Mexican regionalism

Mexican regionalism

During the post-colonial era Mexico experienced a period of regionalism from the year 1821 to 1850, people thought of issues such as politics in terms of their, villages, town and regions. The citizen’s concerns were on how to promote their local economy. They did this due to the risk of uncertainties and to ensure the safety of their transactions. The people continuously refused the central government and outsiders to interfere with their daily lives. Also the administrative disorder that followed after Mexico’s independence contributed to regionalism. This regionalism discouraged the efforts of politicians to create a national community in the 19th century. It also shaped the independence struggle of Mexico.

This period was characterized by social disorder and economic crisis. Changes of government happened regularly, the military had taken over the political scenes of the country, they were in charge of over throwing governments. Lack of good governance gave rise to social disorder that resulted to formation of gangsters group and led to an increase in crime in central Mexico. The economy and standards of living of Mexico continued to deteriorate despite the fact that Mexico was an independent country. As a result of this turbulence Mexico lacked peace and became poor.

Mexico felt the need to politically reconstruct its government so as to recover from the economic setbacks that had been caused by the series of turbulent events that had taken place in the country. The war taking place in Europe had also contributed to the fall of Mexican economy since an amount of 300 million pesos had been exported to Europe to fund the Napoleonic war. It took Mexico half a century to recover the cash loss. Due to the weakness of the central government, each state and territory acquired their own strength to carry out its production and trade. This characteristic of the Mexican economy lasted through out the 19th century. Until communication and transportation were revolutionized by development of railway.
