What does language mean to you?

Topic and Questions We Can Help You To Answer
Paper Instructions:

In this essay, you will write a personal narrative discussing the way your languages have shaped who you are and the course your life has taken. Your essay can be structured as a story where you reflect about your past, but also the direction in which your life is going. To begin your writing process, think about the following questions:

What does language mean to you?
What language(s) and language varieties do you speak?
How did you learn your languages? Please be as specific as possible, especially in describing the role your family, school, and your community have played in your learning process.
What are some of the challenges related to language that you have faced in your life? For example, what did you experience as you transitioned from your home to your school environment? What did you experience when you went to another country or dealt with a situation where expectations around language were different?  Did you ever face “linguicism,” or discrimination based on language?
What role do your languages play in your life? Which language do you use with whom? Which language do you use in different situations? Why?
How do your languages shape who you are and the way people see you? How do you feel about them?
Your essay should be between 500 and 750 words, typed using Times New Roman font size 12. It should be organized using unified paragraphs and it should be carefully proofread.  It must be submitted through blackboard.
