Nurses in my clinic are not formally trained when orienting on the unit on breastfeeding. unless you attend a outside breastfeeding education course. Many New nurses whether new graduate or transfers to our clinic do not have the proper knowledge to educate new moms or moms to be on breastfeeding. Its said that education should start as soon as possible in prenatal care in order to have a more successful breastfeeding experience. Many times moms have issues with breastfeeding and nurses do not have the basic knowledge to educate them on what to do to trouble shoot. Many times they have to be referred to a lactation counselor but appointments are not easily available. Moms have concerns about infants stools colors,  if they are getting enough milk, how to long to breastfeed, what to do for engorgement, etc.
