If he is why is he allowed to live at the end of the play and even to be respected by the chorus?

Fate controls our providence and no one can revolutionize it as it is well displayed in the play, Oedipus the King. King Laius and his wife Jocasta knew very well the fate of their child since he was three years old but unknowingly, they did an action that could promote the fulfilling of the prophecy. They gave Oedipus to the shepherd to take him away but the shepherd gave him to a friend as a gift. Writers who offer English homework help at Edudorm essay writing service notes that when Oedipus grew up, he went to consult Teiresias and he was told the same prophesy that his parents were told by the oracle that he would kill his father and later marry his own mother. In the play, Oedipus the King, he decided to move away from his adoptive parents in the fear of fulfilling the prophecy although he had heard a hint about those parents that they were not his real parents but he did not take it seriously. He knew this were his parents since he had no doubts to that as he grew up in their arms since he was a little boy.

The Fate of King Oedipus in the Play, Oedipus the King

Although Oedipus and his parents were aware of his destiny and had the chance to run from it, they didn’t succeed since the more they tried to run from this prophecy, the more they promoted its’ fulfillment. This was proven that the destiny of king Oedipus was a plan from the gods and no one could have changed it not even himself. From the view of the play, Oedipus the King, it can be concluded that king Oedipus deserved his fate because of his action of which the gods foresaw and decided to punish him through planning his destiny. His arrogance promoted to the achievement of his fate. In the play, Oedipus the King, he killed king Laius and his servants after he insulted him without his consent that he was his blood father. He was just a victim of his fate through his own actions (Sophocles & Harry Love, 112). Oedipus was innocent since he did not know what the oracle had prophesied because his parents gave up on him at a very tender age. His parents gave birth to him regardless of the oracles prophesy therefore insinuating that had they listened to the oracle, none of the fate would have happened.

Oedipus did everything blindly since he even thought that king Polybus and queen Merope were his real parents. After contacting the oracle, he left after learning about that prophesy since he did not want to cause death to king Polybus whom he thought was his real father (Sophocles & Harry Love, 116). He proceeded on to Thebes where he killed a man he fought with at the crossroads without realizing he killed his own father. He thought he had killed just a stranger. Experts who offer English coursework help at Edudorm essay writing service indicates that this shows that Oedipus was just a victim of the circumstances thus was not guilty since he could not prevent that prophesy from being fulfilled. In the play, Oedipus the King, he passed the test which was answering a riddle which made him get the honor of marrying the widowed queen. He therefore married his own mother without his knowledge since he had fled home so that he would not fulfill that said prophesy. By doing this, he fulfilled that prophesy which he was avoiding without even realizing it. He had been a victim of the whole circumstances and cannot be considered guilty since he was not aware of the events that surrounded him.

On the other side of the view, it was not fair for Oedipus to go through his fate in reference to the efforts made by him and his parents to escape to prophecy because after he realized that he was the one who killed his own father and that he was behind the problem that Thebes was facing, he repented. His arrogance was the only thing which made him deserve all he went through. If we consider it as a punishment from the gods, his actions were not that vital to cost him and to cause the plagues in Thebes. In the play, Oedipus the King, he was taking the appropriate actions to make sure that he did not fulfill the prophecy but since it was the plan from gods, he became unsuccessful (Sophocles & Harry Love, 128). The action taken by his parents and the shepherd greatly promoted to the fulfilling of the prophecy. It would have been better if he stayed with his blood parents but the misunderstanding of his parents promoted his fate. Regardless of the fate of King Oedipus, there was a positive effect from gods that Thebes will always be blessed and the side of King Oedipus will never loose in any battle. The punishment also went ahead to the sons of King Oedipus which claimed that his sons would kill each other in the war. But this was fair because he had gotten those children with his own mother. Therefore, Oedipus life proves that no matter how aware one is about his or her life, no one can change his or her fortune.

Oedipus is not considered to be guilty of the happenings that took place during his era. In this play, in the play, Oedipus the King, Oedipus is referred to as a captain of a ship. This is metaphorical in that he is compared to be a captain since he leads the people and is the king long after the other king is murdered. Tutors who offer English dissertation help at Edudorm essay writing service acknowledges that he is told by the Chorus that they will stand by him since they suggest that from him the founded ship was set. This means that they respect him since they refer to Oedipus regime as a founded ship. Later Oedipus is referred by Jocasta as a captain where Jocasta prays to Apollo that “we are gone to pieces at the sight/ of him the steersman of the ship/ astray by fright” (Sophocles, 4). In the play, Oedipus the King, it is clear that Oedipus as a captain of a ship has a symbolic meaning and is a metaphor.

Oedipus is also seen to captain a ship twice. The ship is a metaphor for Thebes where Oedipus is ruling where he is respected by his pope and is considered a good leader. Oedipus is seen as a steersman where the Thebes look upon him so that they can be steered through by Oedipus through the storm (Sophocles & Harry Love, 112). In the play, Oedipus the King, the storm here is symbolic and is used to mean that Oedipus should lead people so as to overcome the hardships they are facing especially pollution, incest and civil strife. Though the people have wronged Oedipus he still remains the captain of the Thebes. It is stated that “a captain goes down with his ship” (Sophocles, 4). This means that the leadership of a leader depends on that particular leader and not on the people been leading addition, it is appropriate to say that a ship goes down with its captain meaning that the leader guides the people and can lead to the downfall of the people if not careful.

Oedipus would not prevent the events that happened in his life and in other people’s lives from happening. He was not guilty of any of the crimes that happened since incest happened but unknowingly. He married his mother and killed his father which are crimes against humanity but which he would not avoid since they were part of a said prophesy which the oracle had told his parents. In the play, Oedipus the King, he even does everything in his power to prevent the said prophesy from getting fulfilled but he is not higher than the gods. The gods ensure that prophesy gets fulfilled and that he eventually kills his father and marries his mother and the marriage result to four children (Sophocles & Harry Love, 154). Authors who offer English assignment help at Edudorm essay writing service points that the children are born out of incest which Oedipus is not aware of since he is just a victim of that said prophesy. Therefore, he needs not to be punished since he is not aware of the events taking place in his life because he believes in his adoptive parents instead of real parents. In the play, Oedipus the King, he did not know he had other parents even though he had heard rumors which he had ignored. The fact that he is not guilty from the events ensures he earns respect from the people who support his leadership since he is a good leader and a good captain to his people.

Oedipus shows that people learn through suffering since he suffers for the mistakes, he is not aware of. He learns through the hard way since he fulfills a said prophesy, he does not even know whether it exists. In the play, Oedipus the King, he commits murder which is a crime but he repents since he is not supposed to take the life of other people. This murder would not have been prevented since the oracle had prophesied that the son of the king would eventually kill him. Oedipus is guilty of fulfilling that said prophesy because the gods knew that would happen (Sophocles & Harry Love, 164). In the play, Oedipus the King, he suffers mistakes he is not supposed to suffer and later dies in a manner he is not supposed to die since he is exiled after making himself blind. He suffers the punishment he is not supposed to suffer since he is a victim of what the oracle prophesied since it had to be fulfilled by him.

Conclusion

It is important to note that odious is a good king since he suffers mistakes, he does not know the root. He suffers because of what the oracle prophesied and which he fulfills by killing his father and then marrying his mother. All these events happened unknowingly since he was not aware of that said prophesy. All the sufferings happening in Thebes are as a result of what the oracle prophesied and thus cannot be prevented. In the play, Oedipus the King, he therefore suffers the mistakes he is not aware of and he is later exiled because of killing the king, his father. Oedipus is an example of a victim of circumstances where one suffers because of the mistakes of other people.

Works Cited

Sophocles, , and Harry Love. Oedipus the King.
