MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM

  • MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM
  1. Explain the difference between vertical and horizontal market software.
  • Vertical market software
  •             Vertical market software is aimed at addressing the needs of a particular organization and fulfilling its demand (Haag, Cummings & Phillips, 2007). The software in a vertical market can be contrasted with market software which is known as horizon. The vertical software can be used to address a group of organizations that deal with similar products. The vertical software is a developer of business tools that can be used in addressing the organizations needs. The software assists in identifying general or either specifics types of goods according to the operations of an organization. The software assists in removing the third party which would create problems to the organization. An example of the vertical market software is the software known as point-of-sale (Haag, et al., 2007).
  •             Vertical software aimed at addressing the needs of a particular business can be operating in the fields of hotel management (Haag, et al., 2007). In all of these organizations, vertical market software helps in addressing their needs particularly within a visible vertical market. In the vertical market, the software helps in achieving the target of meeting the demand of a particular organization. For example, the vertical market may be dealing with a piece of equipment that is used only semiconductor manufactures (Haag, et al., 2007).
  • Horizontal market software
  •             This is the opposite of the vertical software. The horizontal market software can be used by different kinds of organizations (Haag, et al., 2007). The software assists in supplying goods to a number of organizations rather than only from just one industry. A good example of horizontal software includes the spread sheet program. These programs can be used by many types of organizations and a great number of consumers. The horizontal software is also known as the productivity software because many organizations can use the software at the same time (Haag, et al., 2007).
  • 2. Explain the difference between application software and system software.
  • Application software
  •             Application software is computer software that deals with document in order help the user in performing various specific tasks (Haag, et al., 2007). Some of the examples of application software include the graphics software and the media players. Application software usually applies the ideas and some features of a certain computing platform when performing a certain purpose. There are many types of application software that are under two categories. The first one is the horizontal applications. The other category of application software is the vertical application. The horizontal application occupies the largest field in many organizations. The vertical applications are designed to cater for a particular organization (Haag, et al., 2007).
  • System software
  •             The system software is simply the program that certainly makes up the operating system of a computer (Haag, et al., 2007). The system software are designed in manner that they are not meant to be controlled by the end user. System software is also known as the low-level. The system software is usually installed in a computer when the operating system is installed. The main function of the system software is that it generates the user interface. This condition gives the acceptation of the operating system to interact with the hardware (Haag, et al., 2007). These programs can be used by many types of organizations and a great number of consumers. The horizontal software is also known as the productivity software because many organizations can use the software even at the same time (Haag, et al., 2007).
