Self-evaluation

Self-evaluation

Evaluation is the most effective way for an improvement. Whereby from handbook of speaking, it states that self-evaluation can improve the quality of our speech significantly. Thus the purpose of this easy is to evaluate myself in the six categories of speaking, which are; introduction, structure, audience centered content, collusion, and citations. Those categories can be understood as the critical point of every aspect of speaking. Therefore, I am being able to learn and improved my speech by using the perspective of an audience who watch your speech.

During the introduction, there are 5 main points. My attention- catching statement wasn't that successful because i went through it too quickly. As an audience of coms 130, I feel my attention- catching statement was weak if I just analyzed two of the key words of my speech, which are “film” and “visual reality”. The speaker credibility also wasn’t established that well since I didn’t present any of credible statement. My relevance was simple and but not that efficient, because of my week attention- catching statement. Also since my audience group is between 18-30 years, I believe most of them know what is a film and VR, which also makes my relevance and attention gather to be weak. However, it was pretty relevance since I briefly example this two key words. In 34-36 second I this I have establish my thesis pretty clear after I example the relevance between film and VR. However, the thesis has been caught to close from the relevance so I believe some audience might be confused about whether it is a thesis statement or a relevance. In the preview that I establish in 48 second I believe it was pretty clear and attractive, where I have use a strategically figure of speech. For example the word “production” and “perception” can be understood as alliteration strategy and that makes it attractive as a preview. In overall, the time length of my introduction is pretty good which was less than a minutes but there are still component the worth for further development.

The organization of my entire speech has a topical division where I have organized the speech in such a way that it has the main topic with some sub-topics and several examples that make the audience to understand what I am talking about. I have analyzed my thesis in three main point; production, perception, and people’s responses. Those three points are 3 different perceptive that supports my thesis statement. My identifiable of main point are pretty clear, since during the 48 second. I have used both of my power point and alliteration strategy to present my three main points. The transection it the weak part of my speech. According to my speech, I presented a weak transection since I barely have a good summary of my previous idea and thus enabling me to exchange and introduce my new idea. The speech is divided chronologically as I have a time sequence where time is an important factor in my speech as it enabled me to be brief but then straight to the point.  This ensured that I did not spend much time on one point. In developing my ideas I have widely used statements that enable the audience to know the kind of idea that I want to put across. After introduction of my ideas that’s when I now support all my ideas and I give one example per each main idea that helps to relate to the idea that I am supporting. However, after supporting my ideas I have not been able to finalize my ideas well as I fail to summarize my ideas with a small conclusion part.

Audience is an important component in any speech hence in making a speech one has to ensure that they are audible enough and exchange of information is effective. In my case, I have greatly been able to develop my ideas using evidences that enabled the audience to follow me to the end of the speech.

Using of some of the reality examples that act as evidence such as in the 2.20 minutes, the giving of the example of blood from the actor in an action film is usually viewed through a VR is quite a relevant example as well as evidence and this makes it more interesting for the audience to follow keenly as they can relate well to it. The same example is relatively informative as it informs the audience on the facts about the uses of VR. These kinds of examples that i used are quite appropriate and relevant to the audience as it enables them to be more informed about VR. However, my English language is not eloquent which made it even harder for the audience to really get what I was saying. I was not that fluent in English and I would stammer at some point thus making me even more anxious. For instance in the1.40 minutes, I stammered. I also was not audible enough and that made my audience especially those at the back to have problem in hearing what I was saying. I really was effective in exchanging my information and it was more of informative rather than persuasive.

Listening to my speech I have learnt so much from it as it has enabled me to identify some of the strong qualities in communicating my information and the weak qualities that I need to work on. I have learnt on the important components of speech making which makes a speech effective. Introduction according to me is one of the important components that enable one to introduce whatever he/she is talking about. It is the introduction part that determines the attyitude3 of the audience as they are looking forward to listening to your entire speech. I have also learnt that proper designing of the speech and incorporation with a presentation I quite important in making an effective speech.

This is where one strategically plans on the objectives of the speech and one organizes the speech basing on these objectives for instance if the objective is to inform one will organizing the speech in such a way that it informs rather than persuading.

I have also learnt that as one establishes the objectives, it is also important to prepare evidences that support each objective and visual aids are also relevant in making the information clearer as it emphasizes more and illustrates the ideas in a far better way than words. While establishing the objectives I have learnt that it is quite significant to establish them basing on the audience needs as well as expectations which must be met within the relaying of the speech. I have also learnt that the use of gestures is important while giving out a speech this involves the use of hands and body language that enables in relaying the information to the audience and this as well enables one to relax while giving out the speech.

Some of my strengths as identified from the speech are the organizational development that enables me to organize all my ideas in a proper way hence ensuring that my speech is effective. Strength is the fact that I effectively develop my ideas by designing the important topics and supporting those ideas with relevant examples that informs the audience efficiently.  However, I have some weaknesses that I have to work on to ensure that my speeches are better and effective.  Audibility is one of weakness and this makes it difficult for the audience to hear what I am saying and this may result to me losing them. Therefore I have to work on my audibility and ensure that I am audible enough so that every audience may benefit from my speech. Transecting is another weakness as I fail to use words that are connectors that may enable the exchange of information effectively. This therefore results to hanging ideas and this may result to failure in achieving the objectives of the speech.

Lack of eye to eye contact is another weakness that affects my public speech as it is important to keep an eye contact with the audience. I have engaged in giving more speeches to several groups that will enhance me to continually improve on my weaknesses. Giving out of public speech will enhance me even when I will be a manager in future as I will be able to give out speech to in meetings with directors and to employees.
