Review Tips for Critical Reading. Select an empirical research article of your own choosing and answer the following questions. It is suggested to use an article relevant to your literature review topic.

Questions to consider for critical reading

What is the author’s purpose for writing this paper/ conducting this research?
What are the main points of this text (in your own words)?
What relevant information is included in the literature review?
Is a particular bias or theoretical framework apparent? Can you tell what 'school of thought' the author belongs to?
Can you work out the steps of the argument being presented? Has the author(s) explained the results in a clear and succinct way? Do all the steps follow logically?
What are the major findings presented in the paper?
Are all conclusions backed up by evidence? Could a different conclusion be drawn from the argument being presented? Has the author jumped to a conclusion about anything or made assumptions that are not backed up by evidence?
Do you agree or disagree with the author? Why?
What connections do you see between this and other texts?
Where does it differ from other texts on the same subject?
What are the wider implications——for you, for the discipline?
