates that there is a darker and hopeless perspective. This can be noted when Allison told John that when he grows up his heart will die and John responded by saying that he does not care at all (Hughes 2:55) His voice was full of sarcasm meaning that the adolescence is a stage full of fear and doubt. In the year 1930 America was going through hard times of war and political strife and it tried to get a solution through the culture which was totally not culturally accepted. The breakfast club movie it is noted that each character had their own stereotypes and there were working hard to defy them. For example, Allison laughed wickedly when she noticed that she had slept with the therapist also John tears his book saying that education has no importance in life and Andrew threatens to fight John for provoking him. All these are stereotypes which are viewed as negative. This can be viewed on how the American treats the foreign people and their ideas.

There is the social class distinction in the breakfast club. The society is divided into the social group into three major economic groups which are upper class, middle class, and the lower class. In the firm, most of the students were being dropped in the school by their parents. Social class was reflected in which means the students arrived the school with. For instance, Claire was driven to school in a BMW car by her dad, this car is known to be an expensive car and it can only be afforded by the individuals of high class. Claire father also wore expensive clothes such as Burberry scarf; the Burberry scarf and BMW car are recognized from far and give a suggestion of a social class. Brian is seen dropped by a Plymouth station wagon which is viewed to be an economical car and mostly it is used by middle-class guys. Both Andrew and Allison arrived with cars that indicated they belong to middle-class while Bender walked to school. This indicated that Claire belongs to higher class compared to the rest (Hughes 6:28).

In conclusion, the students were able to give different remarks of view on circumstances and they shared what they felt and stories that helped them to cope with various problems they encountered. The movie demonstrated the impact of social status and the identity formation of people. It shows how individuals broke the social norms in order to attain social status or identity. At the end of the movie, it can be noted that there all become friends and helped each other to accept their difference.  According to the film, American dream can only be achieved when people admit that there are major problems involved during the transition from adolescence stage to adulthood.  In the teenage year’s individual are seen as foolish forgetting that it is a gateway to do away with childhood and preparing them to be adults. There is no vision or hope for society if teenagers are not motivated to be good people. All the students in the film showed that they had the power but they were limited by control over them and all of them walked out of school being friends.

A story of a hotel

Introduction

The movie, The Grand Budapest Hotel directed by Wes Anderson and inspired by Stefan Zweig’s writings was released in 2014 (Anderson 1). The movie is composed of mousetrap stories that invoke historical background in a mournful temperament way. The Grand Budapest Hotel received several nominations including, Golden Globe awards, BATFA awards among others. Not only did the movie win many awards on the historical perspective, but also awards for costume design, makeup, and hairdressing. The report outlines the adventures of Gustave, a trusted man in the European hotel, The Grand Buda pest hotel, and his colleague Moustafa Zero. The story is grounded on theft and repossession of an invaluable canvas of a gigantic family wealth. A young teenage girl visits the statue of the author. The author got inspired to write the story in 1968 after he paid a visit to the hotel in European Country Mountains of Zubrokwa. Then at that time, the author met the owner of the hotel, Zero Moustafa who gives the author a whole narrative of the story on how he became to the owner (Itzkof 1). The Grand Buda pest hotel is an outstanding movie since it offers comic but a respectful reflection of the Holocaust disgusts.

The film is a very exclusive cinema piece. It is expressed as a story that is within another and at the beginning, the movie’s eccentricities do not appear to own any sense beyond pure oddness (Scott 1). However, with its progression, it becomes rather apparent that it expresses deeper issues with respect to history and to how those in the present life recalls it. Anderson utilizes visual rhetoric to communicate the subject of honoring a cherished past balanced with the approach of passing viewing backward in regard to time so that a more unprejudiced viewpoint can be accomplished (Scott 1).

The movie was entirely filmed in Germany a place called Saxony and the other studio of Babelsberg. Photography work of the film started being conducted in January 2013 near Berlin. One of the locations for shooting the movie was a departmental store within the giant atrium, this place survived the World War 2 attack making its ideal environment for film industry shooting. The film was shot in three aspect ratios with wider shots of the hotel being used as 10 feet tall to eliminate friction. Alexandre Desplat, a colleague who worked with Anderson composed the sounds in the movie.

The music was appealing to the audience because it creates a sober mood in regard to the sensitive subjects that the film attempts to address. The music in the background was also done by Deplat together with some Russia folk music. A specific Balalaika sound was established in the film to bring out the musical vocal of the film with other instruments like alphorns and whistles being used (Scott 1). While the musical scores are quite conventional in its general utilization of melody, rhythm, and melody, it however, remains to be highly distinctive via the combination of extensive melodies, unforgettable ostinatos and common instrumentations in addition to a sort of open strategy to the film’s themes via statements that are emotionally inspired (Anderson and Hugo 6). Actually, this is some musical impressions that have been known and anticipated from Desplat’s dependable concrete film design notches.

The meaning of the film revolves around preserving and recalling some treasured facts. This becomes apparent towards the final stages of the film. Zero notes how Mr. Gustav preserved a disappearing world for the short run despite the fact that it had principally vanished prior to his presence. Basically, the meaning of the film is that everything that individuals see is exposed to misapprehension and clarification. Perhaps the more fundamental thematic is the manner in which Gustave is remembered by his wife and the manner in which his presence is a callback to a history that had long passed (Anderson 44:12). It appears that Anderson directed the film with the belief that preserved past holds much worth, having been regenerated and reevaluated numerous times. This makes it clear that the primary theme of the film is based on how individuals perceive the past, contrasted with the real state of the past occurrences.

The entire storyline of this film is additionally floated not simply by a feeling of development, but rather reevaluation and people reinventing themselves. Lead characters are individuals who have developed into better people others around them. Madame D., burdened by appropriateness and matriarchal duty and recollections of when she was young, meets Gustave at the hotel and never looks back as she is in a dream. Gustave becomes the main individual in her life who treated her delicately in her old age, so in return, she wills him the canvas that (in the long run) changes Zero's life and his.

He is then imprisoned where he meets detainees imprisoned for all manner of violations. They all escape alongside Gustave with the help of Zero and Agatha. At that point, they all heap into a taxi and vanish into the free world. This brings Zero and Gustave to a point where they look at each other as equals. That is also shown in the way they are framed after the prison break, as they now being placed on the same plane of view always side by side, wearing clothes of the same color and having conversations as equals (Itzkof 1). Moreover, the changes are evident even in the way Gustave embraces Zero while calling him his befriend. Storytelling in this film is exquisite as shown in its film’s final moments where a notion of stories as inheritances, currencies, legacies, gifts are brought about. At the end, there is a fast forward to when the author who met zero at the hotel is old silently on a sofa alongside his grandson. He’s tiring a suit sort of similar to the one he wore on the night he interviewed Zero who was then far much older at the magnificent hotel. A night that a viewer can tell was one of the utmost significant he would ever experience in his life.

At some point, one has to come to the realization that the kind domination is precisely what is what the movie is about. As the visual story is unparalleled: the use of symmetry as the story unfolds manipulating the objects within the frame and the frame itself utilizing a centered frame. This is a unique film changing the aspect ratio shape to establish time periods. Aspect ratio superbly used to jump through timelines from Zero’s present-day point of view interview with the writer, while developing the story between him, Gustave and Agatha the center of his universe (Itzkof 1). Use of light and dramatic camera movement does not fail. As this is also a part of this that gives it the flare.

In concluding this paper, it is evident that the author, Wes Anderson used a lot of creativity in this movie to lure his viewers in the Zubrwoka world. It is through this creativity that he came up with the theme ‘The Grand Buda Pest Hotel’’ with most of the work done in this movie by hand and not the computer. This approach is useful in ensuring that the readers fully comprehend the theme of the story which revolves around the value of recalling the treasured history and the need to cut through to the meaningful events as they occurred in life. The story’s target audience is the general populace since everyone has a cherished past. However, it mainly targets those dealing with heavy losses and their pasts, therefore, means a lot and might have played part in the person they have grown to be in the present. This to them is important as it offers detailed, comic and yet respectful information on how they can get through these events and still retain the capability to recall and cherish the worth of their past. This approach aligns with this reports thesis that ‘’The Grand Buda Pest Hotel’’ is an exclusive and outstanding film since it offers a comic but respectful reflection of the Holocaust disgusts. In that, the film focuses on individual’s past and how others perceive them. More so it concentrates on the general efforts and needs to cherish the past not only based on its worth but also contributions to the present life.

NETFLIX IN INDIA: THE WAY AHEAD

Analyze The Level of Competitiveness in the SvoD Industry in India Using Porter’s Five Forces Model?

Netflix is mainly objected at offering the most extensive and expensive shows while upholding the changing consumer’s preferences. The company has acquired a sustainable advantage for years based on the fact that it offers variety (Hitt, Ireland & Hoskisson, 2016).

Threat of New Entrants

In India SVoD industrial entrants threats are medium. The movie and filming industry in India is well organized but there is intensifying competition in regard to online streaming which is expected to rise further in the future. The threats of those that are getting into the market are average given that the fresh entrants are the existing indirect operators that are attracted into the market by the intensifying demand (Hitt, Ireland & Hoskisson, 2016). However, the well-established companies such as Netflix enjoys a significant market share thus sustaining their competitive positions in the industry. There are several websites that are engaged in the online streaming market but most of them have already been established adequately (Hitt, Ireland & Hoskisson, 2016). In addition, the entry level barriers are minimal but the entrance is affected by the establishment of the popular websites.

Buyers Bargaining Power

The general bargaining power of buyers is quite high given that companies have several options to choose from. Based on the international model that encourages variety and diversity websites such as Netflix, which offers the consumer with higher bargaining influence. On the ground that several alternatives to opt because consumers are only loyal to the offered content rather than the provider. In addition, the cost is a major determining force given that consumers are becoming sensitive to prices as well as quality (Hitt, Ireland & Hoskisson, 2016).

Substitutes Threat

Substitute’s threat is quite moderate. In that, the threats are only subjected by the established companies which have acquired significant shares in the market. Most of the companies are involved in providing downloading options which, therefore, creates fewer threats in the Indian market.

Supplier’s Power

Despite the fact that the online streaming consists of minimal suppliers the bargaining authority of the suppliers is quite high. In that, the suppliers take advantage on the ground that the consumers have fewer options. Majority of Netflix content is usually acquired from licensing deals and the majority of the suppliers provide downloading options which challenge the performance of the market (Hitt, Ireland & Hoskisson, 2016).

Rivalry among the Existing Competitors

The rivalry in the market is average. With the growing number of fresh ventures into the digital industry, the segmentation of the market is decreasing rather rapidly. In this context, the established companies are involved in attempting to sustain their shares while focusing on the needs of the market. The market is evolving which creates a considerable rivalry.

Based on your analysis, list what you feel are the most important factors that will impact Netflix’s success in the Indian market? Explain your reasoning.

In my own opinion, the forces that are likely that might affect the performance of Netflix in India is the rivalry, increased consumer power and supplier power. In that, the consumers have more power on the ground that they have several platforms to make their selection. On the other hand, the supplier’s authority affects the performance of Netflix in that it is required to operate under high expenses which will, in turn, affect its general productivity (Markides, 2008). Despite the fact that the rivalry in the market is minimal its impact cannot be ignored given that this is expected to increase in the near future based on minimal legal limitation in regard to entry.
