Paper Instructions;

  1. How do you think your gender is connected to your sexuality? Do you think that your sexuality has been shaped by your cultural and ethnic background? What are your responses to some of the issues listed above?

    2. Does the ethos of the sexual athlete apply to your own circumstances, i.e. have or do you still feel the pressure to be a sexual athlete or do you see evidence of this kind of attitude and behavior around you? Do you agree with Don Sabo that many men have been socialized to treat sex like a sport, devalue love and intimacy, and treat women as expendable sexual objects? Do you think that Sabo is right to suggest that young people today are less susceptible to the pressure to be a sexual athlete, and if so, what are your models for good relationships? What do you think of the “PUA” or “pick-up artist” movement—do you think it is gaining cultural influence among men or do you think it is mostly a fringe phenomenon?

    3.Does Dominika Bednarski’s essay help you to better understand some of the struggles of disabled queer people? Her experience casts light on a subject mentioned last week—that sexual behavior, sexual orientation, and gender do not always align in predictable patterns. What do you think of how she characterizes the fluidity and changeability of her own sexual desires?

    4. If you identify as LGBT and/or are a part of a racially or ethnically marginalized group, have you experienced the kinds of multiple marginalization Paula Rust describes? If not, do Rust’s description of the interactions between racism and heterosexism enhance your understanding of intersecting social identities and forms of oppression? What do you make of the “burden of representation” that ethnic and racially-marked individuals are made to bear?
