Discussion Board 1 OBST520 INSTRUCTIONS AND QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED

Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will read articles associated with each Discussion Board Forum and answer the questions found in the corresponding instructions for his or her thread. The student will post a thread interacting in a critical, but collegial manner with the associated article.

INTERPRETING PROVERBS

Read the article “Interpreting Proverbs” by Dr. Robert V. McCabe.  Based on the hermeneutical principles of the article, complete the following four assignments.
The assignments should meet Turabian format. Discussion board assignments are to be thoughtful and analytical. A discussion board is not an email or a blog. The discussion board should meet graduate-level standards for writing and research.  In your post, provide an outline that represents parts 1-3.  The outline should provide a separate numerical for each example. This provides a format for the professor to be able to grade each component

Example: Part 1: Intensification of Proverbs
    1
    2
    3, etc.
    Part 2: Contrast in Proverbs
    1
    2, etc.

Part 1: Intensification in Proverbs
Read Proverbs 2.  Identify 10 examples of intensification and write a short paragraph to explain how Solomon used intensification in each verse (one paragraph for each example).
Example:
Proverbs 2:1 The first line exhorts the son (reader) to receive the words. The intensification is seen in that “receive” is elevated to “treasure”, and the words are defined more clearly as “my commands” which must be internalized.

Part 2: Contrast in Proverbs
Read Proverbs 10: Identify 10 examples of “contrast” and write a short paragraph to explain how Solomon used contrast in each verse (one paragraph for each example).
Example:
Proverbs 10:25 The first line states that a “whirlwind” (troubles in life) will cause the wicked to be “no more” (destroyed). The second line states that the righteous has an everlasting foundation which will keep them through the trials of life.  The contrast is between two lifestyles and two outcomes.

Part 3: Descriptive and Prescriptive Proverbs
Read Proverbs 23: Select 5 paragraphs in this chapter. Paragraphs are usually marked in a translation by a bold number or indentation. Review the paragraphs based on the definitions that are provided in Dr. McCabe’s article. Write a short paragraph on the descriptive and prescriptive aspects of each paragraph.
Example:
The first two lines of Proverbs 23:24 describe the joy and gladness that a father experiences when he has a righteous and wise son. The next two lines of Proverbs 23:25 are prescriptive as the reader is commanded to make his parents glad and happy because he fulfills the description of the first two lines, i.e. he lives a righteous and wise life.

NOTE: Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, you will read articles associated with each Discussion Board Forum and answer the questions found in the corresponding instructions for your thread. You will post a thread of 400–600 words interacting in a critical, but collegial manner with the associated article.
