TOPIC: The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports that there is only 12 years left to massively cut emissions in order to prevent a 2-degree rise in global average temperatures. While individuals can change their behaviours, individuals can only do so much. Only 100 companies are responsible for 71% of all emissions in the world and as few as 15 of the worlds largest cargo ships account for as much pollution as all the cars in the world combined. How might an economic geographer think about equity and climate justice? In what ways do individuals have power to affect climate change? In what ways might climate change produce environmental racism?

Method:
Choose a topic from the research paper assignment description. Find 4 journal articles and 4 long form newspaper or magazine articles that are not on this syllabus. For each article, write a short 150 - 250 word summary. Use the prompts in the reading responses for guidance.

There should be an introduction that outlines the topic chosen. This should present at least two research questions that will guide the research paper, explain how and where these articles were found and why these articles were selected for this assignment. A strong introduction will also include a preliminary thesis statement for the final paper.

There should be a concluding paragraph that summarizes patterns and relationships across the articles. This should include how this collection of articles related to each other, what makes them different, how scholarly research differs from the popular press. Strong papers will present preliminary findings.
