Johnny and Grace

  • Johnny and Grace
  •             In a small village along the Dutch river, there lived a farmer with his wife and two children named Johnny and Grace. The farmer’s first wife who was the mother of Johnny and Grace died after a short illness when her children were young and in need of her support. The second wife ill-treated these two children and she was often nagging the farmer. There were great famines that stroke the village and the farmer had a difficult time in providing daily bread for his family. The farmer’s wife decided to move the two children away from their home when the situation became worse. The wife always convinced the farmer that they should abandon the children very far away from their home.
  •             The farmer had great love for his children but the wife overpowered him and he followed her opinion of abandoning the children. The children were locked in the house for three days by their step mother before they could be taken in a forest far away from the village. The children were being locked up so that by the time they were to be taken away from home, they will have no energy left to find a way back. After three days were over, the woman woke early in the morning together with the farmer so that they can accomplish the mission of abandoning the two children.
  •             Johnny, who was older than grace with one year, secretly put wood ash in his pockets in order to mark the way that their parents were to use. The children were later abandoned in the middle of a thick forest but Johnny’s plan of marking the way had already worked. Both parents left the forest before darkness and the two children had a chance of eating wild fruits. The forest was covered with darkness within no time and the children got more worried. Johnny consoled his sister Grace and he decided that they spend the night sleeping inside a cave. The two children luckily spent the night inside the cave without being hurt by wild animals.
  •             The next morning after spending the whole night in the cave, Johnny decided that they should try to trace the wood ash mark he had already made the previous day. They managed to trace the mark that Johnny had made and started their way back home. After walking for three hours, the children decided to rest and drink water from a nearby stream. The cloud opened while they were still resting and rainfall was poured continues. The rainfall run for about two continues hours without stopping because it had taken a long period without raining in the whole area. When the rain stopped, the two children continued with their journey back home. Unfortunately they could no longer trace the wood ash markings that Johnny had put. Although the two children could no longer trace the wood ash marks, they decided to continue the journey with the little memory they had. Both children kept going but unfortunately they failed to get out of the forest.
  •             When it was raining in the village, lightening stroke and the children’s step mother died. The farmer had always loved his children and he decided to go and look them in the forest now that the wife was no more living. The children found shinning stones inside a cave that they spent the night in the second day. They decided to find some wild fruits near that cave while they were examining the shinning stones. The farmer successfully found his two children and explained how his wife died after lightening stroke. The children were very happy to re-unite with their father and they showed him the precious stones they had seen in the cave. The farmer discovered that the stones were gold and they carried with them as many as they could. After selling the shinning stones they lived happily together.
