Liberty Leading the People

Art

Liberty Leading the People, is an artwork by Euge’ne Delacroix which was painted in order to pass the message of liberty. Eugene painted a very unique image of a woman holding a flag bearing the colours of the national flag of France. On her left hand, the lady a gun and on her right hand, she had a flag which had been raised up high. Behind her, there were people dressed in black hats, black coats and khaki pants. These people were following her and on their hands each one of them either had a sword or a gun. On the ground, bodies laid helplessly, as if they had been murdered during a war. The lady seemed to be a leader of a certain group which had finally won the battle and they were celebrating their victory.

Eugene’s work was symbolic, in the sense that each and everything that he painted had its own hidden meaning. The flag which was held up high by the lady had three colours which were, blue, white and red. This was the flag of the French revolution, and it therefore meant that the French revolution was in total control of the country. Moreover, when the lady passes over the dead bodies, it shows that the French revolution has conquered all its enemies and it is therefore its work to carry out whatever activity it is expected of it by the society. This consequently means that Eugene’s artwork was majorly dedicated to the society, in that it explained the way each and everything took place in the society. Moreover, Eugene’s artwork was very significant in making the society to be able to understand its origin and thus to live in peace.
