Questions and Topics We Can Help You To Answer:

Choose one of the five longer readings listed below. In your essay, address what you as a scholar find to be the key flaws and strengths of the arguments made by the author(s). Be sure to review all of the longer readings and explain WHY you chose the one that's the focus of your essay. Be careful not to make your choice based on the number of pages in a reading. Some are shorter but dense, some are longer and include photographs.

This can be presented in your essay as a simple statement of the "Author's name or authors' names...." main argument is..................................... and uses ..............................as support for this perspective. There are flaws and strengths in both in the framework and conclusion stemming from (author's name or authors' names) argument. After reviewing the other readings for this assignment, I found this one to be the most compelling because I'm interested in ------------- as it relates to women in peace making."

From this brief introduction, you would then delve into the flaws and strengths, using citations from this, and other content from the course, to make a cogent and scholarly analysis. The final draft of your essay should have six citations from the reading you're assessing, and at least 5 citations from other content we've had in this course.

Here are the options. Choose ONE

http://collections.unu.edu/eserv/UNU:2508/ebrary9789280812015.pdf  This is a 400+ page book. The chapter for this assignment is one pages 48-73, "Frameworks for understanding women as victims and peacebuilders" by Lisa Schirch. A key focus for this essay is how gender informs peacebuilding.

http://postconflict.unep.ch/publications/UNEP_UN-Women_PBSO_UNDP_gender_NRM_peacebuilding_report.pdf  Pages 5-52 are the actual report. Don't make the mistake of only reading the executive summary! A key focus for this essay is the role of gendering in the case studies presented in the report.

https://giwps.georgetown.edu/sites/giwps/files/Women%20and%20Climate%20Change.pdf  pages 7-60 are the actual report. Again, read all of it! A key focus for this essay is the intersectionality of gender, climate change, security, human rights, economic development. Why is understanding this intersection so vital for sustainability?

The International Rescue Committee is a non governmental organization, whose work primarily focuses on the self-determined needs of non combatants in conflict zones. In this report, they focus on women and girls in Syria, and ask the profound question of whether or not the larger global community is truly listening to what Syrian women and girls describe as their dreams and needs. Read pages 1-20 for this assignment.

Violence on the Land, Violence on Our Bodies is a statement/study regarding the harm of extractive energy industries on Indigenous peoples, especially women and gender non-conforming people. It suggests that a broader framework of analysis, indigenous and feminist, regarding deeper understanding of the intersectionality of this issue, is best developed through inclusive community organizing efforts. On page 6, the authors write,

This framework is an alternative to mainstream responses that often see the bodily impacts of environmental destruction as being solved by increased policing or criminalization ,rather than

community-based solutions developed by those most often impacted.

This framework seeks to move beyond a carceral approach to the violence resulting from

environmental destruction. It calls on us to meet communities with humility, respect, and a commitment to deep listening. We understand that each community is unique and may have different

needs and struggles. We also recognize that gender-based violence (including environmental violence) disproportionately affects Indigenous women, youth and people who are part of the Two Spirit,

LGBTTIQQA community, and those who are gender non-conforming and non-binary.

A key focus for your analysis of this statement/study is what an inclusive community based approach really offers, so as to not devolve into a well-meaning, but tokenized effort.  Peace and justice aren't realized when this happens, because privilege isn't addressed, and power doesn't shift. What do the authors offers as a praxis for creating substantive change for a peace that's meaningful and sustainable? As part of your analysis, review and comment on one of the activities listed in the toolkit that's part of this statement/study.
