La Joconde. Mona Lisa

Art and Ideas

Artwork comprises of different forms from ancient methods to present methods, some of the common artwork forms are painting, drawings, curving, animation, architecture, artistic design, folk, photography, and video, among others. This art works keep on evolving as the world develops. This paper will address two types or artwork that is painting and drawings. Art is a measure of human creativity or the performance of imaginative technical skills. An idea is any thought which is said to be productive in mental activity.

Painting

A painting is applying the different form of colors, paints, pigment or any other medium and applies them to a plain surface in order to come up with an image by use of paints. For instance, Mona Lisa is one of the most recognized painting jobs in the world. Painting is the mode of an art because an artist needs to be creative before starting the painting job.

French: La Joconde. Mona Lisa

Object type: painting

Mona Lisa has been one of the most recognized among the best painting jobs in the world, which was done by an artist by the name Leonardo da Vinci. This artist painted a picture of a portrait woman between the year 1503 and 1506, later the picture was acquired by the king of France where the portrait is currently displayed in the museum (Freud, 1947). The source of La Joconde.Mona Lisa is Musee du Louvre, Atlas database.

The painting of a Mona Lisa picture is said to be an art because it brings the creativity and imaginative technical skill intending to create and beauty hence included in the production of work of an art. The painting is said to be one of the earliest portraits to express sitter of an imaginary world, the painter of this portrait was one of the painters to use aerial perspective. The picture of a woman is portrayed seated and she looks as to be on the dark pillar. On the back side, there is a vast landscape facing the mountains with ice, winding paths and a bridge to give the image of a human presence.

Elements

Elements of painting work are the common composition of blocks of a general art. Following are few elements identified in my example of painted picture of Mona Lisa

Color

The painter has used different colors in order to come up with the final image; he has used colors like brown, black, orange, maroon, and blue (Feldman, 1971).

Line

The painter has used a thin black line all around the picture to differentiate between the picture of a woman and the background (Feldman, 1971).

Shape

The picture of a woman is portrayed seated and she looks as to be on the dark pillar. On the back side, there is a vast landscape facing the mountains with ice, winding paths and a bridge to give the image of a human presence. The painter picture presents a three dimension image as the portrait is facing in front and the same time it is facing right-hand side, the background can also be viewed very well (Feldman, 1971).

Volume

The painter has used more than three-quarter of the page or the surface where the image has been painted on (Feldman, 1971).

Composition

The painter has used the angled composition when drawing the portrait in order to give the portrait a likeness of a human being (Feldman, 1971).

Drawing

Drawing is a form of art where a person uses the instrument like pen and ink, marker paper, pencils, Chalk, and makes visible marks on the surface in order to come up with a picture. This method is cheap and commonly used. Following is an example of a drawing (Rawson, 1969).

Rembrandt – A – Lion – Lying – Down – 207063

This is a drawing drawn by Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn and its’ located in Louvre, Paris. It was created between 1650 and 1652 (Underwood, 2003).

Elements

When the drawing the drawer has to incorporate the following element to make sure that drawings give fair presentation of art, the following are some of the element Rembrandt Harmenszoon have applied:

Line

The artist has used both thin and thick black lines as it is one of the primary elements of drawings. He has used them to separate one area of the picture on drawing surface from another one. A line is used to partition different areas. Light and dark lines have been used to make the drawing more attractive (Ruskin, 1857).

Shape

After the first line is drawn a certain shape is gotten, in our drawing the artist has already come up with a shape closely of that of a lion. A shape can be as simple as any two common lines surrounded on white paper (Ruskin, 1857).

The whole drawing.

This is the picture in mind of the artist before even making any mark. An artist has to consider the space and surface required by the whole picture. The head and the tail of the lion have to be considered before anything else so that not to cut the paper before even completing required surface (Ruskin, 1857).

Light and shadow

The picture of the lion looks so realistic as the drawer has incorporated the real world as the image reflects the shadow and the surface the lion is lying on. The picture of a lion shows some black marks on the face to show the eyes (Ruskin, 1857).

Proportion and perspective.

Proportion represents the size whereas the perspective is said to be an illusion. In our picture, by looking to it our lion has hair around the neck implying it’s a lion, not lioness and also have strong back legs and the long tail which are the characteristics of a lion. The artist has also used a specific color which is brown which is the common color of the lion and also he has used the brownish background which is the color of savanna land where lion stays (Ruskin, 1857).

Comparison between painting and drawing

Similarities

Both painting and drawings are the forms of art (Vaill, 1989). Both types of arts have been practiced for many decades or years. Both forms of arts are individual artwork. Both involve the use of a material to create marks on a given surface.

If someone needs to create an art by painting or drawing, he or she can start with either of the ones. Drawings need little equipment’s to start with hand and eye coordinating. If one need to make a realistic representation it can take a bit of time to accomplish. Painting incorporates more expense and materials but real expectations of nice work.

Differences

Drawings and painting are kind of arts with many differences for example as known by many drawing is a basic step of painting but on the contrary, painting is not a basis of drawings. It is better to know that drawing is made up of lines and shades. Drawings are made of different types of drawings, shade and object used. A person who does this job this job of painting is called an artist. In drawings, we can use turpentine oil, wherein painting crayons and pencil will be used. Drawings do not require any time to dry. Drawings by pencil can be rubbed very easily. In drawings, you cannot use brushes we need to incorporate scale or any other instrument for measures.

The painting has components like colors and designs. We have the painting was done on canvas, oil painting, watercolor and much more. Painting requires enough time to dry and most painting cannot be erased easily. When painting one requires a different kind of brushes and different bristles according to with paint the painter has. A person who does the job of painting is called a painter. In the market, the painting work has more value in the market as compared by that of drawing. The Painting materials are more expensive that pencils and charcoal used for drawing.

Painting uses paint and brushes or any other useful tool but the major ingredient is paint which is done on paper, cardboard or any other surface. Whereas drawing uses every kind of materials to form shades, lines to create images like pencils, charcoal, among others (Bambach, 1999).

In most cases drawing act as a basis of painting , most painters are drawers as the picture to be painted need to sketched first but all drawers are not painters as in painting requires expertise (Bambach, 1999).
