This assignment requires you to demonstrate that you have located and begun to analyze the piece of visual text that you will be using for the Visual Analysis Essay. This assignment has multiple stages, and you will need to complete both.

What is important about the image? Be sure to explain how certain details have led you to a specific interpretation of the image. Provide a working thesis statement in the proposal.

Draft instructions:
Upload the draft of your Visual Analysis Essay. Write TWO questions about the draft that will help me to direct my comments. Be specific. Ask about a particular concern. Please do not write: "Is this okay?" or "What grade would this get?" The types of questions to ask include those about a specific grammar concern or a particular writing/organization issue (thesis, conclusion, so on).

Final draft instructions:
For this assignment, you will analyze the content and design of a piece of visual rhetoric. You are free to choose your own image to analyze, but be sure that you choose an image that was purposefully designed to express a specific message. These will be limited to either a professional photograph or work of art found through ARTSTOR (use the WC database). I suggest selecting from one of the museum collections (like the Art Institute of Chicago). Your final draft should include a copy of the image. In selecting an image, be sure to limit your selection to the list of Famous Artists found in the supporting information for this unit:

Your overall goal in this paper is to construct and support a thesis that analyzes and evaluates how well your piece of visual rhetoric accomplishes its purpose. In order to do this, your paper should place your image in context for your intended readers, identify claims, explain why the appeals in the image are or are not persuasive, and comment on any cultural values the image addresses, criticizes, or advocates. Your goal is to convince your intended readers to take seriously your "reading” of the image.
Be mindful of the following as you draft:

Make a claim about the what the image is presenting as argument.
Your thesis statement should be stated clearly and must explain the analysis of the image that will be presented.
Each paragraph should relate to the thesis statement (review information about transitions)
Be sure to discuss the audience of the image.
If there is text in the image, address the language used and analyze its effect on the overall argument presented by the image.
Include enough explanation in each paragraph for the reader to understand your point (reveiw the 1-2-3 Method).
The thesis and concluding paragraph need to be connected with a logical connection.
The examples you use need to have a clear "so what?" in their explanation.
Basic Requirements: 750 words min., MLA format, Times New Roman, 12 point font, double spaced, include Works Cited page with each draft, write in third person, follow academic writing guidelines, do not use block format, focus on analyzing the sources and then synthesizing them with each other and your own voice
