The strange case Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Questions and Topics We Can Help You To Answer:
Paper Instructions:

In your previous posts, we discussed how Hyde represented the particular fears and desires of Victorian England.  But the Jekyll/Hyde story has persisted for almost 150 years since this novella was published.  I'd like you to think about the ways that it has been adapted to different times and different cultures.  What is universal about this story?  In other words, why does it still speak to us?  And what has changed about this story?  How are our fears and desires changed, and how has the story changed to respond to those fears and desires?
To help you think about this question, I've posted a collection of images of Mr. Hyde from various films over the years.  As you look at how depictions of Hyde have changed, think about what he might represent--how Jekyll's fears and desires may reflect the readers'/viewers' fears and desires and how those things have changed over time.
