BONSAI, ‘tray planting’,  or PENJING are miniature living landscapes that come from Japanese and Chinese garden design styles.  Rather than use 'borrowed scenery' to create larger gardens, these can focus on a single item shaped to a particular expression through cultivation practices.  A much finer art form than the contemporary mixed color bowls or cactus and succulent gardens of western culture.
