Taking Anecdotal Notes and Objective Observation



One of the most important jobs early childhood teachers have is to build brain synapses. Did you know that children develop all of those synapses by age 5? So, in the first 2000 days of their lives, those are the days they spend with you, early childhood teachers and caregivers set the stage for the child’s life success. That is a huge responsibility and honor to know your impact is so great.



What does that have to do with anecdotal notes and observation? If you don’t observe the children how do you know what they know, what interests they have and answer questions a caregiver may have about their child at school? You probably can answer some questions but could you be more confident if you had notes about their child? Yes!

Now that you have learned the techniques, let’s practice. Follow the link below do a 2-4 sentence anecdotal note about a child in the video below. Post your note in the forum titled anecdotal notes practice and give two peers feedback on their notes. This activity will be graded based on completion of anecdotal note and responses to classmate’s anecdotal notes.
