what a 'perfect' United States might look like in the future

Questions and Topics We Can Help You To Answer:
Paper Instructions:

You recently read Edward Bellamy’s Looking Backward -- his fictional view of what a “perfect”
United States might look like in the future.
You will now read the three articles in this package of real things that countries have tried. The
first article discusses Italy, the second the United States, and the Third, Finland.
Assignment Instructions
You will write a 3-4 page paper. I want you to compare the European approaches to fostering a
“good” society for their workers to the American one. How do they differ? What does the U.S.
provide that the other countries don’t? What does Europe provide that the U.S. doesn’t?
Ultimately try to answer why these countries have different approaches? Why didn’t the U.S. go
the way that Europe did?
Your paper should address all of these questions fluidly. Don’t just write a series of answers to
the individual questions. Try to weave them all into your narrative.
Format
Your paper will be 3-4 pages double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12pt font, 1 inch margins.
Your paper will contain a header with only your name. (See the example above.) You can print
one double-sided page [front & back] or two single-sided pages.
The purpose of this assignment is to help you to write an analytical paper clearly and concisely.
This is an analytical paper, not a research paper. This means that you will answer the question
based only on the evidence from the readings. Do not use outside sources, do not simply repeat
what you learned in the lectures. The key to a good paper is to make an argument by staking a
position in your introduction, then use evidence in the form of quotes from the document to help
reinforce your point. “Quotations should be cited with parentheses with the author’s last name
and page number.” (Loomis, p.123)
