Rational Choice Theory

Questions and Topics We Can Help You To Answer:
Paper Instructions:

Thinking about cultural and social awareness, choose one or more of the criminological theories discussed in the learning activities for this module. Then explain in a short essay (no more than 400 words nor less than 100), how the theorist(s) came to develop the theory of criminal behavior based upon their limited view of other cultures or societies or individuals from those cultures and societies. When constructing this essay, think about the time the theory was developed and what conditions or assumptions may or may not have existed at the time.

Let me give you an example to clarify. In the Chicago School, Shaw and McKay in 1942 theorized that higher levels of crime and the government’s inability to control the population were both occurring in the zone of the city that they termed the transition zone. They described that this transition zone had a large percentage of minority and immigrant populations. Looking at this theory through a cultural and social awareness lens leads one to wonder: Couldn’t it be possible that the individuals who were populating this transition zone did not understand or were victims of discriminatory governmental control in 1942 and therefore perceived to be criminal or “difficult to control”? In other words, was the behavior of these individuals actually criminal or merely social change?
