 Media Literacy

Question1

Media literacy refers to the access, analysis, evaluation, and creation of media in a variety of forms. It helps in the understanding of different types of media. Critical media literacy refers to the academic response that aids in the expansion of notions of literacy to give room for different forms of mass communication, popular culture, and recent technology. Media literacy provides the platform for the critical analysis of the relationship between information, audience, media, and power. Media literacy supports sharing of different messages that will empower and impact audiences socially on issues affecting them directly and indirectly (Jared, 2016).

Question2

The definition of power explanation: when one has power, they can control, prevent or cause an action to happen. One has no duties that limit to specific responsibilities. Therefore, people who have power can define the world of other people around them. Power struggle, in the media, tries to explain the context in which the media production occurs and its influence on the media. The environment in which the media company exists will give it an edge over its competitors. If there are more than two groups in one environment (be it an environment based on imperials heteronormativity or racism), there will be competition for both material resources and immaterial resources (Jared, 2016).

Question3

President Donald Trump made an announcement on Thursday that would see the department of health and human services declare the opioid crisis an emergency. This actually means that the federal government will not channel any federal funds to address the opioid crisis, which has caused the loss of 64000 American in 2016.A psychiatrist, Professor Carl Hart was interviewed .He claimed that people were not dying because of opioids but because of ignorance. He went to explain further that the deaths are a major concern, but their causes vary as some may have died as a result of combining the opioid with other depressants. This story uses agenda setting concept to disseminate information (Democracy Now, 2017).

Tensions are at an all-time high between North Korea and America. Mattis’s secretary of defense, visited Asia for a week. The purpose of the visit was to find a diplomatic resolution to the standoff between US and North Korea. The US maintain its stance that it would not allow North Korea to make nuclear weapons. Congressional Democrats pushed for a legislation that would protect North Korea from any strikes from the USA. Framing is the concept used in this story as it brings out relevant current issues into the open for them to get attention (Democracy Now, 2017).

The federal government released thousands of former CIA and   FBI secret files on the assassination of president John.F.Kenedy in 1963.Historians are analyzing the documents. The documents also contain multiple plots by the CIA to assassinate Cuban leader Fidel Castro. This plot would be carried out by mobsters who would use a pill. Other parts of the files were not released. Additional records of a similar nature will be released in April. This information has been spread through the concept of gatekeeping as it filters most of its information. This idea gives room for the audience that will receive the information to form their own perspective (Democracy Now, 2017).

 Question5

Media is usually portrayed as being synonymous with the technology it uses to convey its message but media are the ideologies that the audience get from devices such as television, movies, newspapers, blogs and even billboards posters (Jared, 2016).From my own media diet, the definition of media can be explained as messages that rely on communication channels to spread to the different audience. From this explanation, media is inclusive of direct mail, telephone and narrowcasting media such as magazines. This definition combines the communication channel and the ideology together. For example, newspapers are medium as they serve the sole purpose of conveying messages. Broadcasting corporation is media as they serve the sole purpose of sending messages through their technologies. Media helps the society to appreciate different perspectives and views through their platforms. (Potter, 2014).

Question 5

Board of directors is made up of a group of individuals who are chosen by owners of a company or corporation to promote their interests through running of the company. In most legal jurisdictions board members, have specific duties such as being trustees. In other words, they can be used to benefit other people directly. The board also maintains control and oversight of everything that goes on in the company. Members of different boards may end upon on other boards creating an interlock through their political, economic and social interests. When board members come from two or more similar firms, they can form an oligopoly and control the decisions and set policies that favor their own interests and concerns (Jared, 2016). Due to the influence of oligopoly media has emerged to be a powerful tool for political propaganda. Political propaganda has resulted to censoring of sources of information by corporations for their own gain. Companies are not concerned about the accuracy of what is being reported but with manipulation of the media consumers in order to gain favor and legitimacy. Political debates and political elections. The corporations tend to take side of the candidate they support and who seems to favor their interests. For example, a  corporation that owns a media outlet and an also owns a manufacturing company that makes weapons will not support a  presidential candidate that pushes through legislations laws that would make ban selling of weapons abroad. However, as media consumers, there should be an outrage that content in the media is a manipulation of a few large corporations. The lack of diversity in the media can be solely blamed on the media owners. Diverse views can shape people ideology. And empower them to male more wise decisions (Potter, 2014).

According to theyrule.net, CBS corporation board has members from oracle corporation, North Grumman Corporation, Morgan Stanley, Aecom, Liberty Mutual, Viacom Inc., the Travelers Company and Bank of America Corporation. Morgan Stanley Corporation and Oracle Corporation have the same board of members in The Walt Disney company board. Viacom has five board members in CBS corporation; Charles E Phillips Jr, Blythe J McGavin, Shai Redstone, Frederic Salerno And Summer M Redstone. Some of the board members sit on the board of Bank of America too. This forms an oligopoly which can then manipulate the media and Starbucks. This creates an interconnection that can be used to align interests. The board members at CBS Corporation sit on other boards such as Bank of America. This connection shows that the directors can easily sway decisions to their convenience as they have the power to do so.

Human resource social platform policies

Technology is one of the major advancements that have created an impact in many fields of an organization. Such advancements have both advantages and disadvantages which ought to be looked into to prevent employees and employers from using the devices and network access to harm other colleagues. The capability to access and share information with friends on a social platform should always be kept clean and guidelines followed. Social media is one of the major platforms where a person can either be made or ruined for the rest of their lives (Elmaghraby & Losavio, 2014). In the workplace, employees should always observe what kind of information they are spreading since such information could land an employee jobless and even jail time. Maintaining a good image of the company is vital. Professional ethics require that employees do not use the name of the organization to their advantage but should use it for the benefit of the members and the organization in general.

Company vital data should not be shared over the internet and violating such rules could lead to dismissal of the involved party. Harassment is also a key topic in the workplace. Individuals should not harass each other either on the basis of gender, age, religion or any other means (Aral et al., 2013). Individuals especially those in the information technology department should refrain from sharing and allowing access by unauthorized persons into organization network. Sharing organization data on social media could harm the organization and even lead to the closure of the business meaning employees should observe privacy with organization data at all times. Failure to follow such guidelines will amount to a violation of the company rules and regulations and this can cause the involved members be dismissed with immediate effect including being prosecuted.

Discussion

PowerPoint is evil and its does not fulfill its role as a presentation tool. In fact, it is not used as a creative tool but people have over-relied on PowerPoint to derive half-formed information (Tufte, 2003). I believe that PowerPoint is associated with dark side as it does not produce clear message but rather people receive preconceived information. The use of headings and bullets stultify the ability to understand the real meaning of the subject. Designed in various occupations such as public relation and industries   use power point for data analysis, and presentation is  a big challenge in  that the data is not  an ‘evidence presentation’ and thus,  PowerPoint corrupts (Tufte, 2003). In economic arena, PowerPoint has produced smirk commercialism where presenters display sales presentation. The big problem with sales pitches is that they contain wrong message and outdated information based on unconsidered needs and ignores company’s credentials (Tufte, 2003).

Generally, I agree with Tufte’s ideas that PowerPoint is evil in that people receive summarized ideas through bullet and this affects their thinking. A point to note is that PowerPoint should not be used to provide audiences with information but rather it is a tool where teachers and managers can use to derive materials in a quick way and present them to the audience. PowerPoint distorts important message and this can lead to societal problems in that people do not reflect on evidence and do get the opportunity for critical thinking (Tufte, 2003).  Note that  the PowerPoint slides  denies people the opportunity to understand   the root cause of  some complex issues  and becomes weak in making decisions. It is true that presenters  ignores the relevance of the content and neglects interaction.  It is important to value the audience in order to create a room for asking questions and understand the topic deeply (Tufte, 2003).  In all settings such as school, business and political arena, people need to understand the context through interacting, comparing information using evidence and make conclusion.

Degrading black caricatures in media

Degrading black caricatures have affected African-American psychologically , their cultural development and misunderstanding in the media which in turn have had impact on the social , economic and political development of the communities in US , with such images spreading worldwide. The various ant-black caricatures have been given various characteristics which have displayed African-Americans in the media in ways that may be considered insulting. The coon comes out as the one these anti-back caricatures that were very insulting, with the name raccoon itself sounding very dehumanizing. It portrayed traits of a lazy and idle buffoon that is constantly idle and easily frightened.  Stepin Fetchin is a prototypical movie where slow-walking and slow-talking natures portrays very demeaning and foolish individual (Bogle, 8). Before the death of the coon, it was developed to show very clear effort to degrade among other black stereotypes. The coons were presented as unaccountable niggers with their craziness and laziness making them unreliable creatures worth only for stealing chickens, eating watermelons and then destroying English language (Bogle, 8).  The caricature was the making of American slavery where salve masters provided such descriptions for the slaves where they viewed them as wanting pushing trifling and ever servants.  The coon characters in Fetchit were demeaned and abused verbally and physically by the white ones. For African American, the Stepin Fetchit continue to indicate a black man used to bowing.

Mammy caricature is a racial representation of African American females and since slavery, the image severed various interests, including economic, social and political, for the mainstream American whites. The caricature was made to represent black women slaves as being happy; with loyal servitude and hearty laughter as proof that slavery was being portrayed as humanizing. Of major effect is how the American film seemed to rationalize the character of Mammy, who represented as black, ugly, old and obese woman with no sexual appeal. The aim was to enforce the perception of the African American woman as being of lower class socially so that a normal white man could not choose her for a wife over a white woman. The rationalization of this character can be seen in the actresses such as Hattie McDaniel, who despite being gifted, impressed by putting more depth into the mammy character. Even when criticized by the black community as perpetuating this caricature , she found nothing wrong with it as long as she made 700 dollars weekly play the maid rather than making the same amount as an actual maid, (Bogle ,82).  The creation of such perception aimed at creating acceptance of the African-American woman as being inferior, by demeaning her character in the media. The rationalization of this idea would work well in desensitizing of the demeaning of African American women in the film and hence, in real life. Tom caricature depicts African American women as weak people, faithful and happy to be servants.  He is not a threat to the white but psychologically depends on the master for approval. In the movies he is subjected to torture through flogging, harassment and insults but still do not challenges their masters and thereby endearing themselves to the audience who are whites so that they are seen as some kind of heroes( Bogle , 5-6).

Picaninny caricature dominantly represented the African American child in history across many parts of the country.  Black African-American children emerged among the earliest actors as picaninnies in the industry of motion picture (Bogle, 7).  The caricature shows children adorning poor, torn, ragged, oversized clothes and in worse cases they are presented as being almost nude or completely nude. This creates the image that African American children and parents are caring less about modesty or that African American parents do not care about their children. A caring parent would offer decent cloths for his or her children but nudity in expresses a notion that unlike whites who wear good cloths, blacks are not concerned with civilization. Moreover, such nudity presents a problem since it sexualizes he black child with no apparent shame. This widespread showcasing of African American children’s nudity normalizes the vice of sexual objectification and furthermore, a justification that African American culture does not value modesty and while upholding sexual abuse. While a disproportionate large number of black children may be poor, the picaninny caricature implies that all the African American kids are impoverished which is not the case. This could also be related to the perception that African American culture encourages laziness among adults which is represented by the living conditions of the children. In other cases children are shown as hungry so that they steal watermelons and chickens and like animals in the wildness, picaninnies have are forced to fend for themselves.

The impact of degrading caricature of black people in whole of United States is depicted in African American endeavors to offer a different representation from one portrayed in media. The mainstream films and media in United States has used various mythic types to portray African Americans and their culture, which have been wrongly been taken as actual black experience. This has lead to development of African American cultures such as hip-hop culture, with an aim of “keeping it real” , where realness has some special meaning where rappers create their own images while measuring their authenticity by ghetto oriented ideas of “who’s badder’(Ogbar, 156).  The emergence of such culture is an effect of how degrading culture has degraded African Americans across the country and they see a need for authenticity. The African Americans have also found avenues of being political involved where they can raise their issues amidst a perception that they are not civilized. Therefore, cultures such as hip hop revolutions become more real. The image of African American portrayed in film industry can be related to the reactions seen among the hip hop rappers, but the widespread social problems among the black communities cannot be correlated to rap cultures (Ogbar, 156). The way caricatures represents the black people is not reflected in the real social and economic happenings in real world such as more graduates , reduced teenage pregnancies and more political awareness among the black youths.

It’s, therefore, ridiculous to view such people as lazy and passive in the society. This can also be seen in shifting lyrical content due to sociopolitical stressors and the need for improved debates confined in realness (Ogbar, 156).  This is in line with black actors who subverted the various caricatures types and transcending the negative image thereby giving pleasure to all audiences regardless of color. The African Americans have also been resisting Hollywood’s subjective representation of images, where black culture is sold superficially as just a fad. Political boycotts, demonstration and even writing and creation of own images in the film have been used as active resistance of such perceptions.  This has countered depictions especially in science –fiction films such as like E.T’s narration of immigrants and representations of racial panics in reaction to possible future in race relations (Guerrero, 58). The need for a different African-American narrative can be said to have contributed to the emergence of cultures such as hip hop and in order to raise the issue of political and economic inclusivity of the entire American society regardless of color. The degrading caricatures have faced enough opposition due to the degrading of African American culture and social standing not only in United States across the world.

The push for respect and dignity for African American people in a manner different from that portrayed in film industry can be understood as an awakening among the children of past slaves. The prophetic and instinctive indignation of many people across the country, the challenging of degrading massive poverty, police brutality and even urban decay can be viewed as a kind of looking into the past and moving towards the future (Hill, 173).  The civil rights movements started the push for equality even though many people would argue that this did not change the lives of African American much. There is a continuous progress of in terms of economic and social aspects in the nation and together with related debate (Torpey, 172).   This means that the identity issues emerging from the aforesaid caricature are similar to what the African Americans in the past generations were fighting against.

Effectiveness of email

Email is an effective channel for sending this kind of information to all the locations of the shop. Email makes it easier to compose and send a message regardless of where the client is situated and allows for quick feedback on the same.  The email can be discussed and adjusted before the location managers can send to other employees. A major pitfall of Email is that information may be misunderstood in case messages are not properly constructed (Annan-Prah, 2015). This can be avoided if one takes time to review the message before forwarding it to the intended recipient.

Effective internal communication

Problem statement

Having an effective internal communication strategy is important given that internal stakeholders form the core driver of organization. Lack of effective communication with employees can lead to break down of relationships between employees as the major internal stakeholders and management.  They share the vision and goal of an organization and overlooking may lead to reduced engagement, employee dissatisfaction, reduced employee retention and hence reduced productivity. The internal stakeholders are normally the most dedicated in championing the brand of the organization.   Internal communication related directly to the performance of an organization in terms of high quality product and services and financial problem

A strategic and improved plan for internal communication provides a chance building productive relationships between the management and employees and among the employees themselves.  A strategic communication plan involves a program that is well designed to ensure that internal stakeholders are engaged fully and this can lead increased morale, retention and hence, improved productivity.  Effective communication is important to the employees, manager and even the shareholders.   It is an important tool that keeps all of them informed about the operations in an organization, identifying any problems within and improving engagement in looking for solutions to these problems.   Effective communication should ensure that information is presented in a manner that it will actually be useful and can be worked upon for intended purpose (Smith & Mounter, 2008).

Effective internal communication can be achieved through strategic targeting so that a particular message or information is catered to a specified niche audience and this will make the communication process more clear.  This involves considering to whom the information should be sent and this will ensure that any misunderstanding is cleared especially in a team. If some information is meant for specific individuals, allowing everybody to access it is not necessary especially it involves sensitive issues that may affect others.  This allows for the information to be vetted by other the major parties involved before it is shared to other stakeholders.  In addition, the strategic plan should involve making the intention of the communication clear by paying close attention to any metrics relating to whether the stakeholders understand what is meant in such communications (Gambetti, 2012).

An effective communication plan should also involve using the right channels so that information reaches to the receiver in timely manner and intended form. Tools such as intranet sites and posters are necessary to relay information if it is intended for the entire members of an organization. However, where the information to be shared is intended for the specific individuals using platforms such as email, texting and calling can help in maintaining confidentiality of the information and at the same time ensuring that information is delivered on time.  Use if effective communication tools ensure that all the internal stakeholders remained informed so that problems can be reported as they arise and solutions are found through engagement (Gambetti, 2012).

Conclusion

An effective internal communication ensures that all the stakeholders especially employees are engaged in the decision making in an organization.  A strategic communication plan for passage of information within the organization should involve targeting the intended receiver through various communication channels that will deliver information in the intended form and at the right time.

For improved performance in an organization, clarity if information is necessary so that it is well understood. Building relationships within the organization encourages engagement which is an important aspect in employee retention and serving the interests of shareholders.

The Mission Statement

A mission statement refers to a description of the fundamental purpose of an organization in brief by showing the reason why it exists. It offers an explanation in clear and simple terms of the purpose of the reason why the organization was established.  The importance of a mission statement is to articulate the purpose of the organization and the community in which it operates, by describing its present capabilities, client’s focus, operations and even the organizational make-up (Daft, Murphy & Willmott, 2010).  It is necessary to have a mission statement in order to ensure that all members of the organization are on the same page in providing the intended services as a foundation of effective planning.

Writing a mission statement involves an exercise of team building and this shows existing team consensus efforts in an organization. Since a mission statement is part of an organization’s public face, it is used in sensitizing the services provided by the organization and this is why such it is normally included on public platforms such a website. In case of a police department, the mission statement is the core in publicizing its operations and services aimed at maintaining law and order and justice in the community in which it is based. Where there is no mission statement, it is not easy to build a positive public image of an organization in the perception of the stakeholders including the members of the public (Pratt, 2010). Such an image is important because in fosters a cordial relationship especially between law enforcement organizations and community members to whom their services are aimed.

Departments

The police departments that are reviewed in paper include Southfield Police Department, New York Police Department and Cambridge Police Department. The Southfield Police Department mission statement includes a commitment to professional approach in enforcing the law and providing support for the needs of the Southfield community. The statement also highlights the tactics to be employed in providing community-oriented services which comprises of effort to make the department to be trusted so that the community can have confidence in it (Southfield Police Department, 2012). The mission statement succeed in providing the purpose for which the police department exist which is to provide for the community needs and ensure that the law is enforced in this area.

The mission statement also attempts to paints the right image to the public by highlighting their commitment professionalism in law enforcement which is based on equal and fair treatment for all. This highlights the reason behind the existence of this organization in the community and the services it is supposed to provide the community.  It aligns with the department’s goal of having the public confidence in the services provided and ensuring that the expectations of the public are outlined clearly in the statement. The best part if the department’s mission statement is that it highlights how the mission will be accomplished. In relation to this, the statement highlights a continuous comprehensive training, community –focused training and the hiring and retaining quality staff to present the profession (Southfield Police Department, 2012). These aspects show methods that can help in ensuring that the intended purpose of this organization in the community is achieved. However, the mission statement can be improved by including the need to build a relationship with the community since such a provision will create a platform for collaboration and hence improved services.

The mission statement for New York Police Department describes the mission of the organization as improving the quality of life for residents of New York City. The statement highlights the reason for the existence of this organization and the role is supposed to play in the community in which it exists. The public image of the department is also endeared in the statement by highlighting that all citizens will be treated with the compassion, respect and courtesy and maintaining professionalism while providing police services (New York City Police Department, 2016). The commitment for impartial application of the laws while fighting crime through deterring them and in pursuing the criminals is also intended to paint a positive image in the perception of the public members. The statement is aligned with the values of the department that involve a pledge to protect life, preserve peace, minimize fear and ensure law and order is maintained. The best part of this mission statement is that it indicates the need for partnering with the community in law in fulfilling its duties which is an important aspect providing services aimed at these people. For effective provision of services it is important to understand the challenges to be addressed by them and such challenges are best known through building a cordial relationship with target clients (Pratt, 2010). In order to improve the mission statement of the department, the management should include an explanation of the methods to be used in fulfilling the missions. The mission statement can be improved by highlighting the ways in which the mission statement will be enhanced.  In order to evaluate the goals described in the mission statement, there is a need to match the performance of the department with these goals.  This requires the establishment of an evaluation strategy that will link the goals established in the mission statement and the actual performance in terms of law enforcement and safety maintenance. The strategy should also measure the implication of various policies adopted by the department in terms of how the adhere to the set values comprising of impartiality, compassion, integrity and respect for the community members. Bringing Digital to Wimbledon

Issues

What role should communication process play in enhancing Wimbledon Brand Value?

How should Wills use technology – digital media – to expand its market in terms of Wimbledon fans in areas outside traditional base and remain competitive in a global sport market that is aggressive?

Analysis

Wimbledon as a brand has in the past experienced a lot of growth which was aided by the unique grass courts that defined the Championship as being different from other tennis tournaments such as Australian and US open. The improvement on the image has been buoyed by a focus on brand building rather than maximizing on the audience of the Wimbledon tournament. However despite the success of the brand in UK especially for the men’s tournament, there has been sluggish growth both in terms of participants and audience in other major areas in the world especially such as United States.  This is evident in the lack of a title contender for the men’s tournament.  The brand has also been attracting few sponsors as compared to other global tournaments which use ground courts and are more focused on the audience and increase in revenue. The sponsors attracted by the brand have only limited their support to advertisements that shows their sponsorship and this has not helped in wider engagement and hence improvement on the brand. Creation of value for the brand is a major issue, given the unconventional model of this tournament

The use of the digital media has been unmatched by any other form of digital marketing even in large market such as United States.  There is a need to expand the fan base for Wimbledon beyond the traditional UK, Australia and Japan to areas such as India, China and Southeast Asia. The engagement resulting from the use of digital media has not yielded the desired results and this is made difficult by the fact that some elements of Wimbledon Brand are not compatible with use of aggressive commercialization. AELTC still depends on broadcast revenues for the major part of its income which indicates that engagement from digital –led content has not been effective in improving the market share of this tournament. While other major markets are improving their fan base around the world, Wimbledon faces the risk of being left behind if the digital content –led campaign do not build the desired engagement to increase the fan base. Remaining competitive in a sport market that is increasingly aggressive is a major issue for Wimbledon Tournament.  For Wimbledon to remain at par with growth of other major sports in terms of market share it, the digital content has do deliver.

Recommendations

For the communication process to enhance the brand value, the appropriate engagement will have to be achieved. Willis should adopt a communication strategy that focuses on the major stakeholders including the participants, fans and sponsors and which engages individuals. All the communication channels should share a common message that highlights the quality and value of grass court tournament and engage these individuals directly. Once an organization has created an effective brand, its implementation should involve consistent point of contact with the target market (Holtzhausen & Zerfass, 2014).

For the digital media to improve competitiveness of Wimbledon Tournament and its fan base, it has to create enthusiasm and excitement through specifying the personal elements such as talent and victory and doing so though original content. This includes showcasing high-profile players, shining spotlights on fans especially true diehards.  Digital media provides way for organizations to have direct contact with customers by building a strong relationship with a brand and unrivaled audience engagement (Kaufmann, 2015).

Online communication

In the chapter ‘no need to call’, Turkel argues that telephone or else technology has destroyed the real interaction. In other words, technology has led to various developments in the world but it has hindered effective communication. In modern society, teenagers prefer to talk to their friends through instant message rather than phone call (TURKLE, 373). This is a big problem facing communities today since face-to-face communication and physical contacting have been ignored. Both young people and adults use social networks where they feel safe when communication rather than one-on-one conversations. Even though technology makes it easier to communicate, it has ruined the social interaction, increased loneliness and denied people social skills. In digital age, people need to improve the degree of empathy and maintain connection (TURKLE, 374). Technology plays a big role but people should not allow it to split the human relationship.

Focusing on the central ideas, I can agree with the author that in modern world, technology is associated with negative aspects.  It is true that technology or modern tools of communication have diminished the social interaction. In this chapter, it seems like Turkle is persuading the audiences on valuing face-to-face conversation and strengthen connection.  Online communication hinders people from knowing each other. It is important for people to value nonverbal communication such as facial expression, eye contact, tones, body language and more, since this will allow people demonstrate understanding and capture emotions. Online communication is important but people should value face-to-face communication and make it the primary means of communication as well the first choice. Generally, there is a need for a meaningful conversation and this is one way of developing intellectual skills and self-knowledge (TURKLE, 379).

WORTHAM (393) states that in modern world, technology is important as it maintains and strengthens relationship. The author says that she could be able to maintain the relationship between her boyfriends, family and friends through online communication while staying 3,000 miles away. She adds that online communication provides a real satisfaction which surpasses face-to-face communication.  Apps such as Gchat, twitter and Facebook allow people to discuss different things like travel plans and acts as an appetizer waiting for main things to happen.  In fact, online communication is not formal and people feel like they are physically close and have casual conversation (WORTHAM, 397). People who are searching romantic partners are using mobile apps and websites to find the best friends.  Through a credible research and own experience, Wortham affirms that online communication is best for interactions.

I disagree with Wortham argument that Smartphone applications or online communication maintains relationship.Well; online communication is efficient in connecting people as the author is saying but people who stay away from each other need face-to-face communication where they will feel happy and maintain their relationship.  The truth is that people who have social interaction builds quality life through understanding each other and sharing.  I disagree with her opinion because online communication cannot create trust and credibility. However, face-to-face communication creates a meaningful l connection, trust and loyalty.  I believe that internet does not have a positive impact on friendship but rather it is a platform which disconnects people. Even if people spend hours chatting, people are isolated and they do have an opportunity to interact and experience the real world (WORTHAM, 397).

In the article by Gladwell, social media has hindered social development and social changes. In other words, Social media is not an effective tool for communication when it comes to creating social changes. In the past decades, Civil Right movement succeeded because people were committed and dedicated to bring changes (Gladwell, 399). They could not rely on social media but rather they were united by personal ties and they had effective leadership, personal obligation and visions. He says that social media brings weak-ties which hinder social changes. Generally, in order to bring social changes, people need strong ties through personal contacts, face-to-face interaction and activism (Gladwell, 399).

I agree with Gladwell that in bringing social changes, personal relationship, endurance, commitment and social interaction are key elements. However, social media platform is unable to form strong ties which create committed followers. Social media develops networking and consensus but lacks authority and hierarchy. Revolution is a process which needs a group people coming together with common goals. In other words, social changes need strong connections where people will share information and assign duties. Note that social media is not bad because people connected online will share information and receive updates on revolution (Gladwell, 399). However, social media platform should not be the starting point. The important thing is that a hierarchy level is needed for the purpose of making decision, implementing procedures and setting goals.  Note that social media does not have accountability or authority and this makes it difficult to make agreements and to set obligation in achieving goals. Generally, I agree with the author’s point that social change needs strong ties which are created by a centralized leadership and actions (Gladwell, 399).

Subject Line: Similarities and Differences between Emails Used At Home and At the Workplace

Generally, emails are accounted to necessitate fewer formalities when equated to letters. However, emails are similar and yet different when utilized for personal and Corporate purposes. Personal emails that are utilized at home are mainly objected at communicating with family or even family while at work emails are utilized for formal communication regarding business. The capability of both uses differs in regard to tone, etiquette, formality, and security.

Similarities

Personal and workplace emails are both utilized for communication as a form of messaging. Both of them are mainly intended at informing in regard to certain issues but the personal ones are informal. There are no length limitations for both given that the content is supposed to be thorough but brief in communicating the intended messages. For example they are all intended to deliver a specified message.

Differences

Personal emails normally utilize casual tone from the individual’s perspectives without the involvement of formalities. However, those utilized at the workplace are more formal because of the incorporated authority which calls for respect. Workplace and personal emails hold distinct levels of etiquette. Despite the fact that one can utilize shortened messages personally to friends the same can never be applied when utilizing corporate emails. In that workplace, emails necessitate careful assessment for any grammar or spelling mistakes and should utilize good formalities. In addition, abbreviations are never to be utilized while personal emails are not limited to any kind of wording given that the messaging is informal. For example one can send funny images using personal emails but for the working emails this is in appropriate. Corporate emails, unlike personal emails, are characterized by security features which seek to safeguard operations. Corporate emails are monitored regularly while the personal ones are not characterized by any form of scrutiny.

In summing up, to ensure that I develop emails wisely in my future profession, formality, etiquette and appropriate tone will be a priority. In addition grammatical and spelling mistakes will always be examined to avoid misinterpretations. Thank you.

Sincerely,

XXX.

IMRAD report

Introduction

In a job market that is becoming more competitive, many graduates experiencing difficulties in writing a cover letter and tailoring it to particular position in way that they can be distinguished from the rest. This is especially true if their university education focused more on technical aspect while giving students insufficient instruction on how they should present themselves to employers through professional format in a cover letter. A good personal presentation on cover letter goes a long way in persuading the potential employer that one is a good match for the available position in their organization (Gallo, 2014). This makes a student ready to take on any position arising from the workplace and be perceived by the employer as the best for such vacancies. Therefore , this report analysis how I will compose a cover letter that will deliver information about my qualification , while at the same time compel the audience to have confidence in my aptitude for the position

Searching through online professional media like LinkedIn, I managed to find out the various responsibilities and duties of a real estate sale of agents. The information provided showed the benefits of being in such position especially on networking and growth in this field.  I was able to find the kind of people I will have to work with, communication and language and the general environment.

The conventions that the cover letter will embrace involve paying attention to grammar, spelling and punctuation. In addition, the cover letter will involve a broad outline of why I am interested in the position, what makes me suitable for the position and the various aspects that I find quite interesting in being a real estate agent. This will also include an outline of the efforts that I have been employing in pursuing the interest in subject position, how my education background has provided the right support for this position. Spell check is quite important so as to avoid the rejection of the application due to many errors. Using spell check and asking others to proofread my cover letter and double checking when there doubt on the check. First impression counts since it demonstrates attention and due care which makes one to have a better chance of getting the interview (University of Washington, 2016). To achieve the other aspects, I intended to sell myself using examples and evidence that can match the job requirements. Recruiters are normally eager to know how one is different from others through skills, knowledge and experience which can be provided through well written outline.  Through quantifying my major academic achievements and past experience in related fields, I will be able to present myself as an outstanding candidate for the position. By focusing on these conventions while writing the cover letter, I will make the right moves in the writing and presentation of the right information.

To address the concern and the needs of the audience who are the hiring time, the cover letter will focus on what I will offer to the hiring organization. The cover letter will provide an outline on how much I know about the company, and how my efforts will contribute to the set mission and organization’s philosophy. Therefore, the cover letter will address on how my skills and knowledge will help in international and local clients with sale and rental transactions, and how in helping them to determining the property value for those willing to sell their properties. Also included will be the negotiation skills on pricing and facilitation of the closing process on customer’s and organization’s behalf. By highlighting what can be offered to the company the letter will give the hiring team a good opportunity for assessing the dedication to the  real estate agent position and how much can be accomplished on behalf of the company. Having completed my internship and worked in other smaller positions, I will emphasize on the experience I have gained in the sales sections for previous employers and how this will help me in carrying the outlined roles and responsibilities for the vacant position. By establishing my credentials, the cover letter will capture the attention of the audience since they are mostly interested in a person who will serve the needs and requirements of the available position.

The aim of the cover letter is to establish my credibility for the position through credentials and a professional communication. This means that a professional tone is better than a colloquial tone for this genre so as to offer the best perception. It will also involve suing an academic and structured format and not using any casual language, such that the use of clichés and abbreviations will not be employed.

Discussion

While writing a cover letter, one needs to think about their audience, who will read it, and how to capture their attention in such a way that they move them from one group to the next. Showing communication skills and personality will help one in making the case that other  people who have applied for the same position do not have what they can provide (Victor, 2016). This means that the cover letter has to focus on the hiring organization and not repeating the information that has been outline in the on description.
