Genetically Modified Food: Panacea or Poison (2005)

Genetically Modified Food: Panacea or Poison (2005)

Summary of the Documentary

The documentary centers on controversial issues surrounding Genetically Modified Foods. The fact is, there is no single research shedding light on the safety of Genetically Modified Food (Josh, 2005). Hence, people advocating for it are misleading the public. The documentary goes further and dares corporations pushing Genetically Modified Foods to give sufficient proof that the foods are safe for human consumption.

Reaction

In my opinion, the topic is highly debatable and the documentary clearly shows that scientist hold varying opinions on the topic consequently the burden of proof still not available and hanging in the balance.

According to the information gathered from the documentary, majority of the corporations have eggshells on their faces after failing to prove beyond reasonable doubt the safety of Genetically Modified Food on the natural environment and this uncertainty led to violent protests (Josh, 2005). The uncertainty is similar to a hazardous nutritional experiment targeted at innocent lives.

Although the documentary film is a few years old, it educated me on importance of the food choices I make on a daily basis and the specific outcomes of those choices. The facts and data were numerous thanks to the collection of lecturers that ranged from statesmen, FDA officials, campaigners, farmers and academic scholars. While I possess fundamental information on genetically modified foods, questions raised on some issues opened my mind and changed my perspective on some vital issues. For instance, genetic alteration of DNA for food originated from the concept that crossbreeding florae would enhance survival capabilities of the same plants consequently enabling to survive in harsh environments. Thus, documentary ends up looking at both sides of the argument. Food owners argue that genetically modified food will improve on food security and afford hungry a meal.
