Historical Article Review Essay
What is a review essay?
A review essay examines the structure, framework, sources, and argument of an historical
article or book. For this class, you will be writing a review over an article of your choosing. Each
article has been taken from an historical journal from JSTOR, a database for academic journal
articles. A review essay should provide analysis of the article being reviewed and determine
where it fits in the larger historical conversation of a particular topic.
How to Read an Article:
After you have chosen your article and claimed it on the discussion board, you should
begin reading. There are strategies that you can use while reading to make the writing process
much easier. As you read, you want to annotate each paragraph in the article to ensure that you
understand the overall argument being made. More importantly, however, you should come up
with a system of color-coding or marking the article to designate specific pieces that you will
want to address in your essay. For example, I like to place a star next to the thesis of the article,
or the overall argument. I might underline specific examples. As you read, you should be
identifying the argument, the framework that the author uses, the structure and approach to the
article, and the content covered. You should also be sure to examine the type of sources used.
Structuring Your Essay:
For a review essay, you want to avoid simply summarizing the article. Therefore, you
should avoid structuring your essay in a beginning-middle-end fashion. Rather, you should
choose aspects of the essay to focus on for each paragraph – argument, framework,
historiography, sources, overall analysis. As a rule of thumb, you should have at least one
reference for each paragraph. This can be in the form of an in-text citation or a footnote but
should always be in Chicago or APA format. Use the material from the article to draw
conclusions, but when you do, make sure you cite which page you pulled that piece of
information from in the article.
Requirements:
• Follow Chicago or APA guidelines
o APA Format
o Chicago Format
o Note: Do not use a citation generator
• Times New Roman, 12-point font, double-spaced
• Include the title of the reviewed article at the top
• 500 words (points will not be taken off if you have between 480 and 520 words –
not including the heading)
• Follow the guidelines listed above and in the syllabus. Use these resources as a
rough rubric.
