Paper Instructions:

  1. Let’s say that you just found out that one of your parents has Huntington’s disease (HD). Based on your genetic background you know that you have a 50% chance of developing the disease yourself. Think about how you would decide whether to have genetic testing done.

After watching the movie “Cracking Your Genetic Code” (link found on the Learning Activities and Assessment page) begin posting to the discussion thread regarding your thoughts on discovering that you may have the mutation for HD.

    Discuss the following questions:

    2. Will this influence your future behavior? Would you become more frivolous, for example, or would you prefer to not know and live your life as if you would have without this knowledge?

    3. Will this influence your decision to have children, and if you decide to have children would you want to have them tested?

    4. Would your answers change if the disease in question was a mental disorder such as Schizophrenia? Why or why not?  What about a physically degenerative disease such as Multiple Sclerosis?

    5. Who should have access to this information? Family?  Doctors?  Employers? Insurance companies?
