Terracotta Army, Tomb of the First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty

Terracotta Army, Tomb of the First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty

Your job for each TCP is to clearly present a case for a particular work of art as exemplary
of its time and worthy of representation aboard your ship. Central questions:    as    we    look
back    at    all    the    works    of    art    that    have    been    produced    over    the    course    of    history,    why    is    it
important that people remember and learn about this one? What did it mean at the time,
and    what    does    its    preservation    stand to    add to    future    human existence?
There    are    three stages    for each TCP assignment:
1.    writing    and    posting    your    proposal as    instructed    below,
2.    posting    “challenge questions” under your fellow classmates’ TCPs, and
3.    responding to    the “challenge questions” that your classmates    have    asked    you
about    your    TCP,    and    defending    your    choice.

Each TCP should start with the following basic information:
1. The name of the work.
2.    Creator    of    work (if    known).
3.    Date    or    approximate date of work.
4. A    detailed description of the work (limit summary to one paragraph maximum,
then limit further description to those aspects of the work that help you best make
your arguments for its preservation)
5. A    general discussion of the historical context of its time (what were some of the
major events that shaped life at the time the work was created?).
The    following    questions    should    then    be    addressed    for    each    work:
6.    How is    this    work typical of    its    era? (Be    specific as to    what    was    typical    of    its    era,
and    how    the    work    fits    into    the    cultural    context    of    the    era.    This    section    should
specifically discuss form    and content trends of the art styles at the time, that is, what
typical art forms looked like or sounded like, and what subject matter was typical
for that art form.)
7. How is the work innovative or unusual for its time? (Be specific as to why this
piece stands out from    its peers.)
8. How was the work received in its time, and why? (Give evidence.)
9.    What do    people    today    think    about    the    work?    (Give    evidence.)    How    do    you    account
for    any    differences    between    reception    then    and    today?
10.    What is    your    personal reaction    to    the    work? What about it do    you find
particularly meaningful? (Be specific.)
11.    How does    this    work compare specifically to    one    other    work    of    its    type    and/or
time? (Prepare at least a couple paragraphs of discussion, devoted to comparing and
contrasting this work to another in specific terms. This analysis may be
incorporated    into    your    answers    for    questions #1 and #2 above, or may be its own
section    depending    on    your    style.    Just be    sure    to    address    all of    these    questions    in
some detail.)
12. What about this work is most significant for future generations to be aware of?
