’The Secret Rules of the Drone War

                Editorial

            Part 1

The selected article is ‘’The Secret Rules of the Drone War’’ by Eric Hanson. Hanson holds that president Obama and his government are utilizing secret strategies and guidelines in fighting counterterrorism and that his government is not transparent about the issue (Hanson, 1). In the beginning of this month, the nation’s administration revealed the total numbered of individuals who have lost their lives since 2009 in strikes that are related to counterterrorism. Hanson holds that the report held very little information about the incidences and little was additionally revealed about the secret drone campaign that the government plans on utilizing (Hanson, 1).  Based on my opinion the offered information was adequate because in order to reduce the risks of individuals dying in counterterrorism strikes secretive measures and campaigns needs to be utilized.   This is supported by the fact that president Obama ordered the government agencies to utilize more strict guidelines by developing better technological strategies in reducing the rate of deaths in areas where America holds no combat declaration (Woods, 186). It is not like he waited for his term end to declare this because the issue was still being developed and proper strategies had not been established. Despite that little was offered to the public the government is characterized by transparency.

            Part 2

The article the secret rules of drone war done by Hanson is characterized with errors. This is because the information is not based on facts but on assumption. The fact that he states that the government has no transparency because the little report was revealed about the death of individuals in counterterrorism strikes is not well rooted.  President Obama raised the issue during this period because it was the right time and not because his term is coming to an end soon.  Transparency can be seen by the fact that he requested that the agencies developed better strategies to ensure that innocent individuals do not die in non-combated nations.  The article, therefore, fails to identify clearly why the administration has no transparency in regard to the issue despite the minimal information that was offered.  The article did not establish the main reason that resulted in the reporting by the government and why some information was not released.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Persuasive Appeals

            Response 1

An announcement encouraging students to avoid binge drinking

The persuasive appeal is effective and useful in the creation of awareness. This makes it advantageous because it acts as a form of communication where individuals are fully aware of the negative activity that is taking place.  However, the appeal is disadvantageous because it can be strongly impersonal as the delivered message is more personalized thus challenging the appeals of the masses. The message thus touches individuals at personal levels rather intended.   This may thus result in I false interpretation because of the inaccurate vision that is developed by the message.  The message may, therefore, mislead the perception of individuals as it is not well supported. The appeal is, therefore, disadvantageous because it may result to personal offenses to the individuals who are involved in the act.

Response 2

A fund-raising brochure for a day care center to be distributed in a church, synagogues, or mosque

The appeal may be advantageous as it will distribute information to a wider range of individuals. This will, therefore, increase the efficiency of the appeal since communication is more effective.  However, the appeal may be disadvantageous because it may not reach the intended audiences and the message deliverance may not be reliable because of its inaccuracy.  The appeal may, therefore, be taken for granted because of lack of emphasis on the designed message thus placing the persuasive appeal at a disadvantage.
